Vine is a 6-second video sharing app owned by Twitter that allows users to create short video loops. It was created in 2012 and acquired by Twitter later that year. The name Vine refers to short video snippets called vignettes. Users can browse videos organized by category, follow other Vine users, and share videos to Twitter and Facebook. While videos cannot be edited or imported, Vine recently added a private messaging feature between users.

Vine is a software owned by Twitter.
It is a video-sharing application.
The video can only be six-seconds long.
It is a free downloadable application.
Vine can be accessed with iOS, Android
Devices and Windows Devices.
Videos can be categorized into different
channels, these are: Animals, Art, Comedy,
DIY, Family, Food, Music & Dance, News,
Places, Science & Technology, Sports or
Style.

Developed in June 2012 by Dom
Hofmann and Rus Yusupov.
In October 2012 Twitter bought the
company and introduced it in January
2013 (Know your meme).

4. Behind the Name
Vine is a shorter version of the word
‘Vignette’. Vignette meaning, “a short
scene in a movie or play” (Merriam-
Webster).

5. Limitations of Vine
Vine does not allow for editing.
It does not allow for uploading of
imported videos, meaning that you cannot
upload videos that are pre-recorded or
downloaded from somewhere else.
Only the person who uploads a video has
the privileges to share the link of that
video (Hern 2013).

Step 1: Download App from iTunes on
your iPhone or from Google Play Store
from your Android device. It can also be
accessed at www.vine.co
Step 2: Create an account using either an
already existing Twitter account or with an
E-mail account.

Select the 'Home' screen by clicking the image in the
upper left corner of the screen and selecting 'Home‘.
Then click on the video camera icon in the top right
corner of the screen, it then becomes the video
camera. Record something you would like to upload
by holding your finger on the record button on the
screen for a couple of seconds. This step can be
repeated until the 6 seconds are up.
Once the video is created it can be shared, a
description for the video can also be added along with
location where it was recorded and choosing a
specific channel to share the video in.
The Vine video can also be shared in Twitter and
Facebook.

By pressing the house icon in the upper left corner of
the screen allows for a drop down menu to appear to
click your own profile. On your profile click on the
icon that looks like two people in the upper right
corner of the screen and you will then have the option
to find Vine’ers. You can add Vine’ers using an
address book or Twitter, or by clicking the magnifying
glass to search manually.
By adding other Vine’ers you can scroll down on your
own home page to see the videos of the people you
are following.
To view other videos you can click on the “Explore”
button and view videos from different channels.

New feature of Vine is ‘Messages’.
Vine’ers can send private messages to
each other.
