V. O. Chidambaram Pillai was a Tamil lawyer and Indian independence activist born in 1872 who started an indigenous shipping company to defy British rule in India. He was convicted of sedition for this act and sentenced to life in prison, where he endured torture and harsh treatment. Fellow activists like Bharathiyar and people who raised money helped support him during his imprisonment, where he lost his health and wealth challenging the British Raj.
