- 1.(Welcome individuals as they join)Everyone knows me here as Angela Rupert, the student on the left. During the presentation, I will be using my virtual world avatar on the right.I’ll be introducing you to Virtual Worlds as an Educational Tool.

Today’s plan is presenting an overview of virtual worlds and exploring them as educational tools.Virtual world technology provides a wide range of capabilities to structure e-learning in engaging ways. Virtual worlds are digital cyberspaces that present perceptual stimuli simultaneously to multi-players. As a graphic Avatar, the user and can manipulate experiences similar to reality or as a hybrid fantasy. Communication between users is typically real time text or voice commands. - 4.HistoryTwenty years ago, using a virtual world as an educational tool was considered a sci-fi fantasy. One of the first virtual worlds to come out in the late 70’s was called game called MUD (Multi-User Dungeon).
- 5. The real life practical applications of virtual worlds are endless. Many are familiar with virtual worlds as educational games for children or war games for the military, however, they are now being used to streamline information in ways we could never have imagined 30 years ago. Airports are ableto land planes in real time using 3d virtual technology. Architecture can build scale models.Science can take a fresh look at the human body.Mechanics can troubleshoot engine failure.NASA will soon even be able to take us on a virtual flight to Mars.

- 7. Leading Tools and other Widgets (click)Second life is one of the biggest virtual world brand names on the market. Some, are free to join and explore, however most of the designing activities are limited unless you pay for additional membership privileges. - 8. Virtual worlds are being combined with other widgets to make them even more interesting. Some consider virtual worlds as THE new, upcoming social networking tool and there are plenty of widgets jumping on the bandwagon. OK, get ready to vote. Here are some short Youtube clips of virtual world widget technology. (Click ) You are going to decide which of the following three you want to see the most:1. Using second life as a twitter fountain virtual screen saver.2. Iphone with virtual interactive game/art.3. Or as a browser in a virtual world. Some features are still in the process of being developed as we speak. New technology hybrid combinations are coming out everyday and the possibilities are endless.(click) Lets take a poll, which of the three would you like to watch?
- 9. Virtual Worlds for learning as an educational tool is an innovative use of experiential technology. (click)In second world, for example, an avatar is teleported into an educational hub on a virtual island. Educators pay a usage or rental fee to set up their virtual world learning environment. Chat and voice allows learners to communicate and interact.Audio and video are streamed in to provide additional training.

Virtual worlds support synchronous communication, sharing, and collaboration among multi-users for creating and publishingvirtual learning across the internet.Now we are seeing learners from universities, k-12 schools, conferences and corporations sitting side by side in a virtual classroom, even though in reality, they are halfway across the earth!Let’s see, what’s this guy over here smiling about (click). - 11.Children’s virtual worlds are very popular right now. My kids are into Webkinz world where you can buy a stuffed animal with a virtual code to play with your animal as an avatar. - 12. Designing Digitally is a digital company that worked with a group of high school students in Cincinnati, OH.The students had built a science lab in Second Life, performing virtual biology experiments for class.
- 13. The corporate world is very excited about embracing virtual simulation training. Decision skills are simulated by navigating challenges.Learners gaininsight about improving situational awareness and the roles of others. - 14. 3D graphics make a huge difference teaching medical simulations. Hospitals may use virtual worlds for training staff before releasing them with real patients. Imagine viewing the flat images of an MRI in 3D. Can you imagine how much easier it would be to make a diagnosis? - 15. Learning technology implications for virtual world design are staggering. Most instructional designers need programs where they can easily focus on creating learning activities. Educators should consider virtual world templates that easily organize interactions with varyingspeed and difficulty levels.Some virtual worlds offer 24 hour technical support and collaborative educational wikis such as Active Worlds Educational Universe which advertises a free browser and discounted pricing for educators.
- 16. Where to host your educational medium is the first consideration.Archvirtual.com offers to host a 4000 square meter project space for architecture designing in second world for about $25 a month rent or $19 a month in Visibuild, a competitor. An architecture island rental runs about $400 a monthVirtual technology has dropped in price over the last few years. Still, easy to use templates and custom formatting is available for the right price. Open source virtual world authoring tools typically require strong technology skills. (click)Daden, based out of the UK, is a host for a new open source virtual authoring tool called Pivote and it is free to educators.(click)Rezed.org and tandem-learning.com are excellent resources for virtual training templates and authoring tools. Rezed is geared for learners to link a wide variety of virtual world learning sources and Tandem learning is geared more toward the HR training side.

- 18. Right now educators and even human resource trainers are bringing learners into the classroom. (click)Linked in also has several virtual world networking clubs such as the Association of Virtual Worlds that are easy to join with members eager to direct new learners with ideas for support.Open sourcetoolkits such as opensimulator.org and realxtend.orgare creating more affordable virtual worlds and delivering education right into the personal computer. The current state of virtual world technologies provides a vision for the future of learning.
- 19. In conclusion, virtual worlds are another resource for the instructional designer or educator that seeks to incorporate a blend of technologies into interactive learning.
