There are around 1,510 active volcanoes in the world, with 80 or more located under the oceans. Magma is liquid rock inside a volcano, while lava is magma that has flowed out of a volcano. Volcanoes erupt when rock inside the Earth becomes hot enough to melt due to its low density, causing magma to rise to the Earth's surface. Most volcanoes initially form under water on the seafloor and gradually grow taller with each eruption.
