A submersible is a small submarine that is transported to operation areas by surface vessels or larger submarines. One of the earliest submersibles was the bathysphere, a metal ball lowered by cable from ships that American scientists Beebe and Barton used to descend 900 meters off Bermuda in 1931. The bathyscaphe, a diving craft controlled underwater unlike the bathysphere, was developed by Swiss scientist August Piccard between 1946-1948 and descended to 4000 meters off Senegal in 1954. ROVs are remotely operated robot submersibles controlled from ships with video and computers to find objects like the Titanic, which was discovered by Argo-Jason in 1985.
