Diegetic sound comes directly from a scene, such as talking, noise from cars, or music from a radio. Non-diegetic sound is added during post-production, including music soundtracks and sound effects. This document discusses the differences between diegetic sound that originates in the scene, and non-diegetic sound that is added later during post-production.
