This document discusses hypermedia APIs and whether they are just hype. It begins with introductions of the speakers and their companies. It then explores what defines a hypermedia API, different levels of maturity for hypermedia APIs, and examples of APIs that exhibit various levels of hypermedia. The document suggests that while hypermedia APIs have advantages in being human-friendly and enabling discoverability, they have not been widely adopted due to lack of standardization and clients not being able to fully leverage the hypermedia. It highlights some companies' work in developing hypermedia servers and interaction frameworks to further hypermedia APIs.

This document discusses the journey of a software architect and their company from monolithic architecture to microservices. It began with moving 4 platforms to use microservices two years ago with goals of smaller deployments and lower risk. They now have 80 deployable projects using microservices with 2-5 services each. Microservices are described as small, independent units that implement domain features and can be understood by a single developer. The document contrasts monoliths, which are large, complex codebases for an entire business, with microservices and discusses how the company transitioned from monoliths to using microservices architecture.
Supporting Apache Brands While Making A Profit - ApacheCon 2014Shane Curcuru
Does your company want to capitalize on the Apache brand? Are you interested in seeing how closely you can tie your marketing into the latest Apache projects? Do you recognize the importance of supporting the Apache ecosystem, not just with code contributions but other actions?
As VP of Brand Management for all Apache projects, I can help show business and technical leaders some of the ways they can respectfully and successfully market and position their own services in relation to Apache project brands. The key message is: Apache project governance is independent; but we are happy to have businesses build their software and services on any Apache software products.

At INN's day at IRE 2012, Jon Sawyer of the Pulitzer Center discussed the success his organization has had by creating videos about the organization's investigative projects.
This study examined the effects of upright spoon presentations versus flipped spoon presentations on expulsion and mouth cleaning in 3 children diagnosed with pediatric feeding disorders and oral motor deficits. Treatment involved nonremoval of the spoon to address inappropriate mealtime behaviors. For all participants, flipped spoon presentations led to lower expulsion and higher rates of mouth cleaning compared to upright spoons. Over time, all participants were able to transition back to an upright spoon, though the time required differed for each child.

The document summarizes a quantitative review of treatment outcomes for pediatric feeding disorders. 48 single-case research studies involving behavioral interventions for 96 participants were included. Most children had complex medical and developmental issues and were treated at multidisciplinary feeding programs. Results indicated behavioral interventions were associated with significant improvements in feeding behavior. Common effective treatments included differential reinforcement and escape extinction procedures. However, more research is needed to document outcomes beyond behavioral changes and to identify key behavioral factors influencing mealtime performance.

The United States has deported more than 250 Haitians since January, with around half being jailed in unsanitary facilities in Haiti without charge, posing health risks. An investigation found the Obama administration has not followed its own policy to seek alternatives to deportation when there are medical or humanitarian issues. These detentions of deportees in Haiti for up to 11 days violate Haitian law and UN treaties, as Haitian constitution bans detention over 48 hours without a court appearance, and UN treaties prohibit arbitrary detention.
Rising crimes in our city Mumbai is an Indian city that is ostensibly termed the economic capital of India and it is projected that a very high percentage of the total volume of business carried out in the whole country is transacted here. Mumbai is therefore a frontline city of India and is often the dream destination of many an Indian who aspires to make it big in India. While Mumbai’s population continues to grow at a rapid rate, so too has the rate of crime as it relates to “crimes against women.” Local media and police have reported an increase in crimes of sexual assaults within the Indian community against women. However, police attribute this perceived increase to victims feeling more willing to report such crimes to authorities.
The document discusses designing an infographic to raise awareness about increasing phone scam crime rates in Singapore. It considers targeting adults to alert them and help protect elderly family members. Research found key concerns in 2011 were kidnapping phone scams and lottery phone scams, with details provided on how these scams operate. The document also covers researching infographic design principles to ensure the visual representation of information is effective.
The Bosnian War from 1992-1995 was caused by deep-seated ethnic tensions and nationalism that increased over centuries as the populations of Bosnia and Herzegovina identified themselves more strongly as Bosniaks, Serbs, or Croats. Centuries of resistance to foreign rule and the oppression of some groups by others led to mistrust between ethnicities. The end of communism in Yugoslavia allowed these ethnic identities to flourish, but also unleashed ethnic hatred. Fighting broke out over territorial disputes, and accusations of ethnic cleansing and genocide occurred before NATO intervened and a peace agreement was signed. Over 100,000 people were killed in the war and 1.8 million displaced.

This document discusses introducing new media technologies to a company's intranet. It suggests starting with wikis and blogs to allow for more flexible content management and user collaboration. These can be set up inexpensively using open source software. Wikis and blogs would provide benefits like centralized information sharing and a faster way to publish news. While there are weaknesses like separate user management for each tool, implementing these gradually could help test new approaches before a full intranet overhaul. The overall goal is to make content and collaboration more dynamic while gaining experience with social media technologies.

Open World Forum - The Agile and Open Source WayAlexis Monville
Slides from Open World Forum 2013 (#OWF13)
The Agile and Open Source Way is the book for everyone who wants to scale agile in multiple distributed teams. This book will also help you to collaborate upstream with Open Source projects.

The document provides an overview of open source projects, discussing what open source is, how open source communities work, and tips for contributing to open source projects, including identifying relevant skills, finding a project to contribute to, and understanding how to engage with an open source community. It uses examples like Wikipedia, Linux, and OpenStack to illustrate open source trends and best practices for participation. The presentation aims to educate people on open source and lower barriers to contributing for the first time.
The Internet Society works to promote an open and globally connected Internet through technology development, policy engagement, and operational best practices. It founded the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and runs programs like Deploy360 and Best Current Operational Practices (BCOP) to help operators deploy new technologies and standards. A recent survey found that while many operators are interested in IETF standards work, they face challenges like lack of time and travel budgets in directly engaging with or influencing the IETF process. The Internet Society aims to address these issues and facilitate more communication between operators and the IETF.
This document discusses how an open source company can generate revenue. It provides examples from Joget Workflow and Jaspersoft to illustrate how open source projects can experience viral growth through downloads and adoption, leading to paid support contracts, consulting, and other services that produce recurring revenue streams. While open source companies face challenges in areas like funding, marketing, and customer acquisition, the document argues that the open source business model is viable given examples of successful companies like Red Hat and MySQL that have educated the market.
Presentations from our osAccelerate event in London UK by Mark Brincat, CTO of The Economist and Steve Tanner, Systems Analyst at the World Trade Organisation.
This document discusses online communities and how they are created using content management systems. It defines an online community as a virtual community that exists online allowing individuals to interact across geographical and political boundaries to pursue shared interests or goals. It notes that common types of online communities include social networks. It then discusses who participates in online communities and how content management systems like Drupal allow communities to be created by managing workflows for collaboratively creating, editing, and publishing digital content. Drupal is highlighted as an open source system used to power many sites, including the Australian Prime Minister's site. Examples of what can be done with Drupal include blogs, forums, news sites, and more.
Flink's Journey from Academia to the ASFFabian Hueske
Apache Flink is a project with a very active, supportive, and continuously growing community. Last year, Flink was among the top ten projects of the Apache Software Foundation with the most traffic on user and development mailing lists. Looking back, Flink started as a research prototype developed by three PhD students at TU Berlin in 2009. In 2014, the developers donated the code base to the ASF and joined the newly founded Apache Flink incubator project. Within three years, Flink grew into a healthy project and gained a lot of momentum.
In my presentation, I will discuss Flink's journey from an academic research project to one of the most active projects of the Apache Software Foundation. I will talk about the academic roots of the project, how the original developers got introduced to the ASF, Flink's incubation phase, and how its community evolved after it graduated and became an ASF top-level project. My talk will focus on the decisions, efforts, and circumstances that helped to grow a vital and welcoming open source community.

1. LargoA Responsive WordPress Framework
for News Websites

2. “We, representatives of nonprofit
news organizations, gather at a time
when investigative reporting, so
crucial to a functioning democracy, is
under threat. There is an urgent need
to nourish and sustain the emerging
investigative journalism ecosystem to
better serve the public.”
— The Pocantico Declaration, 2009
5. The Problem
• Many members have little or no
technology resources
• INN wants to help but we’re a relatively
small organization, too
• Not feasible to provide one-on-one help
to every member
• Most members have websites, but…
6.
7.
8. Our Solution: Largo
• WordPress-based
• Optimized for News Publishers
• Responsive design – Looks good on any device
• Easy to setup, customize and extend
• Curated list of plugins that work well together,
solve common publishing problems
• For INN members: hosted platform that they
don’t have to maintain
• For others: open source parent theme, plugins,
support docs (and soon) paid consulting
9. Benefits
• For Publishers
– Dramatically reduce cost of developing and launching a website
– Remove technical barriers to allow you to focus on content
• For Readers
– Clean, fast-loading, beautiful reading experience on any device
• For Developers
– A robust toolkit for building news websites
• For INN
– Framework allows us to build and launch sites quickly and
provide better support to our members
– Common backend enables new distribution and content
syndication possibilities
– When INN (or a member) builds a new feature we’re better able
to share with the entire network
10. Where We Are
(~1.5 years into the project)
• About 30 sites in our network using Largo
• Around 65 non-INN sites (that we know of) using the open source
version
• New version (0.4) shipping July/August
– More visual, less “newspaper” looking page layouts
– Implementing WP Theme Customizer API to make it easier to preview
layout/design changes
– A number of architecture, performance and security enhancements
• Simultaneously turning our focus to better documentation, training,
scalability
• Beginning to offer consulting to non-members as an additional
revenue stream
