Welcome: Generals of WWII
Description: This webquest covers some of the most important generals of WWII and what they were
known for. This also allows for the students to learn a few facts about several people they already know,
but do not know some of their backstory.
Garde Level: 9-12
Curriculum: Social Studies
Keywords: Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, George S. Patton, Georgy Zhukov, Erwin Rommel,
Isoroku Yamamoto
Author: Jonathan Woods

Introduction:
Several of the men on this list helped to change the outcome of World War II for the better, and some
for the worst. Their accomplishments span from one side of the world to the other. Some of their
attacks were even used as distractions in order to confuse the enemy. On the Allied side, victory may
not have come had it not been for their contributions. On the Axis side, their contributions changed not
only the war but warfare itself. In this lesson we will learn what contributions they made, why they are
significant, and how things could have been different had it not been for them.

Task:
Students should be able to explain the contributions that were made by these men.
Students will be asked to create a short headliner about these men and their accomplishments.
Students will write a short opinionated, yet factual, paper that explains what could have happened if not
for these men.

Process:
Students will list each accomplishment that they find for these men and where the accomplishment
occurred. Once this is finished, they will outline a newspaper article for each of these men explaining
what they did for their country and the war (no less than 150 words). Then explain how things could
have turned out if these accomplishments were nonexistent (no less than 200 words).
Information for these men can be found at the following location:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commanders_of_World_War_II

Evaluation:
Students will be graded on a scale of 1-15 (points possible) for each of the news articles that they will
write. Then on their paper involving possible outcomes they will face a scale of 1-10. In all there will be a
total of 100 points for this assignment. Students will be graded on their ability to present the factual
information as well show that they can see why the events by these men were significant. This will be
shown through the knowledge they exhibit for other possible outcomes during the war.

Conclusion:
The point of this assignment is for students to learn about some of the most important battles,
strategies, and the men that lead these charges. It will also help students understand how and what
helped shape World War II. This understanding will help when looking at some of the other battles of
WWII by seeing the more intricate details and the leadership that was involved.
