Facebook Nearby allows users to check-in and share their current location on Facebook using GPS. This utilizes the existing large Facebook audience to provide user-generated listings of places and attractions around a user's location. The system displays popular places using categories, regions, and maps to make it easy for users to discover new spots and see what their friends recommend nearby.

Social Media is one of the most effective communication and advertising channels. But
cutting through the noise can be challenging, and often, marketers must use paid social
marketing strategies to amplify their message in social platforms.
Even though you might have created a really insightful piece of content, it can be hard to
reach the right audience, especially in the beginning, where no one knows you or your
brand. You can use social ads to boost your existing content, for example your Facebook
posts or your blog.
Highly targeted ads on social media can help you reach exactly the people who care
about your content. The ability to target potential readers and customers based on
demographic data, behaviors, and very specific interests is the biggest strength of social
media ads.
But social ads are not limited to promoting content; they are also a great way to advertise
products, drive traffic to your website or online shop, or collect contact information for
your email campaigns.
In this guide, you learn what is possible in several leading platforms and learn how to
evaluate which platform is right for your message and your audience. On the next pages
we cover six major social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest,
Snapchat, and LinkedIn. Each of these sites has more than 100 million monthly active
users.
This guide is a short excerpt from the Udacity Digital Marketing Nanodegree program – a
comprehensive and highly interactive course that teaches you all you need to know to
become a Digital Marketer.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
2. Overview – Why Facebook Nearby?
Facebook ‘Nearby’ Places utilises the mobile Facebook
application to share your current location with your contacts.
Using GPS Facebook is able to locate ‘Place’ listings that are
surrounding your current location. By selecting a location you can
quickly make others aware of your current travels or activities.
For example someone may ‘Check In’ to the Millennium Stadium
when at a Rugby match to share with their contacts.
Alternative systems include foursquare and GoWalla (recently
acquired by Facebook) were a possibility but do not have the
mass audience that Facebook and the existing Visit Wales
Facebook Page provides.
The main reason for using Facebook Places over alternative
systems is to offer user generated content listings to our existing
215,000+ Facebook audience.
3. Key Elements
My Favourite Places
Categories / Regions
Categories Listing
Google Map
Places display
See More Places
Add My Place
4. My Favourite Places
A PR opportunity to feature a celebrity or individual and
their top 5 places.
The images at the top work in a concertina effect to
display a brief description of the place when clicked.
The map displays the 5 places via numbered pins.
The listing are then displayed by priority (not total check
in) along with their associated number of Facebook Check
In’s and links to further information.
We have the ability to update this as often as required.
5. Top Places by Categories
By default upon loading, the user is
presented with the ‘Most Popular’
listing, this ranks all registered listings
by their associated number of
Facebook Check In’s.
We have the ability to add and remove
categories to the system, maximum 12.
Each Facebook Place can exist across
multiple categories.
Eg. Millennium Stadium may appear in
both ‘Landmarks’ and ‘Venues’.
6. Top Places by Region
To provide visitors with local user
generated content around their holiday
we have the regional view.
Split by the marketing areas, we are
able to view all Facebook Places listed
in each area ranked by number of
Check In’s.
7. Places Listing
Each listing has the following elements:
• Title – As listed on Facebook
• Link – To drive traffic to their
Facebook page.
• Check-Ins – Number of user
generated visitors
• Like – How many people have clicked
the ‘Like’ button for this listing/page
• Rank – Within this category/region
More places navigation displays the
next 10 Facebook Places for that
category/region.
Add ‘your listing’ links to a form for
tourism industry to add their Facebook
Place for inclusion.
8. Supporting Map
Each page has a supporting Google
Map.
The pins (1-10) represent the current
viewable listings.
Clicking the pins will display the
statistics for that Facebook Place.
