It is run by volunteers and Jean-Baptiste Kempf from Ecole Centrale Paris. VideoLAN has a non-profit association and business unit called VideoLabs that employs around 20 people to work on commercial partnerships and new platforms like Android TV and Tizen. As a reminder, Petals ESB is an Enterprise Service Bus created in 2005 and hosted by OW2. Thanks to a service approach and the SOA paradigm, Petals aims at reducing the coupling between applications. Beyond the usual integration use case, Petals can be seen as a backbone infrastructure in information systems. This allows applications to focus on their business and reduces the complexity of informations systems thanks to a better modularization. One of the most notable aspect of Petals ESB is that it is distributed (several physical servers make a single virtual one). This alternative approach to clusters gives a lot of flexibility and allows several architecture solutions (geographical distribution, high availability, load balancing...).

AXES (http://axes-project.eu) was a project co-funded by the European Union’s Seventh Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. The goal of AXES was to develop tools that provide various types of users with new engaging ways to interact with audiovisual libraries, helping them to discover, browse, search and enrich video archives. The OW2 WebLab (http://weblab-project.org) integration platform for multimedia processing has been used to aggregate the services developed by 9 partners in order to build the three demonstrators targeting various user groups: the media professionals, the journalists and researchers as well as the home users. As a result of the AXES project, OW2 "Open AXES", is born. It provides a complete solution that gathers innovative audiovisual content analysis technologies (shot and keyframes detection, image classification, speech transcription, large scale indexing, similarity search, etc.) as well as an ergonomic interface to retrieve and navigate in video archives.

The constant growth of cybercrime requires that nations are organizing to unite their defense and protection. In the area of cyber-detection federation requires standardizing in two fields: - Communications between the various tools and security solutions in order to consolidate and correlate information simply, we will call this communication “intra” Security Centers. - Communications between different Security Centers Teams to share information on incidents, we will call this communications “inter” Security Centers (between CSIRT). Both recognized standards at IETF in this field are: - IDMEF (Intrusion Detection Message Exchange Format) – RFC 4765 - IODEF (Incident Object Description Exchange Format) – RFC 5070 These two standards are still relatively new and insufficiently deployed on a market still dominated by proprietary formats. Prelude is a SIEM (Security Information & Event Management). This is a security control tool that fully use IDMEF. Prelude collects and centralizes the company security information of to provide a central point of steering. Thanks to the analysis and correlation of logs, Prelude alerts in real time of intrusion attempts and threats on the network. Prelude offers several tools of investigation and reporting on your big data to identify the weak signals which may prefigure of advanced persistent threats (APT). Finally, Prelude has all the tools to help the operation to simplify operators’ work and risk management.

Prendre en compte l’accessibilité dans ses développements informatiques, c’est concevoir des outils et contenus incluant les êtres humains dans leur diversité. C’est un défi important à relever : le défi d’une société qui tient à l’inclusion de toutes et tous. Mais c’est aussi un enjeu économique ainsi qu’une contrainte légale, renforcée en France par la loi pour une République numérique. Prendre l’accessibilité en compte exige un peu d’organisation. Les logiciels libres et open source montrent déjà la voie dans plusieurs domaines informatiques, ils pourraient devenir exemplaires également en termes d’accessibilité numérique.

VLC runs on most platforms and is developed by volunteers. This talk will explain how we ported VLC to Android using the NDK, the issues we faced and how we solved most of them. It will also detail the future of VLC on the Android platform. Speaker : Jean-Baptiste Kempf, VideoLan Jean-Baptiste Kempf is the president of the VideoLAN non-profit organization and one of the main developers of VLC. Jean-Baptiste led some of the ports of VLC on mobile devices, including the Android port, and is the current release manager of VLC.

Abstract: While Open Source Software has become mainstream, the understanding of its key principles, from ethics and collaboration to governance and community management, is gaining more interest and attention. There is a comprehensive volume of studies and reports backing up our individual and collective experience, yet we still cannot reliably measure these characteristics, and even less clearly define or assess them. In an attempt to build up confidence and foster maturity in this area, this talk will look at the various existing models and metrics related to OSS compliance and governance, and build upon them to propose methods and tools for their evaluation and analysis. We will discuss the requirements and essential questions to ask, offer guidelines for implementation and suggest efficient ways to present results.

Presentation by Hui Song, Senior Scientist, SINTEF. We would like to share our research journey towards enabling DevOps for IoT applications, and how Open Source makes the journey feasible and fun. DevOps is widely adopted for developing cloud applications, which supports developers in continuously placing software changes directly to production. As companies are including IoT and Edge devices into their IT infrastructures, supporting DevOps for IoT is a must. However, IoT challenges some fundamental assumptions behind DevOps, such as the homogeneous infrastructure and centralized governance, and therefore, breaking-through research is needed. Funded by H2020, 30 people from 12 partners crossing academia and industry gathered to solve these fundamental challenges, which results in full-stack open source tools for automatic deployment, learning-based operation and security monitoring of IoT applications, and risk management of the development process. The tools are evaluated on industrial use cases in intelligent transportation, smart building, and eHealth. The mass open source tools and communities around IoT development provides the sound foundation for this design research and the opportunities for the further exploitation of the results. In particular, we are proud of spinning off a start-up to commercialize the risk management services in the open source + SaaS model.

We propose a walkthrough of current utilization of Open Source Software in capacity planning for the Orange network infrastructure. The objective of our project is to have a platform that helps engineers to carefully plan the resources available to them as well as to correlate different incidents within remote parts of the infrastructure. In order to achieve this we started using Cacti with the Spine collector which worked great, but Orange France is a very large company with many entities, each with its own governance, and so we began to see some limitations. There was a need to centralize some information from different parts in Orange France as well as to integrate the equipment capacity and load values into BigData Orange. In order to achieve this we developed the “Puits de donneés” platform completely based on Open Source Software. The visualization and statistical analysis part is handled by Grafana while the ETL runs on Apache Software Foundation products like NiFi, Zookeeper and Ambari with a storage solution from MariaDB for which we did extensive performance tuning and customization due to the large amounts of data.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
