Homework # 1


3.- Design a video-based lesson that encompasses the three-stage activities
(previewing, viewing and postviewing suggested by Stempleski.

Stempleski (1987) states that, “a rich and exciting soured of video software for EFL/ESL
classes is authentic material. “Authentic video material, especially that which represents
what goes on in a non ELT environment, designed for its entertaining value rather than
language teaching, is a rich and exciting soured of video software for instruction in an
English as a second language (ESL classroom.

CONTEXT

This lesson is plan for 1st grade students of a public secondary school Unit 5: Places and
Buildings; teaching directions, the use of some prepositions, questions and vocabulary of
how to get to different buildings in a city.

OBJECTIVE

Motivate students by presenting authentic language interaction and providing an
authentic look at the culture. Extend their vocabulary by relating new meaning to their
previous knowledge. Distinguish some word funtions.

PREVIEWING

Before presenting the video I should engage the learner’s interest in what they will be
doing and prepare them to do it successfully. I will use some brainstorming questions and
hints of what they expect to view for example:


Teacher: What are we going to do know? (Fixing video equipment)

Ss: I think we are going to watch a video

Teacher: Good. What would you do if you are in a city you don’t know and you want to go
to an ATM or a restaurant.

Ss: I use a map

Teacher: ok. But what if you don’t have a map?

Ss: I’ll ask somebody in the street.

Teacher: Very good, know we’re going to watch a man asking somebody in the street to
find his way. Please watch and listen carefully as the next activity going to be based on
the videotaped material.

WHILEVIEWING

Students will have to pay attention to the video and be aware of different ways of
greetings, farewells, how to interrupt somebody and ask for directions, key words,
prepositions etc… Ss will write them down.


POSTVIEWING

Putting the students by teams to comment about the video and answer the following
questions.

1.-Where does this conversation take place?

2.-What was he looking for?

3.- was he lost?

4.- Did he get the right direction the first time?

5.- What does a block mean?

6.- What is an ATM?

7.- What was the reference point to get to the pizza place?

       a) next to the ice cream and across from the bridge

       b) next to the art gallery and in front of Art’s bar

8.- How many times did he have to ask to get to the place he was looking for?

9.- Did he buy the pizza?
