This document discusses visual literacy and multiliteracies. Visual literacy is defined as the ability to interpret, use, appreciate and create visual images and video using conventional and 21st century media. A complete literacy program should include opportunities to draw information as well as write it. To reflect the range of literacies, classroom instruction needs to explicitly teach how different text types work. Suggested strategies to broaden literacy teaching include developing visual literacy skills through drawing, utilizing online collaborative tools, and incorporating discussion into lessons.
