History is not something that happens outside of Douglas. South Georgia also experienced the Civil War, the1920s, the Great Depression, and so on. Often, what happened in Douglas is similar to events elsewhere and a lot of that history still makes up the places we know and love today. This semester, you will research an event in local history and explain how this event connects within the larger context of US history.

Purpose: The purpose of this project is for you to learn how to do primary and (scholarly) secondary research to demonstrate how local events are a part of larger historical patterns.
Skills: In completing this project, you will learn how to analyze sources carefully, draw conclusions based upon facts you have researched, and build an argument based on your findings. In doing so, you will also learn the steps to write an effective college-level research paper.
Knowledge: This assignment will let you have a deeper understanding of the importance of historical context, and a greater appreciation for the historian’s task of placing events in historical context. Using the historic local newspapers available in Galileo is a great way to find a topic. You can do keyword searches or you can just flip through full pages until you find something. Not savvy with the computer? Fear not! The library has the local newspapers on microfilm—pick a decade that interests you and read through a few issues until you find something that interests you.
2. When you find an event that sounds interesting, read the story carefully and, noting the date, think about what was going on nationally when this event occurred.
3. Read the chapter in your textbook related to the local topic you are examining.
No, Douglas is not going to be mentioned in your textbook, but the textbook will give you the national context you need to understand what was going on in the US when your event happened. They are “Selling the self: women and the feminine seduction of advertising” of Kristine Blair and “Gender Issues in Advertising Language” of Nancy Artz. In addition, I also did another searching on other resources and found one more article that was “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies” of Shelly Grabe. Overall, there was nothing resource that I thought it was the least helpful this week. However, I thought the Gale Literary Sources of Cypress Library was most helpful for me because it provided me two articles. During finding sources, I used keywords, such as “women”, “media effects”, and “advertising”, and I refined my keywords as I went along. Moreover, I also found more keywords, such as “meta-analysis” and “body image”. As we progress through the lifespan, none of us is absolutely certain as to what course our life might take. This assignment is designed to simulate challenges you may face in your own future life and to better prepare you for overcoming potential obstacles. Additionally, it will allow us, as a group, to provide information that others in the community may access when searching for help on their topic.
In the assignment, Your Lot in Life, each of you will be randomly assigned a unique life experience that may occur during childhood. Your assignment is to gather information about your topic (or "lot" in life) from both scholarly and community sources as well as the internet. You will compile this information into a report that will be put together with reports from other students to create the guide. The goals of the assignment are:
1. To give you an opportunity to become familiar with research that has been conducted on your life issue.
2. To give you practical experience in locating likely sources of information and support from the community.

Often, what happened in Douglas is similar to events elsewhere and a lot of that history still makes up the places we know and love today. This semester, you will research an event in local history and explain how this event connects within the larger context of US history.

Purpose: The purpose of this project is for you to learn how to do primary and (scholarly) secondary research to demonstrate how local events are a part of larger historical patterns.
Skills: In completing this project, you will learn how to analyze sources carefully, draw conclusions based upon facts you have researched, and build an argument based on your findings. In doing so, you will also learn the steps to write an effective college-level research paper.
Knowledge: This assignment will let you have a deeper understanding of the importance of historical context, and a greater appreciation for the historian’s task of placing events in historical context. Using the historic local newspapers available in Galileo is a great way to find a topic. You can do keyword searches or you can just flip through full pages until you find something. Not savvy with the computer? Fear not! The library has the local newspapers on microfilm—pick a decade that interests you and read through a few issues until you find something that interests you.
2. When you find an event that sounds interesting, read the story carefully and, noting the date, think about what was going on nationally when this event occurred.
3. Read the chapter in your textbook related to the local topic you are examining.
No, Douglas is not going to be mentioned in your textbook, but the textbook will give you the national context you need to understand what was going on in the US when your event happened. Example: perhaps your topic is about a soldier coming home to Douglas from Vietnam. Reading the chapter on the Vietnam War would be a good idea. In this assignment, you should practice writing using the writing process and developing a well-constructed analysis essay in formal register. The essay should show how an analysis of the visual components of an image leads to a better understanding of the image.
Process for Completion
The first step in this process will be to choose an image. Browse the images available through the Gordon Parks Foundation Archives. The link is available near the end of Unit 3. Choose an image that you find engaging and that you feel offers ample opportunity for analysis. Some images are interesting, but they’re difficult to talk about. The image you choose will be the subject of your essay.
After you have chosen your image, you should engage in some prewriting activities using the ideas and terms presented in Unit 4. First, take stock of your initial reactions to the image. What emotions did you feel as you first looked at the photograph? What aspects about the image lead viewers to react a certain way?
Before you begin writing, you will want to perform some research. This assignment requires at least one source (print or web). My topic is “women in mass media” and my research question is “Why women are affected by the media the most?” I tried to search articles that were related to my research question through Cypress Library, Gale Literary Sources, and I found two articles from this source. They are “Selling the self: women and the feminine seduction of advertising” of Kristine Blair and “Gender Issues in Advertising Language” of Nancy Artz. In addition, I also did another searching on other resources and found one more article that was “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies” of Shelly Grabe. Overall, there was nothing resource that I thought it was the least helpful this week. However, I thought the Gale Literary Sources of Cypress Library was most helpful for me because it provided me two articles. During finding sources, I used keywords, such as “women”, “media effects”, and “advertising”, and I refined my keywords as I went along. Moreover, I also found more keywords, such as “meta-analysis” and “body image”. The database provided the most material for my topic was the result of the experiment in the article “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies”. I did not find sources from credible Internet sources. According to these article, I was able to find specific statistics to add to my essay. Papers should be 5-7 double-spaced pages, no longer than 8 pages.
Papers must be typed and have 1 inch left-side margins. Do not abuse font and page margin

Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
