The nitrogen cycle describes how nitrogen is exchanged between the atmosphere, soil, plants, and animals. Nitrogen makes up most of the air but plants and animals cannot use it in this form. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soil and oceans convert nitrogen into compounds plants can absorb through their roots. Animals get nitrogen by eating plants or other animals. Decomposers release nitrogen back into the soil or water where it can be used again by living things, with some nitrogen returning to the atmosphere.
