Vodafone and Idea Cellular announced a merger that will create India's largest telecom operator with over 400 million subscribers. It is a horizontal merger between two competitors in the same industry. The merger aims to improve infrastructure, provide superior services, lower tariffs through economies of scale and increased competition. It is estimated the merger synergies could unlock cost savings of Rs. 14,000 crore annually by consolidating networks, rental costs, IT and back-end operations.
