This document summarizes a presentation about how publishing has been transformed by the open web platform. It discusses how 20 years ago, the web created new experiences for publishing like global distribution and low barriers to entry. However, early web design was limited. Recent trends like mobility, social media, and higher quality displays have further impacted publishing. The document argues that publishing is intrinsically tied to the web. Examples are provided of how ebooks are adopting web technologies and how the needs of publishers may not be fully addressed by current web evolution. The presenter discusses how W3C can help through cooperation with publishing organizations and a new interest group to ensure publisher needs inform web standards development.
