Kurt Vonnegut was an American author born in Indianapolis in 1922 who experienced hardship during the Great Depression. He served in World War II and was captured and imprisoned in Dresden, Germany where he survived the Allied firebombing of the city in 1945. After the war, he married his high school sweetheart Jane Marie Cox and went on to write several acclaimed novels that drew from his wartime experiences including Slaughterhouse-Five.
