The document discusses the roles and responsibilities of librarians. It explains that librarians manage media center programs, facilities, personnel, access to information, budgets, and library services. This includes strategic planning for programs, organizing events, ensuring patrons have access to resources while respecting privacy laws, writing proposals to obtain funding, and assisting teachers and students. Good librarians require strong people, computer, organization, and IT skills to effectively help patrons with research, learning, entertainment, collaboration, and relaxation.
2. Why visit?
The library is a place to….
• Research
• Learn
• Get Entertained
• Collaborate
• Relax
2
3. Librarians do what?
Here’s a list of responsibilities:
• Manage Media Center Program
• Manage Facility
• Manage Personnel
• Manage Access to Information
• Manage the Library Budget
• Manage Library Services
For librarians to keep a
running library they must do a
series of things for the library
and their patrons.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 73-177) 3
4. Manage Media Center Program
• Once a media advisory committee is formed
then can the strategic planning begin. This is
the guiding area to start the library’s
programs. Programs need policy statements,
assessment needs, and objectives.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 74-78) 4
5. Cont. Media Center Program
While all is done the organizing factor starts.
Followed by planning process with the help of flow
charts for extended projects. This ties in with the
media center’s scheduling to make electronic
calendars and daily planning for activities to be
enjoyed by the patrons.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 80-90) 5
Lastly, librarians must take the time to calculate
time spent doing certain activities.
6. Manage Facility
• Librarians must take into account the amount of
visitors study on tables, use computers, and walk
through aisles. This is all in order to make
arrangements within the facility to have
appropriate space used. This can lead to possible
needed remodeling or moving facility.

8. Manage Personnel
• Librarians work with so many different staff
especially when a school is in the picture.
Librarians work with teachers on their lesson
planning, helping administrators with resources,
and also taking the role of working with parents
and volunteers. Though to start a librarian is
first a teacher to all their staff.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 109-123) 8
9. Manage Access to Information
• Librarians must work with laws as well to let
students and teachers have their right of privacy.
While also helping with copyright reviewing for
the material/sources in the system. Not only is
their patrons rights part of information but also
having new options in the library catalog and
keeping it up to date.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 125-143) 9
10. Manage the Library Budget
• Biggest part of any type of service for
school or public is the management of
budget. Librarians have their work cut out
with having to write proposals to obtain the
needs of the library. Mainly for funds on
books, technology advances, and possible
event/activities for the library.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 145-144) 10
11. Manage Library’s Services
• Librarians have to assist on learning curriculums,
classroom assignments, in-training programs, and
analyze different teacher methods. This helps a school
as a whole to have space for presentations, sharing of
resources, and much more.
(Woolls, 2008, p. 161-177) 11
12. What skills make the best librarian?
Skills List:
• People Skills
• IT Skills
• Computer Skills
• Organization Skills
Skills are honed within time and
much practice. Librarians need
these to help patrons at their
outmost potential.
(American Library Association, 2017, para. 3) 12
13. Skills + Librarians=?
• With the set of skills librarians are able to become
motivational for students and teachers. When patrons
are aware that librarians can honestly help, they too
get the excitement to use the library. Sometimes both
parties can learn together.
– When thinking about not having any guidance on how to use the library’s
technologies or new website additions helps understand how much a
librarian is important.
