The Romans built an aqueduct to supply water from the Jadro River to the Diocletian Palace in Split, Croatia, which was founded in the 3rd century AD by the Roman emperor Diocletian. The aqueduct provided water for public baths, fountains, and later private bathrooms when homes were built, and the public baths took on a recreational role similar to modern swimming pools.
