Dr. Suella Hansen presented at the Pacific Wave Conference on ICT connectivity in the Pacific region. She discussed how improving access to information and communication technologies (ICT) can drive economic growth and reduce poverty by enabling new applications for business, education, health, and personal use. However, the availability of robust and affordable broadband remains limited in many Pacific islands, particularly in rural areas, and there is a growing gap between bandwidth demand and supply. Further investment is still needed in infrastructure like submarine cables and mobile networks, market liberalization to reduce prices through competition, developing workforce skills, and collecting data on ICT access and usage to guide strategies and investments.

The 15th annual World Communication Awards were presented on December 3, 2013 in London as part of the Total Telecom Festival. Around 500 senior telecommunications executives attended to see the 20 award winners revealed and participate in the day's conference. Key highlights included Olaf Swantee of EE being named CEO of the Year and Orange Business Services winning four awards, including Global Operator. The event was organized by Total Telecom and brought together senior professionals from over 40 operators.

Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability. Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies.
