Water is a precious resource that is vital for life. However, the world's population has doubled since 1950 while water usage has tripled, straining fresh water supplies. Additionally, pollution from chemicals, fertilizers, and plastics has exacerbated health issues related to water. A large swath of plastic waste now exists in the Pacific Ocean that is disrupting ecosystems and entering the food chain. Enagic's SD501 water ionizer is presented as an eco-friendly solution that produces ionized water to reduce chemical and plastic usage and has received an environmental award for its positive impact.

The Flint, Michigan water crisis demonstrates how human actions directly affected the water cycle - switching the city's water source to the Flint River contaminated the water with lead, poisoning thousands of children and requiring over $1 billion to address the extensive damage to infrastructure and public health. While intending to save money, the state of Michigan's actions inadvertently harmed the local population and environment through contaminated water.

Composting breaks down organic materials with oxygen and microorganisms, and the resulting compost can be used as fertilizer to replace chemicals in agriculture. One can compost by creating a pile with a garbage can or using a service to compost food scraps. Food waste in landfills produces the most methane as it decomposes, so composting helps the environment.

If something is potable that means it's safe to drink. In developed countries, tap water is usually potable. Potable water is for drinking and domestic use (cooking, bathing, watering the lawn, etc. We get potable water from springs, wells, streams, rivers, lakes etc. This water still must be treated to kill bacteria. It must also be tested to be sure that toxins from polluting sources have not made it unsafe to drink. The average person uses many gallons of water each day. After we have used it, the water may be dirty and no longer fit to drink. So what happens to that water?

According to a Wall Street Journal article “Water Is the New Oil.” This article states the following facts: 1. There is no more fresh water on Earth than there was a million years ago . . . but now 6 million people share it. 2. The population has doubled since 1950 but water usage has tripled. 3. Worldwide, water related diseases account for 80% of all sickness and claim 5 million lives annually. 4. Air pollution, oil spills, wastes and (chemical) fertilizers have exaggerated this health impact. 5. At least 70,000 chemicals are used regularly throughout the world. 6. At least 1,000 new chemicals are introduced every year. Another article entitled, “Plastic Ocean”, states that there is a swath in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas that is nothing but a plastic stew. This epidemic has resulted in plastics becoming a part of our food chain.
