#10 Unabomber
#10  Dr. Theodore Kaczynski aka the Unabomber, People were scared to open their own mail, it caused a mass fear of the public even though only he only killed 3 people his reign lasted for 20 years.  He was finally captured on Wednesday April 3rd, 1996 in his remote cabin outside Lincoln, Montana.  The Unabomber has gained the spot for #10 on our list because he was a notorious killer, struck fear in the heart of Americans for many years, and was on the FBI’s most wanted list.
#9! Afghanistan invasion
#9 The invasion in Afghanistan was in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  It evolved to a struggle against Al-Qaeda and its Taliban.  On June 7,2010 was the 104 th  month of U.S. involvement which marked the longest war in U.S. history. Afghanistan has affected countries and millions of people because there are some people that do not believe in war or invasion, people have died for what some believe is un-needed. The invasion has impacted us and is still impacting us and that’s why it is the #9 on our list.
#8 Osama is elected
#8 Barack Obama is the 44 th  president of the United States.  He was inaugurated on January 20, 2009.  He was elected over Hillary Clinton to win his party’s nomination.  He won the presidential election over the republican nominee John McCain.  Obama is the first president to be elected into office that is an African-American. He has many doubters and non-believers but the nation hopes he will thrive as the first African-American president.
#7 VT/ Columbine school massacres
#7 Columbine- Tuesday April 20 th  1999 and Virginia tech-Monday April 16 th  2007, were mass school shootings. They killed many students and changed how schools go about bullying. After these shootings there have been many others. It has made everyone more aware of what is going on with teens.  It has affected the way everything is done, so they can try and prevent the pain and suffering that many families and friends had to go through, will never have to again.

#6 The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is an ongoing oil spill in the gulf of Mexico.  It is among the largest oil spills in the world and now the largest in the United States.  It spews out 20,000 to 40,000 barrels of oil a day.  The oil spill caused massive amounts of controversies that surrounds the incident. It has harmed the environment and is one of the biggest oil spills in history.
#5 Earthquakes
#5 The Haiti earthquake was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.  It was west of Port-au-Prince it had a depth of 8.1 miles.  It had at least 33 aftershocks.  At least 217,000 people were identified as dead.  It has left a million people homeless. There was an earthquake in China, it was a 7.9 magnitude and 68,000 were pronounced dead.  It left many people homeless and starving. Families had lost family members and were in a state of survival after the earthquakes. They were natural disasters and crushed the souls of many people. The images of the destruction will always be imprinted in the memories of thousands.

#4 The Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake. It happened on December 26, 2004 west of Sumatra, Indonesia.  The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.1 (second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph) and killing over 230,000 people.  The entire plant had vibrated as much as 1 cm, and triggered many earthquakes, and a wide spread humanitarian response.
#3 Katrina
#3 Hurricane Katrina formed in the in the Bahamas. It crossed Florida as a category one hurricane and caused some deaths and flooding.  It strengthened rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico and weakened before hitting land the second time at Louisiana. 80% of New Orleans became flooded.  Katrina was a horrible hurricane that destroyed homes and left thousands homeless. Areas effected by Katrina are still trying to get back to where they were. Katrina is by far the worst hurricane in our lifetime, and the effects will still be felt years from now.

#2 9/11 was a terrorist attack on  the United States.  They took control of planes and flew them into the twin towers.  9/11 ruined the lives of many people. The U.S.A has been altered since then. We have had major security enhancements, and the U.S.A has cut down dramatically on other attacks.

#1 The Rwandan Genocide was the 1994 killing of around 800,000.  It took about 100 days after the assassination of Juvenal Habyarimana on April 6.  A rebel group of Tutsi refugees killed him. The Hutu saw this as a rebellion that they must deny. They did this by killing 20% of the population. The genocide was a mass killing of people, Rwanda has stood still in time as one of the worst genocides in history, it was a Nazi like action. It’s something that will always be remembered as a action that has changed the course of history.
