War On Terror Ideology
Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, then President George W. Bush stated "[o]ur war on
terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of
global reach has been found, stopped and defeated" (Bush, 2001, p. NA). The nature of the war on
terror has changed dramatically since its inception in 2001. With al Qaeda decimated, its remaining
leaders, members and supporters have fractured into several splinter groups each with their own
aspirations. With varying ideologies, tactics, techniques and procedures, the strategy for dealing
with these groups must be as complex and comprehensive as the groups themselves. The War on
Terror is a war of ideology. A war of ideas between Western democracy and Salafi Islam. A war of
indefinite length, waged in complex social–political environments, against an adaptive and evolving
enemy. Wars of ideology are rarely, if ever, won. Rather, "they tend to drag on, unless an event
occurs that causes the belligerents to focus their attention elsewhere" (Echevarria, 2008, p. vi).
When they do draw to a close the opposing ideologies likely remain with the "winner" having done
little more than marginalize the opposing set of beliefs. For example, the Cold War is often cited as "

The War on Terror
On September 11, 2001, a man by the name of Osama Bin Laden changed the world using four
planes. Crashing one into the pentagon, two into the World Trade Center in New York City, and the
never forgotten fourth one that was brought down, by passengers, in a field in Pennsylvania.
Because of these four planes people can not do many things the same, for instance people can not
get on a plane without going through an hour or two of security. But Thirteen years after the biggest
terrorist attack the world had ever seen, the War on Terror remains a vital problem for the U.S
Military.
The War on terror has been a main focus for the U.S for many years now. The U.S. first got involved
in the war on September 11th, 2001, when two planes crashed in to the World Trade Center in New
York City, and one in to the Pentagon in Washington D.C., making it the worst thing that has
happened on U.S soil since Pearl Harbor. The one thing the U.S. did that nobody else could do was
the way responded and how well the U.S. did. "The United States responded by attacking al–Qaeda
training camps in Afghanistan, one of several countries where the group had operations. The
government in Afghanistan was brutal and supported the terrorists, so less than a month after the
attacks of September 11, the United States invaded Afghanistan to break up al–Qaeda and the
Afghan government" (Pressler). The U.S. is seen as a major world leader, and responded to this is
not only to help their self, but also to prevent

The Events Of The War On Terror
Miller Porter Sgt. A. Pedry research paper 9/11 was a major focal point on the war on terror. It
changed America in many ways. There are two main view point's that will be gone over in this
research paper. The first and the most vital will be cultural historical viewpoint because it change
Americas culture and how the viewed the world in a major way. The next but less prominent is top–
down because in this research paper I will be talking about how the people in charge reacted to the
events that unfolded in 911 how their decisions shaped the world that is today. These will be the
historical viewpoints that will be shown in my research paper. The events of 911 changed America
culturally in multiple ways. It also brought American people in the light of a new threat, terrorism.
This changed America's outlook drastic. On September, 11, 2001,multiple Al Qaeda terrorists
boarded three passenger planes and then hijacked the planes and carried out suicide attacks against
the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC., killing everyone on
board the planes and nearly 3,000 people on the ground. A fourth plane crashed into a Pennsylvania
field, after passengers and crew attempted to take control from the hijackers. These attacks were
symbolic attacks against the United States and its people. Not only had it been a psychological
attack, it was the first attack in a long time that it happened on US soil. The terrorists were also
making symbolic attacks

Understanding Of War On The Terror
Understanding of war on the terror The most tearful and saddest day is the September 11, 2011. If I
was in that day during that event, kids like myself going to school and only put themselves glued to
a television screen or all the news of the radio to hear horror story as two air planes rammed
themselves into the World Trade Center. For those who were students, it was a vision that they
cannot comprehend as people were screaming and begging for help on the ground while those who
was in those building at that time of the attack jumped off to get a quick death. And for children at
those moments, when they went home, they could not see their parents, their brothers and sisters.
After few days passed by, they realize that their family was passed away. They lost their family
within few moments and they became orphans; they did not understand how this event would end up
being a wakeup call for everyone in the world; and this day will mark the moment of events in
United Stated history where regulations on security in airports. Not only airports, many other public
locations will change the way of thinking with this society nowadays. And few years later passed by,
those children who have become adults now think the world in a different scope compared to what it
was years ago, and along with those changes created a new generation that brings out the different
outlooks and opinions on how the world should react when facing impending threats that have the
capacity to jeopardize the

War On Terror Analysis
In this paper, I will critically analyze the complex relationship between anthropology and the so–
called 'War on Terror' by emphasizing the consequences it has and it might have for the discipline.
The recognition that anthropology's methods and skills are especially in demand in wartime has
once more posed the discipline in a central place within the social sciences. However, having
anthropologists working for the military might be considered a conflict of interest.
Should Anthropologist Study Terrorism?
In 2007, the American Anthropological Association called the Army's effort to embed social
scientists with combat units "an unacceptable application of anthropological expertise," citing a
moral conflict between studying groups of Iraqis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The role anthropologists are being asked to play is not oriented towards the soldiers, but towards the
local population, however, anthropologists could educate the military about how and why their
perceptions of what they are doing is at times erroneous and back it up with cultural anthropological
data, findings, and interpretation. Montgomery McFate, an anthropologist who was instrumental in
the founding of the Army program, says that Human Terrain Teams in Iraq can be credited with
everything from helping to protect archaeological sites to advising negotiations that led a Mahdi
Army commander to stop fighting coalition forces. And there's no question that troops on the ground
urgently need as much cultural information as they can get. One commander in Afghanistan, said
last year that after working with a Human Terrain Team, the number of armed strikes he had to make
declined more than 60

The war on terror Essay
Ever since the beginning of the terrorist attacks on American soil, the War on Terror has been
involved in the lives of Americans and nations near us. The War on Terror's background originated
through conflicts between warring countries in the Middle East; U.S. involvement started when a
terrorist guided plane crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 in New York City.
The attack was suspected to be the work of the middle–eastern terrorist group Al–Qaeda. The U.S.
military, under the leadership of then commander–in–chief George W. Bush, declared a "War on
Terror" on the terrorist group and the fighting began. Over ten plus years human rights and civil
liberties have been violated as thousands of innocent of civilians have ... Show more content on

According to the UN only 9,759 civilians have died in Afghanistan, but the Lansing medical journal
reports that 654,965 civilian casualties occurred in Iraq from 2003 to 2006 so these reports should
be taken with a grain of salt. On the pro–Saddam side of the war 76,778 Islamists fighters have died;
these deaths were made of security forces, private contractors, Sons of Iraq, and most were made up
of other supporters of the regime. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Armed Forces
have suffered 4,487 deaths and 32,223 were wounded in action as of May 2012.
As seen by these studies the people suffering are more so the families of the innocent civilians than
those who fought in the conflicts, and a lot of them were not killed by soldiers. As shown by sites
like WikiLeaks many civilian deaths are caused by mines or drones. These numbers show the
amount of devastation caused by the War on terror and more than ten years later these numbers are
still rising. Ultimately there are still over 50,000 troops in Afghanistan and there are still plans to
remain there for a while. Another consequence of the war is that in a combination of regarding the
safety of the homeland and getting an edge against possible threats, civil liberties have been violated
and human rights have been abused. After the 9/11 attack on Twin Towers and the Pentagon the U.S.
government has called for new forms of defense against possible attacks

War On Terror Analysis
The United States of America, since the end of the greatest war our world has gone through WWII,
has believed itself to be a world "hegemony." However, at the turn of the millennium, that title
seems to have outgrown its welcome. The United States, over the past fifty years, has placed her
focus to those nations in need of a democratic government. However, while the United States may
have had the best interests at heart, or even on the surface, this foreign policy needs to be revamped
to meet the needs of the international community, if the United States is to continue playing the
"World Police" card. In the "War on Terror" the United States begins a new round of missionary
democracy across the Middle East, at least, in the invasive manner ... Show more content on

And even though these nations may be presented to positive characteristics of American society,
such as individual liberty, rule of law, and economic prosperity, it also, unfortunately, this ideology
also exposes nations to the worst traits of American society and culture, including materialism,
militarism, and racism. This American culture, based in capitalism, develops more aspirations and
social pressures; establishes an importance on individual choice that cripples traditional male
authority; and liberal sexual attitudes. This subjection, resistance to American individualism, and the
history of the Western methods to the Middle East, has generated an opening for militant groups to
garner support and public credibility to challenge American aided regimes. From the time of the
Crusades through the European colonial era to the ongoing bombing and sanctions against the
Middle Eastern nations, Western Christians have killed far more Muslims than the reverse. Given
the history of the relationship between the United Sates and certain Middle Eastern nations, the
American government, and policy of military threat and force, inflated sanctions and retraction from
the United Nations, and its support of oppositional governments result in the reaction that has been
characterized of religious extremism. Additionally, the reform proposed by American forces it
equates reform with pro–Americanism, and therefore it inhibits those who engage Muslim societies
critically to submit their critique freely without the fear of having their views misappropriated. And
similarly, this criticism is

because countries worry about their citizen from the terrorism. The United States and other countries

The War On Terror And Terrorism
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Bush administration declared a worldwide
"war on terror," consisting of open and covert military operations and security legislations in an
effort to block the financing of terrorism. The U.S. called for states across world to join their fight
against terrorism (Globalpolicy.org, 2015). This essay will be arguing if the U.S. was justified in
their advances or if they have used the attacks against them in order to launch a war against those it
suspected, using the attacks as a justification for torture and mistreatment of people across the
world.
In a post 9–11 society, the question of security has become the first priority of governments and
terrified Westerners, in particular, Americans as they struggle to reconcile with the possibility of
conflicting ideals and lifestyles. The War on Terror has never truly been about the war against
militants, but has rather been, similar to the Cold War in much more gruesome and misguided a way
in which the Western countries, hereafter symbolized by the United States predominantly have
found a new way to flex political muscle while oppressing other people across the globe through
torture and destruction. The War on Terror is a poorly justified attack on human rights, a poor excuse
for retaliation and progress, and is ultimately another way for the political culture of the West to
permeate into other countries with their own lifestyles, international policies and simply be the one

On september 11, 2001 there was an attack on America. Four airplanes were hijacked, two were
crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the third crashed into the Pentagon in D.C.
and the fourth got stopped by a passenger. It was the first terrorist attack on the U.S. soil. Thousands
of lives were lost that day. This attach was the most devastating act of belligerence on U.S territory
since the Civil War (Terrorism, 2011). This even had an enormous influence on America and its
history. It led to numerous short and long term effects. On September 20, 2001, former president

TSA is able to open and search passenger's luggage for security screening, not many people like this
ability. In some cases the agents don't replace the locks or close them properly. TSA has two
companies make different kinds of locks that can be opened and relocked by special tools and
information by the manufacturer. A positive side to this note is that if a passengers TSA approved
lock is missing they can file a claim with form SF–95. (Security, 2010) People get irritated by this,
because no one wants people going through their personal belongings. Despite the fact that this is a
simple way to detect if someone is carrying a bomb, any other type of explosives or anything else
that could be dangerous boarding a plane.
In the beginning of November 2010 TSA added new screening procedures. The new screening
procedures were created because of the reactions of the "Underwear bomber". That person smuggled
plastic explosives onto and airplane in December 2009. These procedures include the backscatter X–
ray and the sliding pat–downs. The backscatter X–ray displays images of passenger's bodies. During
sliding pat–downs officers screen passenger's breast, buttocks and genitals with the back of their
hand. All pat–downs are done by a TSA officer of same gender of that passenger. And if requested
the procedure can be done in a private room. "On November 23, 2010 TSA officials said that some

September 11, 2001 is a date that has been etched into our nation's history. On that date, four
airplanes were hijacked by men from the terrorist group, al–Qaeda, and were used as weapons of an
act of terrorism. In the span of about three hours, the four planes that've been hijacked crashed into
New York City's World Trade Center, the Pentagon just outside of Washington DC, and onto a field
in Pennsylvania. On this date, approximately three thousand americans were killed that morning. In
effect, it has caused a "Global War on Terror". Under Bush's Administration, our Department of

The term enhanced interrogation techniques is constantly being used in lieu of the word torture. This
may be due to the fact that the form of torture is illegal in the United States.
However, with torture being illegal on United States soil, there is a loophole in the situation. Places
like Guantanamo Bay for example, are military prisons or detention camps containing prisoners
being put through abuse and torture. Rayman's article for Time magazine, "Guantanamo Bay
Detainee Details 'Sadistic ' Abuse.", describes "a man detained in Guantanamo Bay for nearly 13
years has said he was subjected to 'dirty and sadistic' abuse at the prison..." (Rayman). Guantanamo
Bay is located in Cuba. While Cuba has sovereignty over the camp, the United States total is being
given total control and jurisdiction over the camp. Allowing the United States to perform harsh

Essay on The War on Terror
War on terror refers to the ongoing military campaign led by U.S and U.K against organizations
identified as terrorists. Terrorism can be defined as an unlawful violence or war deliberately targeted
to civilians. It can also be defined as a systematic use of terror to coerce or violent acts intended to
create fear. This threat is normally perpetrated for religious, political or ideological goals. The
conflict as also called by other names. They include World War III, The Long War, War on
Terrorism, Bush's War on Terror, The Global War of Terror and War on Al–Qaeda, (Coaty, 2010).

Underlying conditions that terrorists seek to exploit were reduced. This was a measure that was used
to reduce the chances of unlawful attacks on the globe. U.S partnered with the international
community to empower weak states and prevent emergence of terrorism. To date, this can be seen in
Libya, Cote Devore and Somalia where the states have no proper governments. The international
troops have been deployed in the above states to ensure that terrorists do not utilize such loopholes
to attack the citizens.
Fighting the War on Terror
War on terror is a global challenge. A number of ways have been put across to fight the problem led
by the United States of America. Defeating terrorist has been found to be a very effective way of
fighting this threat. It is achieved by identity, location and destruction of the terrorists along with
their organizations. Once the unlawful activities are spotted, they are confirmed and relevant actions
taken against them instantly. Evidence is the U.S bombing of Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan in
pursuit of Al– Qaeda network which was successful because Osama was later found and killed.
Strategy of targeted killings is also a major way to fight terror. This is a method that focuses on the
individuals who bear the greatest responsibility. The aim is to catch them alive or dead. It has indeed
borne fruit over the years. Evidence is the demise of Sadaam, Fazul and the recent killing of Osama

The Global War on Terror
Since the events of September 11, 2001, the American Public has been fascinated with what has
become known as the "Global War on Terror." Public support of the War on Terror has fluctuated
since the invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, with support significantly dropping as
the wars continued. This waning support has caused many to question the effectiveness of the War
on Terror in the Middle East. By examining research conducted both prior to and after the
September 11 attacks and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, this paper demonstrates that overall
participation in organized terror activities has increased overtime; therefore, the "War on Terror" has
had minimal success in reducing the number of violent terror attacks and political violence groups in
the Middle East. This paper will begin by defining terrorism and "War on Terror", as both terms are
disputed by scholars. Afterwards, two other major points found in literature will be discussed–
growth of organized terror organizations and impact that the War on Terror has had on these
organizations. Next, the paper will discuss insurgency, which is another common type of political
violence that occurs in the Middle East. Afterwards, the paper will discuss the shortcomings in the
U.S. approach to counterinsurgency and two ways that the war on terror has failed to stop
insurgency. The U.S. role in the War on Terror will then be analyzed through the use of drones in

By 1975, four tons of cocaine had entered the US, and by 1980, 100 tons had entered (Gootenberg

Around this time, Mexican cartels rose to power. According to here are seven major Mexican

however he escaped due to police corruption. His trial has been very public, bringing attention to the

The Cold War and the War on Terror
Eerily, it seems that during the Cold War and the War on Terror, many of the feelings that citizens
felt were the same, but what America called the enemy was different. Following the September 11th
attacks, there was a feeling of paranoia felt throughout America similar to the paranoia felt during
the Cold War. Americans did not feel safe, and an attack could come at any time. The fight on the
home front looked different during the Cold War and the War on Terrorism. During the Cold War
there was more of a correlation between fighting Communism, and buying consumer goods. During
the war on terrorism Americans were asked to give up some of their rights in order to maintain their
safety. There is an abundance of similarities between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Story of American Freedom, Foner writes, "A new ford now seemed as essential to the
enjoyment of freedom's benefits as the right to vote or workplace autonomy once had been." During
the War on Terror, consumerism was not stressed the way it was during the Cold War. What was
stressed during the War on Terrorism was the idea that we had to return to the way America was
before September 11th. If we could not do that, "The terrorists had won." The film Dr. Strangelove
is very critical of the American government during the Cold War. The film features a commander
named "Jack D. Ripper," who orders an attack on Communist Russia because he thinks they are
secretly trying to add fluoride to the American water supply. Later in the movie, the President calls
upon a former Nazi to help him figure out how to deal with the repercussions of Ripper's actions.
Several times during the film, the former Nazi refers to the President as "Mein Fuher." It was no
accident on Stanley Kubrick's part to have the President referred to as such. Kubrick successfully
showed the similarities between dropping an atomic bomb and committing genocide. The graphic
novel series Watchmen is also quite critical of America during the Cold War. In Watchmen, Richard
Nixon is in his fourth term as President, and nuclear war with Russia is becoming more and more
likely. In order to maintain peace on earth, one of the characters simulates an alien invasion. The
idea was that America and

The Cold War On Terror
While this may be without shame, it is certainly not without peril. The glue that binds the
conservative movement together is an external factor over which the conservatives themselves have
no control. Conservatives have found a new adhesive in the current Global War on Terror (the
"GWOT). Though the threat of terrorism shows no signs of abating any time soon, it could end in
much the same way as the Cold War ended. 9/11 and the subsequent War on Terror have created a
new conservative alignment that provides the framework for modern approaches to national security
and foreign policy.
In the absence of an existential external threat, conservatives must look for domestic antagonists, of
which there are many. Abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, climate–focused environmental policy, gun
control and stem cell research are equally promising targets. Though the presence of such common
antagonists might strengthen the conservative coalition, they may prove to be fragile ground on
which to build a new conservative solidarity. Rather than seeking common enemies, the
Conservative movement must work on uniting itself from within. It should focus on narrowing the
internal divisions and reconciling its disparate identities. If conservatism is to remain a prominent
political force in the future, it is more likely to succeed by standing for something identifiable and
compelling, rather than standing against anything that tends to liberalism.
The Conservative movement must also avoid

Narco–Terror: the United States, the Drug War, and the War on Terror
Introduction
The United States has had a long–standing policy of intervening in the affairs of other nations when
the country has thought it within its best interests to do so. Since the 1970's the United States has
tried to impose its will on other nations to combat the most pressing political enemy of the day often
linking the war on drugs to the matter to stoke support both domestically and abroad. In the times of
the Cold War, this enemy was communism and the government tried to make the connection of the
"Red Dope Menace" insinuating drug links with China, Castro's Cuba, and the Sandinistas in
Nicaragua. However, as the world has evolved and communism's ... Show more content on

These kingpins consolidated their operations into cartels that would control the entire supply chain
of the drug trade to maximize logistical efficiency along with revenues and profits. In the early
1980's there were two major cartels in Colombia named for the cities that they were headquartered
in. The older cartel was the Cali cartel, an immense enterprise with subsidiaries in banking, real
estate, and even an airline (Scott 94). Competing with the Cali cartel for market share was the
Medellin cartel led by a man who would become synonymous with Colombian narco–terrorism,
Pablo Escobar.
The two cartels had vastly different styles with the Cali cartel preferring to view itself as more of a
legitimate business with an executive structure that mirrors the organizational designs of many
Fortune 500 companies complete with vice–presidents and divisions. Indeed, Colombian police
began referring to the Cali cartel as "Los Caballeros" or "the gentlemen," giving rise to the great
respect enjoyed by the cartel throughout Colombia. Contrastingly, the Colombia police called
employees of the Medellin "Los Hampones" or "the hoodlums" (Chepesiuk 23). Indeed, the brash
style of the Medellin cartel saw terror and violence as a means for controlling its stake in the cocaine
trade. The principal proponent of this methodology was Escobar himself, who even used terrorism

WAR ON TERROR I, myself, before September 11, 2001 did not know what terrorism was. It is
completely a new term for me, and I could never figure how terrible it is. But then, experiencing and
witnessing the feeling of losing the one you loved who was a victim of that disaster, I recognized
that the world is no longer as safe as before. Today, not only America but also Britain, Spain,
Indonesia...became the target of terrorists. The terror tissue is the most challenged thing for all the
governments to solve. Even though after September 11, 2001, US has attacked and destroyed a lot
terrorists' bases in over the world, the terrorists still survive and keep aiming to US and its allies.

To gain more power and more influences to other half of the world, Soviet Union and its allies such
as Syria, Libya secretly supported the terror group and used them as a political tool to break down
the Western countries. The terror groups such as PFLP and the PLO usually targeted to citizen of
Israel, and US allies. Although the ending of tension and completion between the Soviet Union and
the United States led to the termination of the Soviet Union, and many of the terrorist of groups
based in the United States and Western Europe began wither after Communism fell, terrorism did
not disappear. In order to maintain and survive, terrorism needs to have a sponsor. The state
sponsors of terrorism are between Iran, Syria and their sponsorship group Hezbollah. Iranians have
expanded their impact through the Middle East and mainly in Lebanon by helping with the founding

The Global War On Terror
Under the United States spearheaded campaign on the global war on terror; much debate has come
forth after the populous learned of the coercive methods employed by the various U.S intelligence
agencies. This highly controversial topic came to fruition after the media broadcast precarious
images of deprived terrorist detainees confined to the Guantanomo military compound in Cuba. The
U.S where using a variety of “methods” to attain usable intelligence to better protect both the
civilian populous, and Armed Forces service persons currently waging the war on terror. The
question arises, is the means of torturing persons ethical in the moral, social and especially legal
sense? Using a comparative analysis with both the United States common law system and Frances
civil law system, I hope to conclude an effective answer. It is also imperative to comprehend
historical, moral and social aspects of the use and effectiveness of torture. The United States of
America and the world in general are at war. America and several nations are not fighting a
conventional war where two established adversaries meet in battle. They are instead fighting an
unconventional war where the enemy is a non governmental organization of sorts that blends into
the general population and commits act of terror. These terrorists do not adhere to the conventional
rules of combat engagement and aim to strike fear within the general populous to promote a certain
ideal they deem profoundly important.

Introduction. The United States' War on Terror is a mistake because it is bringing more burdens and
terrorism to the United States at home and abroad. The United States' War on Terror following the
attacks on 9/11 began with the invasion of Afghanistan and an attempt to to overthrow the Taliban
government for harboring Osama bin Laden, the one responsible for the devastating attacks, led to
devastating casualties of American and Taliban soldiers, as well as countless civilians. The United
States launched Operation Enduring Freedom on October 7, 2001 and began a ground and air attack
in Afghanistan. In the first year of the war, it is reported that between 1537 to 2490 civilians were
killed in the air assault led by U.S. forces (Guilliard 66). The U.S. swiftly defeated the Taliban but
failed to capture Bin Laden before he escaped to Pakistan. It is reported that roughly 13,000 Talibani
soldiers were killed in the first year of the war Guilliard 74). This led to very poor relations with

The Tragedy Of The War On Terror
Throughout the history of our great country we have had very tragic incidents happen, and things we
wish we could forget and discard them from our history just like other certain nations. One of the
many tragic historical events are assassinations of important political figures and pop icons. Or other
events like 9/11 and the Columbine school massacre which drastically affected the future of our
country. On 9/11 we were thrusted into the war on terror, and for Columbine we had to make gun
control for a nation that is so hell bent on the second amendment that it's still hard to get legislation
through. As for assassinations, we look at people like Lincoln. This great man who did so much for
this country yet had to die due to the outlook on slavery. Although when you really look at his death
it was not as bad because the Civil War had already ended and we were on our way to reconstruct
the South. But when you look at someone like JFK it is very drastic. At a time where tensions were
rising with the threat of communism and the Civil Rights Movement and him being a young
president who a lot of people resonated with, that it was such a huge hit on America at this
influential point in time that made his death a tragedy. This really shaped the way Americans
thought about their government, and whether what they tell us is the truth or a bag of lies or fact
versus fiction. The assassination of one of the most Mandato 2 important political leaders of the

Introduction
Thesis: Since the 9/11 terrorists' attacks, terrorism has extended far beyond the United States and
into other nations such as Africa. Even though these acts of aggressions take place outside of the
United States, the government should have the capability to counteract groups who engage in the
terrorism without fear of reprisal. Therefore, the establishment of a new Combatant Command for
Africa (AFRICOM) should mark an important milestone in the prevention of the terrorist attacks
against the United States. Africa Command in partnership with African countries will help protect

policymakers have devoted a significant amount of resources in recent years to study the strategic
importance of Africa. They have noted Africa's growing strategic importance to U.S. interests.
Among those interests is the aggregate significance of Africa's natural resources, principally energy
capitals, and growing concerns over violent radical activities and other potential threats posed by
under–governed spaces, such as maritime piracy and illicit trafficking. In addition, there is an
ongoing concern for Africa's many humanitarian crises, armed conflicts, and more everyday
challenges that undermine the stability of the African continent, such as the devastating effect of
HIV/AIDS. The establishment of U.S. Africa Command in response to these challenges correctly
illustrated the strategic importance of Africa. Hence, by emphasizing the relationships between
security, development, diplomacy and prosperity in Africa, the Department of Defense (DoD)
intends to better focus its resources on supporting and enhancing existing U.S. initiatives to help
African nations and the regional economic communities succeed. However, to accomplish this
mission, the DoD must expand AFRICOM's functions including its objectives and priorities beyond

War On Terror And Terrorism
War on Terror After the incident of September 11, 2001, War on Terror became a serious problem.
That attack made huge effects on U.S government and many other countries. Many innocent people
lost their lives because of those terrorists. No one knows if an incident like the one on September 11
will happen again, but we have to know that "we are the primary target". According to Patrick
Coaty's "War on Terror," the terrorism has been developed throughout history. So that people should
know to fight the war on terror, and be prepared from another attack like the one on September 11,
2001. According to Coaty's War on Terror, terrorism can be divided in three different levels:
individual, state, and international environment. During the French revolution, terrorism was
developed the first time, and some groups of people gathered to clean the evils of monarchy. They
want to overthrow the weak government and establish a new one that can bring them a better life.
After that, terrorism was expanded to the Soviet, and it became the best tool for them to control
people, including their lifestyle and their own privacy. Under the Soviet's control, terrorism has been
developed and spread to many other countries around the world. Meanwhile, the Stalin's policies
were applied to control German by Adolf Hitler. Hitler killed all the people who helped him on his
political career. Hitler and Nazi Party control a major Nazi organization, the Schutzstaffel. This

The War On Terror Essay
When President Bush called Americans to enlist in his "war on terror," very few citizens could have
grasped the all–encompassing consequences of the proposition. The terrifying events of 9/11 were
like a blinding flash, benumbing the country with a sudden knowledge of unimagined dangers.
Strong action was recommended, skeptics were silenced and a shallow sense of unity emerged from
the shared vulnerabilities. Nearly three years later, the enormity of Bush's summons to open–ended
"war" is more obvious. It overwhelmed the country, in fact deranged society's normal processes and
purposes with a brilliantly seductive political message: Terror pre–empts everything else.

East Germany's economy was larger than West Germany's. People believed them.
In much the same way, the worldwide network of supposed or potential allies of Osama bin Laden
has been steadily expanded by government alerts since
9/11. These fanatical terrorists are not just in the Middle East; the same type has been spotted in East
Asia and Africa, even South America. National security experts urge counterterrorism actions, just
in case. Who can say the "intelligence" is wrong? How can citizens even weigh the "facts" when
government keeps most of them secret?
"War on terror" is useful for the President, but irrational for the nation.
Terrorism is not an enemy; it is a method of using violence to gain political objectives. Its tactics are
usually employed by weaker, irregular groups against governments that possess organized armies
and the modern means for waging war formally and more destructively (both methods of violence
may target and destroy the lives of innocents). Terror campaigns are cruel by nature but in some
instances are regarded as righteous, when the violence is used to liberate oppressed peoples from
colonial rule, as in
Vietnam or Ireland, the creation of Israel or even the United States.

War on Terror On September 11, 2001, our country was hit with enormous devastation, just after
eight o'clock a.m. the first of the twin towers was struck by a suicide pilot, the second was struck

the lives of many. A plane also hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and another in rural
Pennsylvania causing just as much grief. The U.S. is still in mourning, but standing tall, more

There can only be legal arrest and confinement until trial has been determined their guilt in the

overwhelmingly of the belief that war, in the present circumstances cannot be justified. It is not only
unjustified, it is immoral – in its devastating consequences for the 23 million people of Iraq, it is
ignoring the wished of the people and it is counter–productive – in stimulating the forces of
terrorism. "Terrorism" is best defined as the threat or use of violence, often against the civilian
population, to achieve political or social ends, it intimidate opponents. It can also be defined as a
policy of calculated and coercive intimidation, designed to achieve a strategic objective by sowing
fear among non–combatants. Its definition does not depend on the objectives that are sought, or
whether it is a government or opposition group. Though the distinction between "terrorist" and
"freedom fighter" usually inspires debate on the legitimacy of their ends, terrorism is fundamentally
a matter of means. This is like saying that there are "good terrorist" and "bad terrorist." Since

The War on Terror
Introduction
The war on terror is not easy to define partly due to its vagueness and unsparing use of rhetorical
device to justify any action of military perpetrated after the 9/11. However, the The war on terror, in
its original intent, is a series of initiatives that seek to reduce or eliminate terrorism in the world. In
this perspective, terrorism is the deliberate exploitation and creation of fear through threat and
violence (Kugiel 16–17). This essay seeks to present an argument that the war on terror was not
worth it.
In order to justify whether the war on terror is worth it or not, it is vital to understand if the war on
terror compels or deters terrorism. Deterrence refers to the threat of force perpetrated to prevent an
adversary from engaging in any specific course of action. To compel in the same context refers to
the threat of force perpetrated to motivate an adversary to undo an already done or to begin a
specific course of action.
Terrorism in its nature disrupts international security and peace via premeditated political violence.
The terror act on the 11th of September on the Center of World Trade and the Pentagon greatly
disrupted the global economy. The attacks facilitated and spawned widespread personal panic, fear,
and economic dislocation. According to the UN Security Council, one of the terrorists' objectives
was to create a state of global anarchy by means of influencing

The Global War on Terror
A Middle Ground Essay about the Global War on Terror Introduction Over the last several years, the
approach that is used in the War on Terror has been increasingly brought to the forefront. This is
because there has been a shift in public opinion about the impact of specific events and the tactics to
achieve a host of objectives. A good example of this can be seen with the use of special operations
forces and the shooting spree of Robert Bales. He was an American soldier who was on his fourth
tour in Afghanistan. One night after drinking heavily is when he snapped and went on a shooting
spree (killing 16 civilians). This has an adverse impact on the US military's involvement in the
region and the tactics they are using to achieve different objectives in the War of Terror. As a result,
this is illustrating how a balanced approach must be taken over the long term. This will allow the
nation to deal with the costs and resources of fighting this war more effectively. Over the long term,
these kinds of techniques will make the US more efficient in going after terrorist organizations (by
taking a middle of the road approach). ("Sergeant Robert Bales,") This is appropriate, in illustrating
how the middle ground approach is necessary at this time. The reason why is: the military and other
resources are being increasingly strained by this long commitment. If there was a strategy that
focused on different aspects of the War on Terror, personnel would be more effective in rooting

the United States did not use military action against these groups, then terrorists would continue to
attack America or other countries and take even more lives (Bush). For Bush, war was the only
answer in order to protect his country. Similarly, Vice President Richard Cheney advocated war in

American citizens rallied in support of this movement and also supported the war because of it.
Although some conditions have improved for women, the United States did not do as much as they

Is The War On Terror Ethical?
Is the War on Terror ethical? Since the establishments of governments, since human societies had
kings and queens, since governments were run under a religious doctrine, there has always been
conflict between different groups of people. There will always be differences among people of
different cultures, religions, race and ethnicity. There has always been a division of power between
people and inequality in the world. There was a point in human history that slaves were bought and
sold as property, as if life was insignificant and could be bought again. It was the norm between
cultures to push away any new movement that threatened ideologies of their regime and it was
necessary to maintain control of their people. It is difficult to imagine a world where people didn't

The "War on Terror" is a term used to describe the military action taken by America and Canada
after the events of September 11, 2001. This phrase is symbolic of the justification of acts that
varied in legality and morality as a means to safe guard the security of the nation. These actions
were perceived as necessary, top priority and essential but in actuality striped individuals of their
rights, were unconstitutional and based not of factual information but racism and bigotry. The
justifying of such intrusive acts in the name of protecting the nation is not a new phenomenon but
can be dated back to the mid nineteen hundreds and is still used today. Canada prides itself as a

Handling The War On Terror
Handling the War on Terror The Global War on Terror, or War on Terror, with the United States at
the helm, is the second most expensive war in American history, having surpassed $2 trillion. At the
same time, little has been accomplished for domestic security or the destruction of terror groups.
The United States needs a clear, focused strategy to suppress terrorist groups, while at the same time
eliminating the causes for terrorism. I propose a gradual drawdown and closing of US bases and
garrisons around the world. I also propose a serious global coalition to tackle ISIS, with a clear plan
and exit strategy. At the same time, negotiating an agreement cannot be overlooked. The GWoT
(Global War on Terror) is recognized as officially starting after the September 11 attacks. It is called
"global" because it involves military actions, politics, and law against terror groups anywhere in the
world. Current hostilities are being fought by NATO and ISAF countries with countless independent
agreements. The main adversaries of this global coalition are al–Qaeda, al–Nursa, ISIS/ISIL
(Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), and Boko Haram. Despite the efforts of this anti–terror
alliance, terror groups operate unhindered and terror attacks seem to be increasing. There are several
key problems with the U.S. WoT strategy. The main one is the difficulty of detecting and fighting
guerilla threats. Another key problem is the rules of engagement and collateral damage. The third

The goal of the War on Terror defined by President Bush is "Our war on terror begins with Al
Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been
found, stopped and defeated". The problem with this goal is that it is unrealistic and that the
definition of a terrorist varies with in countries. For example those who are labeled freedom fighters
in one nation can be considered terrorists in another. People argue that there is no real enemy and
that those who do a terrorist act should be handled through the Judicial System and not by the
military. An example of this is the Boston bombings. Another problem with the War on Terror is that
it has added about $1.7 trillion to $18 trillion onto the United States debt. It has also taken jobs away
from the American people due to the fact that for every $1 billion given as a tax cut supplies a
demand to create 10,779 jobs when $1 billion spent on defense creates 8,555 jobs. Meaning that for
every billion we spend of defense takes away 2,224 jobs. Another thing is that due to the war in Iraq
and Afghanistan people argue that President's Bush's true goal was to "strengthen the U.S. grip on
the Middle East, turn Iraq into a military and political platform for further aggression, gain tighter
control of international energy supplies, control and reshape the entire arc from North Africa to

The War On Terror ( Wot )
The War on Terror (WoT), also known as the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), refers to the
international military campaign that started after the September 11 attacks on the United States.[47]
U.S. President George W. Bush first used the term "War on Terror" on 20 September 2001.[47] The
Bush administration and the western media have since used the term to argue a global military,
political, legal, and conceptual struggle against both organizations designated terrorist and regimes
accused of supporting them. It was originally used with a particular focus on countries associated
with Islamic terrorism organizations including al–Qaeda and like–minded organizations.
In 2013, President Barack Obama announced that the United States was no longer pursuing a War
on Terror, as the military focus should be on specific enemies rather than a tactic. He stated, "We
must define our effort not as a boundless 'Global War on Terror ', but rather as a series of persistent,
targeted efforts to dismantle specific networks of violent extremists that threaten America."[48]
The phrase "War on Terror" has been used to specifically refer to the ongoing military campaign led
by the U.S., UK and their allies against organizations and regimes identified by them as terrorist,
and excludes other independent counter–terrorist operations and campaigns such as those by Russia
and India. The conflict has also been referred to by names other than the War on Terror.

Within the history of the United States, there have been many enemies, foreign and domestic;
among these combatants are terrorists led by radical Islam. These terrorists first major offensive

Introduction. The United States' War on Terror is a mistake because it is bringing more burdens and
terrorism to the United States at home and abroad. While the October 11, 2001, U.S. invasion of
Afghanistan is considered to be rightfully justified by 9/11, there is evidence to show that the
January 17, 1991 Operation Desert Storm, which started the issues in the Middle East, was merely
justified by the fear of a monopoly on the world's oil by the ruthless dictator Saddam Hussein. This
event is essential to understanding the current War on Terror, given that it is the beginning of the US
involvement in the Middle East. Therefore, understanding what occurred in 1990, is necessary to
understanding the reasons behind the current War on Terror. On August 1, 1990, the Iraqi dictator,
Saddam Hussein, ordered an attack on Iraq's neighbor Kuwait, who had been a part of Iraq until
1961. Hussein stated that he was simply reuniting what should have never been divided. April

War On Terror Ideology

  • 1. War On Terror Ideology Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, then President George W. Bush stated "[o]ur war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated" (Bush, 2001, p. NA). The nature of the war on terror has changed dramatically since its inception in 2001. With al Qaeda decimated, its remaining leaders, members and supporters have fractured into several splinter groups each with their own aspirations. With varying ideologies, tactics, techniques and procedures, the strategy for dealing with these groups must be as complex and comprehensive as the groups themselves. The War on Terror is a war of ideology. A war of ideas between Western democracy and Salafi Islam. A war of indefinite length, waged in complex social–political environments, against an adaptive and evolving enemy. Wars of ideology are rarely, if ever, won. Rather, "they tend to drag on, unless an event occurs that causes the belligerents to focus their attention elsewhere" (Echevarria, 2008, p. vi). When they do draw to a close the opposing ideologies likely remain with the "winner" having done little more than marginalize the opposing set of beliefs. For example, the Cold War is often cited as " [t]he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. The War on Terror On September 11, 2001, a man by the name of Osama Bin Laden changed the world using four planes. Crashing one into the pentagon, two into the World Trade Center in New York City, and the never forgotten fourth one that was brought down, by passengers, in a field in Pennsylvania. Because of these four planes people can not do many things the same, for instance people can not get on a plane without going through an hour or two of security. But Thirteen years after the biggest terrorist attack the world had ever seen, the War on Terror remains a vital problem for the U.S Military. The War on terror has been a main focus for the U.S for many years now. The U.S. first got involved in the war on September 11th, 2001, when two planes crashed in to the World Trade Center in New York City, and one in to the Pentagon in Washington D.C., making it the worst thing that has happened on U.S soil since Pearl Harbor. The one thing the U.S. did that nobody else could do was the way responded and how well the U.S. did. "The United States responded by attacking al–Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan, one of several countries where the group had operations. The government in Afghanistan was brutal and supported the terrorists, so less than a month after the attacks of September 11, the United States invaded Afghanistan to break up al–Qaeda and the Afghan government" (Pressler). The U.S. is seen as a major world leader, and responded to this is not only to help their self, but also to prevent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Events Of The War On Terror Miller Porter Sgt. A. Pedry research paper 9/11 was a major focal point on the war on terror. It changed America in many ways. There are two main view point's that will be gone over in this research paper. The first and the most vital will be cultural historical viewpoint because it change Americas culture and how the viewed the world in a major way. The next but less prominent is top– down because in this research paper I will be talking about how the people in charge reacted to the events that unfolded in 911 how their decisions shaped the world that is today. These will be the historical viewpoints that will be shown in my research paper. The events of 911 changed America culturally in multiple ways. It also brought American people in the light of a new threat, terrorism. This changed America's outlook drastic. On September, 11, 2001,multiple Al Qaeda terrorists boarded three passenger planes and then hijacked the planes and carried out suicide attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC., killing everyone on board the planes and nearly 3,000 people on the ground. A fourth plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field, after passengers and crew attempted to take control from the hijackers. These attacks were symbolic attacks against the United States and its people. Not only had it been a psychological attack, it was the first attack in a long time that it happened on US soil. The terrorists were also making symbolic attacks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Understanding Of War On The Terror Understanding of war on the terror The most tearful and saddest day is the September 11, 2011. If I was in that day during that event, kids like myself going to school and only put themselves glued to a television screen or all the news of the radio to hear horror story as two air planes rammed themselves into the World Trade Center. For those who were students, it was a vision that they cannot comprehend as people were screaming and begging for help on the ground while those who was in those building at that time of the attack jumped off to get a quick death. And for children at those moments, when they went home, they could not see their parents, their brothers and sisters. After few days passed by, they realize that their family was passed away. They lost their family within few moments and they became orphans; they did not understand how this event would end up being a wakeup call for everyone in the world; and this day will mark the moment of events in United Stated history where regulations on security in airports. Not only airports, many other public locations will change the way of thinking with this society nowadays. And few years later passed by, those children who have become adults now think the world in a different scope compared to what it was years ago, and along with those changes created a new generation that brings out the different outlooks and opinions on how the world should react when facing impending threats that have the capacity to jeopardize the ... • 17. War On Terror Analysis In this paper, I will critically analyze the complex relationship between anthropology and the so– called 'War on Terror' by emphasizing the consequences it has and it might have for the discipline. The recognition that anthropology's methods and skills are especially in demand in wartime has once more posed the discipline in a central place within the social sciences. However, having anthropologists working for the military might be considered a conflict of interest. Should Anthropologist Study Terrorism? In 2007, the American Anthropological Association called the Army's effort to embed social scientists with combat units "an unacceptable application of anthropological expertise," citing a moral conflict between studying groups of Iraqis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The role anthropologists are being asked to play is not oriented towards the soldiers, but towards the local population, however, anthropologists could educate the military about how and why their perceptions of what they are doing is at times erroneous and back it up with cultural anthropological data, findings, and interpretation. Montgomery McFate, an anthropologist who was instrumental in the founding of the Army program, says that Human Terrain Teams in Iraq can be credited with everything from helping to protect archaeological sites to advising negotiations that led a Mahdi Army commander to stop fighting coalition forces. And there's no question that troops on the ground urgently need as much cultural information as they can get. One commander in Afghanistan, said last year that after working with a Human Terrain Team, the number of armed strikes he had to make declined more than 60 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The war on terror Essay Ever since the beginning of the terrorist attacks on American soil, the War on Terror has been involved in the lives of Americans and nations near us. The War on Terror's background originated through conflicts between warring countries in the Middle East; U.S. involvement started when a terrorist guided plane crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 in New York City. The attack was suspected to be the work of the middle–eastern terrorist group Al–Qaeda. The U.S. military, under the leadership of then commander–in–chief George W. Bush, declared a "War on Terror" on the terrorist group and the fighting began. Over ten plus years human rights and civil liberties have been violated as thousands of innocent of civilians have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the UN only 9,759 civilians have died in Afghanistan, but the Lansing medical journal reports that 654,965 civilian casualties occurred in Iraq from 2003 to 2006 so these reports should be taken with a grain of salt. On the pro–Saddam side of the war 76,778 Islamists fighters have died; these deaths were made of security forces, private contractors, Sons of Iraq, and most were made up of other supporters of the regime. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Armed Forces have suffered 4,487 deaths and 32,223 were wounded in action as of May 2012. As seen by these studies the people suffering are more so the families of the innocent civilians than those who fought in the conflicts, and a lot of them were not killed by soldiers. As shown by sites like WikiLeaks many civilian deaths are caused by mines or drones. These numbers show the amount of devastation caused by the War on terror and more than ten years later these numbers are still rising. Ultimately there are still over 50,000 troops in Afghanistan and there are still plans to remain there for a while. Another consequence of the war is that in a combination of regarding the safety of the homeland and getting an edge against possible threats, civil liberties have been violated and human rights have been abused. After the 9/11 attack on Twin Towers and the Pentagon the U.S. government has called for new forms of defense against possible attacks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. War On Terror Analysis The United States of America, since the end of the greatest war our world has gone through WWII, has believed itself to be a world "hegemony." However, at the turn of the millennium, that title seems to have outgrown its welcome. The United States, over the past fifty years, has placed her focus to those nations in need of a democratic government. However, while the United States may have had the best interests at heart, or even on the surface, this foreign policy needs to be revamped to meet the needs of the international community, if the United States is to continue playing the "World Police" card. In the "War on Terror" the United States begins a new round of missionary democracy across the Middle East, at least, in the invasive manner ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And even though these nations may be presented to positive characteristics of American society, such as individual liberty, rule of law, and economic prosperity, it also, unfortunately, this ideology also exposes nations to the worst traits of American society and culture, including materialism, militarism, and racism. This American culture, based in capitalism, develops more aspirations and social pressures; establishes an importance on individual choice that cripples traditional male authority; and liberal sexual attitudes. This subjection, resistance to American individualism, and the history of the Western methods to the Middle East, has generated an opening for militant groups to garner support and public credibility to challenge American aided regimes. From the time of the Crusades through the European colonial era to the ongoing bombing and sanctions against the Middle Eastern nations, Western Christians have killed far more Muslims than the reverse. Given the history of the relationship between the United Sates and certain Middle Eastern nations, the American government, and policy of military threat and force, inflated sanctions and retraction from the United Nations, and its support of oppositional governments result in the reaction that has been characterized of religious extremism. Additionally, the reform proposed by American forces it equates reform with pro–Americanism, and therefore it inhibits those who engage Muslim societies critically to submit their critique freely without the fear of having their views misappropriated. And similarly, this criticism is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Coaty 14 May, 2015 Many victims have been harmed from the terrorism for a long time. It is impossible for victims who are effected by the terrorism to live safely. Cruel terrorist group even attack female and children. The incidence of terrorism is increasing in the world. It is big problem in the world because countries worry about their citizen from the terrorism. The United States and other countries stuck to continue the war on terror. • 33. The War On Terror And Terrorism After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Bush administration declared a worldwide "war on terror," consisting of open and covert military operations and security legislations in an effort to block the financing of terrorism. The U.S. called for states across world to join their fight against terrorism (Globalpolicy.org, 2015). This essay will be arguing if the U.S. was justified in their advances or if they have used the attacks against them in order to launch a war against those it suspected, using the attacks as a justification for torture and mistreatment of people across the world. In a post 9–11 society, the question of security has become the first priority of governments and terrified Westerners, in particular, Americans as they struggle to reconcile with the possibility of conflicting ideals and lifestyles. The War on Terror has never truly been about the war against militants, but has rather been, similar to the Cold War in much more gruesome and misguided a way in which the Western countries, hereafter symbolized by the United States predominantly have found a new way to flex political muscle while oppressing other people across the globe through torture and destruction. The War on Terror is a poorly justified attack on human rights, a poor excuse for retaliation and progress, and is ultimately another way for the political culture of the West to permeate into other countries with their own lifestyles, international policies and simply be the one ... Four airplanes were hijacked, two were crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the third crashed into the Pentagon in D.C. and the fourth got stopped by a passenger. It was the first terrorist attack on the U.S. soil. Thousands of lives were lost that day. This attach was the most devastating act of belligerence on U.S territory since the Civil War (Terrorism, 2011). This even had an enormous influence on America and its history. It led to numerous short and long term effects. On September 20, 2001, former president George W. Bush announced publicly that he declares "War on Terror". Despite the fact that this is a simple way to detect if someone is carrying a bomb, any other type of explosives or anything else that could be dangerous boarding a plane. In the beginning of November 2010 TSA added new screening procedures. The new screening procedures were created because of the reactions of the "Underwear bomber". That person smuggled plastic explosives onto and airplane in December 2009. These procedures include the backscatter X– ray and the sliding pat–downs. The backscatter X–ray displays images of passenger's bodies. During sliding pat–downs officers screen passenger's breast, buttocks and genitals with the back of their hand. All pat–downs are done by a TSA officer of same gender of that passenger. And if requested the procedure can be done in a private room. On that date, four airplanes were hijacked by men from the terrorist group, al–Qaeda, and were used as weapons of an act of terrorism. In the span of about three hours, the four planes that've been hijacked crashed into New York City's World Trade Center, the Pentagon just outside of Washington DC, and onto a field in Pennsylvania. On this date, approximately three thousand americans were killed that morning. In effect, it has caused a "Global War on Terror". Rayman's article for Time magazine, "Guantanamo Bay Detainee Details 'Sadistic ' Abuse.", describes "a man detained in Guantanamo Bay for nearly 13 years has said he was subjected to 'dirty and sadistic' abuse at the prison..." • 49. The Global War on Terror Since the events of September 11, 2001, the American Public has been fascinated with what has become known as the "Global War on Terror." Public support of the War on Terror has fluctuated since the invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, with support significantly dropping as the wars continued. This waning support has caused many to question the effectiveness of the War on Terror in the Middle East. By examining research conducted both prior to and after the September 11 attacks and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, this paper demonstrates that overall participation in organized terror activities has increased overtime; therefore, the "War on Terror" has had minimal success in reducing the number of violent terror attacks and political violence groups in the Middle East. This paper will begin by defining terrorism and "War on Terror", as both terms are disputed by scholars. Afterwards, two other major points found in literature will be discussed– growth of organized terror organizations and impact that the War on Terror has had on these organizations. Next, the paper will discuss insurgency, which is another common type of political violence that occurs in the Middle East. Afterwards, the paper will discuss the shortcomings in the U.S. approach to counterinsurgency and two ways that the war on terror has failed to stop insurgency. The U.S. role in the War on Terror will then be analyzed through the use of drones in counterterrorism and the ways in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Cold War and the War on Terror Eerily, it seems that during the Cold War and the War on Terror, many of the feelings that citizens felt were the same, but what America called the enemy was different. Following the September 11th attacks, there was a feeling of paranoia felt throughout America similar to the paranoia felt during the Cold War. Americans did not feel safe, and an attack could come at any time. The fight on the home front looked different during the Cold War and the War on Terrorism. During the Cold War there was more of a correlation between fighting Communism, and buying consumer goods. During the War on Terror, consumerism was not stressed the way it was during the Cold War. What was stressed during the War on Terrorism was the idea that we had to return to the way America was before September 11th. If we could not do that, "The terrorists had won." The film Dr. Strangelove is very critical of the American government during the Cold War. The film features a commander named "Jack D. Ripper," who orders an attack on Communist Russia because he thinks they are secretly trying to add fluoride to the American water supply. Later in the movie, the President calls upon a former Nazi to help him figure out how to deal with the repercussions of Ripper's actions. Several times during the film, the former Nazi refers to the President as "Mein Fuher." It was no accident on Stanley Kubrick's part to have the President referred to as such. Kubrick successfully showed the similarities between dropping an atomic bomb and committing genocide. The graphic novel series Watchmen is also quite critical of America during the Cold War. • 65. The Cold War On Terror While this may be without shame, it is certainly not without peril. The glue that binds the conservative movement together is an external factor over which the conservatives themselves have no control. Conservatives have found a new adhesive in the current Global War on Terror (the "GWOT). Though the threat of terrorism shows no signs of abating any time soon, it could end in much the same way as the Cold War ended. 9/11 and the subsequent War on Terror have created a new conservative alignment that provides the framework for modern approaches to national security and foreign policy. In the absence of an existential external threat, conservatives must look for domestic antagonists, of which there are many. Abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, climate–focused environmental policy, gun control and stem cell research are equally promising targets. Though the presence of such common antagonists might strengthen the conservative coalition, they may prove to be fragile ground on which to build a new conservative solidarity. Rather than seeking common enemies, the Conservative movement must work on uniting itself from within. It should focus on narrowing the internal divisions and reconciling its disparate identities. If conservatism is to remain a prominent political force in the future, it is more likely to succeed by standing for something identifiable and compelling, rather than standing against anything that tends to liberalism. Since the 1970's the United States has tried to impose its will on other nations to combat the most pressing political enemy of the day often linking the war on drugs to the matter to stoke support both domestically and abroad. In the early 1980's there were two major cartels in Colombia named for the cities that they were headquartered in. The older cartel was the Cali cartel, an immense enterprise with subsidiaries in banking, real estate, and even an airline (Scott 94). Competing with the Cali cartel for market share was the Medellin cartel led by a man who would become synonymous with Colombian narco–terrorism, Pablo Escobar. The two cartels had vastly different styles with the Cali cartel preferring to view itself as more of a legitimate business with an executive structure that mirrors the organizational designs of many Fortune 500 companies complete with vice–presidents and divisions. Indeed, Colombian police began referring to the Cali cartel as "Los Caballeros" or "the gentlemen," giving rise to the great respect enjoyed by the cartel throughout Colombia. Contrastingly, the Colombia police called employees of the Medellin "Los Hampones" or "the hoodlums" (Chepesiuk 23). The United States' War on Terror following the attacks on 9/11 began with the invasion of Afghanistan and an attempt to to overthrow the Taliban government for harboring Osama bin Laden, the one responsible for the devastating attacks, led to devastating casualties of American and Taliban soldiers, as well as countless civilians. The United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom on October 7, 2001 and began a ground and air attack in Afghanistan. In the first year of the war, it is reported that between 1537 to 2490 civilians were killed in the air assault led by U.S. forces (Guilliard 66). The U.S. swiftly defeated the Taliban but failed to capture Bin Laden before he escaped to Pakistan. The Tragedy Of The War On Terror Throughout the history of our great country we have had very tragic incidents happen, and things we wish we could forget and discard them from our history just like other certain nations. One of the many tragic historical events are assassinations of important political figures and pop icons. Or other events like 9/11 and the Columbine school massacre which drastically affected the future of our country. On 9/11 we were thrusted into the war on terror, and for Columbine we had to make gun control for a nation that is so hell bent on the second amendment that it's still hard to get legislation through. As for assassinations, we look at people like Lincoln. This great man who did so much for this country yet had to die due to the outlook on slavery. Although when you really look at his death it was not as bad because the Civil War had already ended and we were on our way to reconstruct the South. But when you look at someone like JFK it is very drastic. At a time where tensions were rising with the threat of communism and the Civil Rights Movement and him being a young president who a lot of people resonated with, that it was such a huge hit on America at this influential point in time that made his death a tragedy. That attack made huge effects on U.S government and many other countries. Many innocent people lost their lives because of those terrorists. No one knows if an incident like the one on September 11 will happen again, but we have to know that "we are the primary target". According to Patrick Coaty's "War on Terror," the terrorism has been developed throughout history. So that people should know to fight the war on terror, and be prepared from another attack like the one on September 11, 2001. According to Coaty's War on Terror, terrorism can be divided in three different levels: individual, state, and international environment. During the French revolution, terrorism was developed the first time, and some groups of people gathered to clean the evils of monarchy. They want to overthrow the weak government and establish a new one that can bring them a better life. After that, terrorism was expanded to the Soviet, and it became the best tool for them to control people, including their lifestyle and their own privacy. Under the Soviet's control, terrorism has been developed and spread to many other countries around the world. Meanwhile, the Stalin's policies were applied to control German by Adolf Hitler. The terrifying events of 9/11 were like a blinding flash, benumbing the country with a sudden knowledge of unimagined dangers. Strong action was recommended, skeptics were silenced and a shallow sense of unity emerged from the shared vulnerabilities. Nearly three years later, the enormity of Bush's summons to open–ended "war" is more obvious. In much the same way, the worldwide network of supposed or potential allies of Osama bin Laden has been steadily expanded by government alerts since 9/11. These fanatical terrorists are not just in the Middle East; the same type has been spotted in East Asia and Africa, even South America. National security experts urge counterterrorism actions, just in case. Who can say the "intelligence" is wrong? How can citizens even weigh the "facts" when government keeps most of them secret? Its tactics are usually employed by weaker, irregular groups against governments that possess organized armies and the modern means for waging war formally and more destructively (both methods of violence may target and destroy the lives of innocents). Terror campaigns are cruel by nature but in some instances are regarded as righteous, when the violence is used to liberate oppressed peoples from colonial rule, as in Vietnam or Ireland, the creation of Israel or even the United States. The War On Terror : Terrorism Charles Reece Johnson Irons Discourse 200 November 5, 2014 The War on Terror Introduction The war on terror is not easy to define partly due to its vagueness and unsparing use of rhetorical device to justify any action of military perpetrated after the 9/11. However, the The war on terror, in its original intent, is a series of initiatives that seek to reduce or eliminate terrorism in the world. In this perspective, terrorism is the deliberate exploitation and creation of fear through threat and violence (Kugiel 16–17). This essay seeks to present an argument that the war on terror was not worth it. In order to justify whether the war on terror is worth it or not, it is vital to understand if the war on terror compels or deters terrorism. Deterrence refers to the threat of force perpetrated to prevent an adversary from engaging in any specific course of action. To compel in the same context refers to the threat of force perpetrated to motivate an adversary to undo an already done or to begin a specific course of action. Terrorism in its nature disrupts international security and peace via premeditated political violence. The terror act on the 11th of September on the Center of World Trade and the Pentagon greatly disrupted the global economy. • 109. The Global War on Terror A Middle Ground Essay about the Global War on Terror Introduction Over the last several years, the approach that is used in the War on Terror has been increasingly brought to the forefront. This is because there has been a shift in public opinion about the impact of specific events and the tactics to achieve a host of objectives. A good example of this can be seen with the use of special operations forces and the shooting spree of Robert Bales. He was an American soldier who was on his fourth tour in Afghanistan. One night after drinking heavily is when he snapped and went on a shooting spree (killing 16 civilians). This has an adverse impact on the US military's involvement in the region and the tactics they are using to achieve different objectives in the War of Terror. As a result, this is illustrating how a balanced approach must be taken over the long term. This will allow the nation to deal with the costs and resources of fighting this war more effectively. Over the long term, these kinds of techniques will make the US more efficient in going after terrorist organizations (by taking a middle of the road approach). ("Sergeant Robert Bales,") This is appropriate, in illustrating how the middle ground approach is necessary at this time. The reason why is: the military and other resources are being increasingly strained by this long commitment. • 113. War On Terror Dbq After the September 11 attacks, George W. Bush called for a war against Afghanistan in an effort to destroy terrorist organizations. In his statement on Military Order from 2001, Bush explains that if the United States did not use military action against these groups, then terrorists would continue to attack America or other countries and take even more lives (Bush). For Bush, war was the only answer in order to protect his country. Similarly, Vice President Richard Cheney advocated war in the Middle East. He remarked that the American government would target states that assisted terrorists or supported them, as well as individual terrorists. He also claimed that the war was effective as of 2003, and that the military had destroyed certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although some areas in Afghanistan and Iraq have improved and schools have been established, the United States has not done enough to help the people there. For example, the United States issued propaganda after the September 11 attacks that called for the liberation of women in Afghanistan. American citizens rallied in support of this movement and also supported the war because of it. Although some conditions have improved for women, the United States did not do as much as they said they would (Stabile). In addition, the opium trade has worsened in Afghanistan since the arrival of American troops; the country produces twice as much opium as it did in 2000 (Aikins). • 117. Is The War On Terror Ethical? Is the War on Terror ethical? Since the establishments of governments, since human societies had kings and queens, since governments were run under a religious doctrine, there has always been conflict between different groups of people. There will always be differences among people of different cultures, religions, race and ethnicity. There has always been a division of power between people and inequality in the world. There was a point in human history that slaves were bought and sold as property, as if life was insignificant and could be bought again. It was the norm between cultures to push away any new movement that threatened ideologies of their regime and it was necessary to maintain control of their people. It is difficult to imagine a world where people didn't have a voice, but there was a time in our history that these inequalities in government really mattered and defined you as a person. How did governments and regimes handle conflicts and upheavals? War. War was the first and last defense, it was not used as a noun but an action verb. It was the only thing that gave a sense of security and to an extent it was necessary, not so much because we were incapable of compromising, but simply because it was another established norm. War was the way to settle differences among governments it gave right to peace between people after a war. Flash forward to modern society war is not our only solution to problems. • 121. War On Terror Meaning The "War on Terror" is a term used to describe the military action taken by America and Canada after the events of September 11, 2001. This phrase is symbolic of the justification of acts that varied in legality and morality as a means to safe guard the security of the nation. These actions were perceived as necessary, top priority and essential but in actuality striped individuals of their rights, were unconstitutional and based not of factual information but racism and bigotry. The justifying of such intrusive acts in the name of protecting the nation is not a new phenomenon but can be dated back to the mid nineteen hundreds and is still used today. Canada prides itself as a multi–cultural, open and accepting nation. However, the presence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 125. Handling The War On Terror Handling the War on Terror The Global War on Terror, or War on Terror, with the United States at the helm, is the second most expensive war in American history, having surpassed $2 trillion. At the same time, little has been accomplished for domestic security or the destruction of terror groups. The United States needs a clear, focused strategy to suppress terrorist groups, while at the same time eliminating the causes for terrorism. I propose a gradual drawdown and closing of US bases and garrisons around the world. I also propose a serious global coalition to tackle ISIS, with a clear plan and exit strategy. At the same time, negotiating an agreement cannot be overlooked. The GWoT (Global War on Terror) is recognized as officially starting after the September 11 attacks. It is called "global" because it involves military actions, politics, and law against terror groups anywhere in the world. Current hostilities are being fought by NATO and ISAF countries with countless independent agreements. The main adversaries of this global coalition are al–Qaeda, al–Nursa, ISIS/ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), and Boko Haram. Despite the efforts of this anti–terror alliance, terror groups operate unhindered and terror attacks seem to be increasing. There are several key problems with the U.S. WoT strategy. The main one is the difficulty of detecting and fighting guerilla threats. Another key problem is the rules of engagement and collateral damage. The third and most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. War On Terror Essay The goal of the War on Terror defined by President Bush is "Our war on terror begins with Al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated". The problem with this goal is that it is unrealistic and that the definition of a terrorist varies with in countries. For example those who are labeled freedom fighters in one nation can be considered terrorists in another. People argue that there is no real enemy and that those who do a terrorist act should be handled through the Judicial System and not by the military. An example of this is the Boston bombings. Another problem with the War on Terror is that it has added about $1.7 trillion to $18 trillion onto the United States debt. It has also taken jobs away from the American people due to the fact that for every $1 billion given as a tax cut supplies a demand to create 10,779 jobs when $1 billion spent on defense creates 8,555 jobs. Meaning that for every billion we spend of defense takes away 2,224 jobs. Another thing is that due to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan people argue that President's Bush's true goal was to "strengthen the U.S. grip on the Middle East, turn Iraq into a military and political platform for further aggression, gain tighter control of international energy supplies, control and reshape the entire arc from North Africa to Central Asia, and strengthen the U.S. hand against rivals–current and ... • 133. The War On Terror ( Wot ) The War on Terror (WoT), also known as the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), refers to the international military campaign that started after the September 11 attacks on the United States.[47] U.S. President George W. Bush first used the term "War on Terror" on 20 September 2001.[47] The Bush administration and the western media have since used the term to argue a global military, political, legal, and conceptual struggle against both organizations designated terrorist and regimes accused of supporting them. It was originally used with a particular focus on countries associated with Islamic terrorism organizations including al–Qaeda and like–minded organizations. In 2013, President Barack Obama announced that the United States was no longer pursuing a War on Terror, as the military focus should be on specific enemies rather than a tactic. He stated, "We must define our effort not as a boundless 'Global War on Terror ', but rather as a series of persistent, targeted efforts to dismantle specific networks of violent extremists that threaten America."[48] The phrase "War on Terror" has been used to specifically refer to the ongoing military campaign led by the U.S., UK and their allies against organizations and regimes identified by them as terrorist, and excludes other independent counter–terrorist operations and campaigns such as those by Russia and India. The conflict has also been referred to by names other than the War on Terror. In 1984, the Reagan Administration used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 137. Understanding Of War On The Terror Hien Bui 12/1/15 Final Essay Political 180, Patrick Coaty Understanding of war on the terror The most tearful and saddest day is the September 11, 2011. And few years later passed by, those children who have become adults now think the world in a different scope compared to what it was years ago, and along with those changes created a new generation that brings out the different outlooks and opinions on how the world should react when facing ... • 145. Essay On War On Terror The War on Terror Within the history of the United States, there have been many enemies, foreign and domestic; among these combatants are terrorists led by radical Islam. These terrorists first major offensive against the United States began on September 11, 2001, a date many will remember for the rest of their lives. This attack has been a harbinger to the United States beginning a war on terror. This war on terror began as retribution for those lost in terror attacks, leading into aiding the population of war–torn countries, as well as displaying the force of the United States across the world. The United States began its war on terror by leading offenses against Al Qaeda, the group that attacked the United States on 9/11. The United States has been leading many attacks against the leaders of Al Qaeda to cut off the head of the snake so that the body would die. The Bin Laden raid was carried out by a navy seal ... This bomb has aided in the defeat of terrorism by destroying tunnel networks as well as defenses of ISIS in Afghanistan by forming a massive crater (Calamur, 2017). The United States is also leading to the defeat of terrorism by following its warning to Pakistan by pulling financial aid to the nation due to the housing of terrorists in its borders (Ward, 2017). • 149. Essay On War On Terror Introduction. The United States' War on Terror is a mistake because it is bringing more burdens and terrorism to the United States at home and abroad. While the October 11, 2001, U.S. invasion of Afghanistan is considered to be rightfully justified by 9/11, there is evidence to show that the January 17, 1991 Operation Desert Storm, which started the issues in the Middle East, was merely justified by the fear of a monopoly on the world's oil by the ruthless dictator Saddam Hussein. This event is essential to understanding the current War on Terror, given that it is the beginning of the US involvement in the Middle East. Therefore, understanding what occurred in 1990, is necessary to understanding the reasons behind the current War on Terror. On August 1, 1990, the Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, ordered an attack on Iraq's neighbor Kuwait, who had been a part of Iraq until 1961. Hussein stated that he was simply reuniting what should have never been divided. April Glaspie, U.S. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was another violation of the laws of war. This report shows how the CIA and the United States clearly failed to uphold the laws of war that are supposed to be upheld with the signing of the Geneva Convention. Because the United States signed the Geneva Convention, the ones responsible for the war crimes should have been tried at the International Criminal Court ("Punishment). But rather than those in the CIA that were responsible for these heinous acts being tried and convicted, no one was ever punished for these horrible acts. One could argue that they were just using these methods to get an upper hand on the terrorists that they were fighting that would have done the same thing to U.S. soldiers in a heartbeat, but by the United States doing these things to the terrorists that they capture, makes them just as bad as the terrorists that they are ... War on Terror Essay Since the days of the Cuban Missile Crisis (Marfleet, 1997) in the sixties, the United States has become increasingly more relaxed as to the possibility of an attack on American soil. Since the attack on the Twin Towers in September of 2001, by the terrorist group al–Qaeda, the United States has again become more aware and alert to this possibility. Not only did the attack on the United States bring Americans together as a country united, it also brought on changes that included the newly developed Department of Homeland Security. Homeland Security is now charged with not only protecting the country and territories from another terrorist attack but also responding to an attack, man–made accident, and natural disasters. Al–Awlaki has been linked to multiple attacks and attempted attacks on the United States. I would have to agree with our government in their assessment of the terroristic threat in reference to Al–Awlaki. Terrorism seems to be a Lernaean Hydra in comparison in that, when you remove one leader, two more replace them. Al–Qaida, while weakened by the loss of their leader, is still very much a threat. With almost endless finances, their ability to infiltrate and live among us is great. While I am sure the government makes every attempt to find and flag any person having ties to terrorist, how can you fight an enemy you cannot see? It is not as if they wear red or grey coats as they did in the Civil War. While doing the research paper one thing became increasing clear; I have no more idea as to the location and the means by which to attack, than the federal government does. I don't believe that the ability to hijack a commercial aircraft exists anymore. The attack on the Pentagon would most likely be a one–time event also. In some respects, as a nation, we are very good at learning from our mistakes. While the government has not told us of safety measures taken to protect such military targets, I am sure the measures have still been taken.
