In the chemical industry the development of new products is also
affected more and more by requirements arising from environmental

11. Patented Surface Active Silicone
Acrylate Copolymer for Solvent-
borne Systems
BYK-3550 is not only a new surface additive. It bases on a new
technology called: Macromer Technology.
The additive is a silicone macromer modified polyacrylate, which
includes both characteristics (acrylate & silicone) in one additive.
This patented technology offers new properties which are only
achievable by such a new chemistry. The additive itself is not a mix-
ture. There are direct bonds between silicone chain and polyacrylate.
BYK-3550 shows, depending on the type respectively polarity of the
system, different shaped performances and a different mode of
action.
Macromer Technology
• Direct bond between silicone chain and polyacrylate (no mixture)
• Flexible adjustments to specific properties possible
• Lower silicone content but still excellent performance (excellent
surface tension reduction and better recoatability at the same time)

• No signifi cant reduction of the dry surface energy
• Excellent leveling due to acrylate backbone
• Good anti-crater properties due to effi cient silicone
• No increase of surface slip

New Surface Additives
Fluorine-free Silicone Additive to
Improve Substrate Wetting and
Leveling in Water-borne Systems
and Solvent-free UV Coatings
A drawback of modern formulations is that the
water component, due to a dramatically reduced
amount of co-solvents, causes a much higher
surface tension.
Hence, substrate wetting becomes more difficult.
Without using environmentally critical fluorosur-
factants or additive combinations with different
profiles (i.e. utilize a mix of surfactants, silicones,
acrylates or alcohol alkoxylates) BYK-3455 shows
a strong reduction of dynamic and static surface
tension and therefore an excellent substrate
wetting. Additionally, due to the high mobility
of the additive to the surface BYK-3455 gives an
extra positive effect on leveling.

Novel Wetting & Dispersing
Additives for Inkjet Inks
In general, wetting and dispersing additives are used to improve optical
properties of inkjet inks in terms of color strength, transparency and
gloss. Also they have to provide an outstanding viscosity reduction of
pigment concentrates as well as final inks in combination with an
efficient long-term storage stability without any viscosity shift.
Additionally wetting and dispersing additives have to meet specific
requirements, which are requested in inkjet applications, i.e.
prevention of blonzing phenomenon, avoiding cogation in thermal
printing process and improvement of brightness, sharpness and
scratch resistance (“smudge” resistance).
Another import aspect is a positive impact on processibility and
application of inkjet Inks. Suitable wetting and dispersing additives
have to offer very narrow and small-sized particle size distributions
to improve ink’s filterability and have to provide a noticeable positive
impact on jettability (long run application).
