2. SINALING
It is a medium to convey a particular pre-
determined meaning in non-verbal form.
Various methods are used to convey the
meaning by "Signals" in a non-verbal form as are
used by Scouts, Policemen, road signs, Navy and
Air Traffic Control etc., which convey definite
information.

3. NEED OF RAILWAY SIGNALING
Railway is the fastest transportation medium
on earth but its tracks can’t be uttered at the
instant of time.
In railway breaks can’t be applied at the
instant of time.
There are limited tracks and trains can be
carried only on railway tracks not on earth like
other vehicles.

5. COLOUR LIGHT SIGNAL-: A
fixed signal in which the
indications are given by
the colour of a light only.
SEMAPHORE SIGNAL-: A
signal in which the day
indications are given by the
position of a semaphore
arm.

6. INTERLOCKING
Interlocking means an arrangement of signals,
points and other appliances, operated from a
panel or lever frame, so interconnected by
mechanical locking or electrical locking or both
that their operation must take place in proper
sequence to ensure safety.

7. HISTORY OF THE RAILWAY SIGNALING
Although signalling was introduced to American
railroads as early as 1857, no extensive installations
were made until after the year 1900. Railroad
management recognized the value of signalling in
expediting traffic.
Mechanical interlocking was first installed in England,
in 1843, at Bricklayer's Arms Junction.
The technology of railway signalling started with
purely mechanical control of signalling gadgets.
GRS invented Absolute Permissive Block (APB)
signalling, making the first installation on the
Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway in 1911.Yashveer Singh

8. its sophistication is achieved through introduction of
electrical controls in the existing system gradually.
Thus we have electro mechanical signalling
installations where mechanical point control and
interlocking frames coexist with electrical signal
controls, block working and other allied practices.
Gradually dependence on mechanical controls got
reduced as electric point machines, electro-
magnetic relays and electric locks replaced the old
mechanical gears.
Thus the systems progressed towards sophistication.
In further developments, electronic and
microprocessor based controls are being introduced
to take over from the conventional relay controls.

9. MICROLOCK ll BASED RAILWAY SIGNALLING
The Microlock II system
operation is controlled by
proprietary executive software
running on the system hardware.
The user application logic is
written in a proprietary
Microlock II programming
language and is compiled by a
proprietary complier into a set of
data tables which are interpreted
by the executive software during
run-time.

10. CONCEPT OF HOT STANDBY
Any Signal Interlocking System needs to be
uninterrupted as it deals with Safety.
Train detentions shall be minimal.
MLK II being an Electronic System, it is mandatory to
duplicate entire system.
All the Vital and Non-vital boards, CPU, Power Supply
PCB, VCOR are in duplicate.
Duplicated MLK II systems are identified as “SYSTEM-
A” and “SYSTEM-B”.
When one system fails due to any reason, it is
ensured that other system is available to take care of
Station Interlocking. Yashveer Singh

11. CENTERLISED TRAFIC CONTROLL
This is state of the art solutions to Train Control
system requirements for both Transit and Mainline
Rail Systems. The design is based upon network
distributed architecture and applies industry
standard approaches in both hardware and software.
This open architecture results in systems that are
flexible, modular and cost-effective. The products
apply Train Control application software design
concepts that have been proven for over 40 years
and feature Redundancy, Automatic Failover and
High System Availability.
First CTC is being developed by Ansaldo-STS in India.

12. AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROLL(ATC)
It is the driverless control of train which works based
on the many sensors like RF detection, self decision
making, and also may use ATS (Automatic train stop)
technology.
Delhi Metro (DMRC) is thinking of applying this
technic in their coming projects.
