Eco-tourism management in Rajaji National Park, Uttarakhand (India)BASIX
Eco-tourism:Perhaps the most over-used and mis-used word in the travel industry. But what does it mean? The Ecotourism Society defines it as "responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of the local people". A walk through the rainforest is not eco-tourism unless that particular walk somehow benefits that environment and the people who live there. A rafting trip is only eco-tourism if it raises awareness and funds to help protect the watershed. A loose interpretation of this definition allows many companies to promote themselves as something that they are not. If true eco-tourism is important to you, ask plenty of questions to determine if your trip will help "conserve and improve" the places you visit.

The importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage in combating the negative consequences of Globalisation.
“The bulk of the world’s current problems stem from a detachment from traditional cultures. This culture, knowledge and experience must be protected at all costs. It is the only hope for sustainability of cultural identity while allowing modern development.” UNESCO 2009
We share cultural expressions that have been passed from one generation to another. Safeguarding living heritage is vital to sustaining a community’s innate creativity and sense of identity.
An understanding of the intangible cultural heritage of different communities helps with intercultural dialogue, and encourages mutual respect for other ways of life. The importance of intangible cultural heritage is not the cultural manifestation itself but rather the wealth of knowledge and skills that is transmitted through it from one generation to the next.
The global wealth of traditions has become one of the principal motivations for travel, with tourists seeking to engage with new cultures and experience the global variety of performing arts, handicrafts, rituals, cuisines and interpretations of nature and the universe.
Fostering the responsible use of this living heritage for tourism purposes can provide new employment opportunities, help alleviate poverty, curb rural flight migration among the young and marginally employed, and nurture a sense of pride among communities.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Project Needs:
Growing population and increasing demand for food has led to industrial farming practices,
which are detrimental to both the environment and to our health. Sustainable farming is the
way forward as it takes into consideration of our health, the environment, local communities
and animal welfare. It produces food in a way that allows for ecological balance and
maintenance of biodiversity. Plants, animals and humans are all part of nature and we rely on
each other to survive. Climate change, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, depletion of
resources and extinction of species are devastating results of our exploitation of nature.
Rethinking our role in nature and our footprint on this planet is key to the survival of future
generations.
Project Aims:
Provide a unique experiential learning opportunity to enrich knowledge of sustainable
farming and animal care
4. 4
Increase awareness of the negative impact of industrial farming on our health and on
the environment
Encourage volunteers to engage with nature, physically, mentally and spiritually

Project 3: Fujian Tulou - World Heritage
Preservation and Revitalization
Code: DWC-02-19
Project Type: World Heritage; Culture
Project Dates: July 26th
to Aug 6th
, 2019
Number of Participants: 2 leaders and 12
workcampers
Location: Da Ling Xia Village, Yongding, Longyan,
Fujian Province
Closest Airport: Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN)
Participation Fee: 1,200 RMB (~160 EURO)
Project Needs:
Fujian Tulous (土楼) are unique Chinese rural dwellings built between the 12th
and 20th
centuries
by the mountainous Hakka people living in Fujian. In China, the Chinese traditional concept
called “Feng-Shui” focuses on the relationship between human being and nature. Therefore, the
Tulous were built with great consideration of the harmony with and respect for their
surrounding nature in a very sustainable and energy efficient way, using local materials. They
are interdependent with the mountains and rivers and form an ecological connection with
nature over time. However, with globalization and the expansion of cities today, the
environment is sometime ignored and new structures are being built around the Tulous.
Moreover, a Tulou is usually inhabited by one family clan of several generations, and the
enclosed structure allows for members to work together defending each other. Individual rooms
provide privacy, but there are also communal areas, which provides for cultural gatherings and
communication. Nowadays, the community dependence is weakening with young inhabitants
moving out to the cities for work or for school. Emphasis on private property is growing and
villagers prefer living in larger and more modern buildings.
Project Aims:
Preserve, protect, and promote Tulou (background, history, culture, architect)
Enhance international exchange and promote sustainable tourism and development of
the Tulou
Inspire future changemakers who are impactful towards world heritage preservation
and sustainable tourism and/or building structures
Meals and Accommodation:
Workcampers will be staying in an old village school dormitory with simple beddings.
Workcampers who are not used to hard mattresses may bring their own sleeping bag. A cooking
and cleaning schedule will be arranged at the beginning of the workcamp, and workcampers will
take turns with cooking and cleaning chores. There will be a day where volunteers may cook and
share their own country’s food.
6. 6
Work/Activities:
Learn about Tulou (how they are constructed, their history, the local situation and
challenges, etc.)
Marketing/promotional activities such as creating tools to promote/share/raise
awareness about Tulous
Share the World/Cultural Heritage of your country with the local people
Interact with local villagers through cultural activities
Participate in discussion on changemaking stories or ideas on world heritage
preservation, conservation, and sustainable building structures whether they are from
your country or from others
Local Partner Description:
Zinong, a sharing platform of natural and cultural living, enables participants to experience the
culture, food and handicraft in different regions. Their main destinations are rural villages.
Through deep excavation of village’s culture, history, handicraft and nature elements, Zinong
combines education with tourism to develop various in-depth experiential learning
programmes.
Zinong’s visión is guide the city to know the village again; Help the villagers build the village
together Zinong’s misión is discover, share, and build together the beautiful village together
Remark:

sharing good practices on eco-friendly lifestyles. The village hopes to provide a relaxing and open
environment for the sharing of resources and ideas, and for people to cooperate together in
unity. Therefore, trainings and workshops are periodically organized in the village for social
workers and staffs of different NGOs.
Since the start of the Huakailing Public Welfare Village in March 2018, the construction of
infrastructures such as kitchens, restaurants, offices, libraries, tea lounges, and dormitories has
been completed. With the help of local volunteers, Huakailing now has a vegetable garden, an
earth oven, and a beautiful lawn for resting for workshop participants. In order to provide all
visitors a sustainable, natural, and comfortable experience that facilitates the exchange of
knowledge, Huakailing hopes to construct more infrastructure, which includes the building of
eco-friendly earth houses and terraces in the village together with volunteers. The earth houses
will be for future activities with families and volunteers. Terraces will be for farming purposes,
which will provide food to future volunteers, local staffs, and visitors.
