Similar to how you can upgrade your system’s preinstalled processor or graphics card and choose
whichever brand you want, you can also do the same with your memory and storage drive. Under U.S.
f ederal law, you can swap out your system’s OEM pre-installed components f or more cost-ef f ective
third-party components and still retain your product’s warranty, per section 102(c) of the Magnuson-
Moss Warranty Act of 1975 (15 United States Code section 2302(c)). In practical terms, this means
you can upgrade to Crucial memory or SSDs without voiding your system’s original warranty. Here’s
what the OEM warranties have to say.
"Adding third-party
items does not void
the IBM® machine
warranty"
"You can install
additional hardware or
sof tware on a Dell™
computer without
voiding the warranty"
"The warranty on your
HP® product will not
be af f ected by the
installation of a non-
HP upgrade"
"A
replacement part or product,
including a user-installable
part that has been installed
in accordance with
instructions provided by
Apple, assumes the
remaining warranty of the
Apple Product"
