Michael P. Anderson was born on December 25, 1959, in Plattsburgh, New York, and became an astronaut at age 31 after earning degrees in physics and astronomy. He graduated from Cheney High School in 1977, later receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and a master’s from Creighton University. Anderson's only space mission was with the Columbia, after which he buried the Arlington.
