Jodie Martin is an Australian linguist and PhD candidate based in Adelaide, specializing in systemic functional linguistics and jazz performance writing. She has a background in French and Spanish, and her research focuses on the representation, evaluation, and legitimation of jazz through various semiotic resources. Throughout her academic career, she has produced several publications and developed skills in office management and effective communication.

- 9. So when theopportunity arose in 2009 to study a Masters degree by research in Linguistics, then upgrade to a PhD in 2010, I took it. Inspired by my jazz musician brother, I researched the academic writing of honours students of jazz performance. In December 2012 I submitted my thesis:

EDUCATION Doctor of Philosophyin Linguistics 2012 Title: On notes and knowers: the representation, evaluation and legitimation of jazz Supervisors: Dr Peter Mickan; Dr Jennifer Rosevear Key methodological frameworks: Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Appraisal Theory, Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA), Legitimation Code Theory (Semantics and Specialisation) Summary: This thesis investigates how jazz performance students at a conservatorium write about music. The research identifies the multisemiotic representation of jazz through the incorporation of music notation. It investigates the evaluation of jazz through the use of attitudinal language to position musicians as worthy of research. It also investigates the legitimisation of jazz through the specialisation of musicians and musical knowers.
