SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONSIM
Jeanie Bohall
Rachael Anderson
POSTMODERNISM
• Belief that:
• There is not one single way to look at things
• Everyone is individually unique
POSTMODERNISM
• Values and beliefs fit into postmodernism
• Some values are:
• Compassion
• Empathy
• Honesty
SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONISM
• Belief that:
• How individuals come to understand the world
• Not everyone has the same outlook
SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONISM
• Values and beliefs fit into social constructionism
• Some values are:
• Success
• Accountability
• Acceptance
VALUES
• Our values are not just views of ourselves, but our social interactions. Values are a
part of our knowledge and actions; they are embedded in our society, our
relationships, and our lives (Moules, 2000).
PERSONAL BELIEFS
• Our personal beliefs effect our every day interactions
• Family of Origin
SUCCESS
• Growth in different areas such as:
• Cultures
• Language
• Individuals with different beliefs than what we may have
• Success could be attributed to the growth in movements that are of minority groups
• LGBT
• Feminists
ACCOUNTABILITY
• Accountability can be seen as:
• Something that ensures fairness and equality
• Individualism for all
• Understanding that everyone has different outlooks on life
FORGIVENESS
• Postmodernism and social constructism are found in forgiveness
• All individuals need forgiveness
• When someone is able to forgive, it frees themselves of those burdens
COMPASSION
• Wisdom in being able to recognize suffering
• Individualizing for each person that is encountered
HONESTY
• Honesty is a value that a majority of individuals have
• Society has warped this value
• Golden Rule
EMPATHY
• One of the most important values
• Connects postmodernism and social constructionism
• Can bring people from all different backgrounds and beliefs together
ACCEPTANCE
• All individuals are unique and come with their own ideas
• Acceptance is something that is important to have with postmodernism and social
constructionism
• The feeling of being accepted is freeing and comforting

Editor's Notes

  1. Postmodernism is a movement that believes there are a multitude of cultures and ways of understanding the world (Moules, 2000). Postmodern approaches identifying strengths and resources that promote a hopeful future (Gehart, 2012). Even though this seems to be an innovate concept, it has been around for some time longer. This is just recently become more socially acceptable. For example, even in more school districts, you are able to see more teachers that teach where the child is at – opposed to the teacher lecturing at the students and them only receiving one learning style. It is important that individuals feel that they are heard and understood.
  2. Core values and beliefs can be found in postmodernism. With the belief that everyone is unique and has their own ideas and traits, comes many different values. Compassion is important to explore how others will react to someone in a different walk of life than they are. Empathy can be seen through being in the moment with someone even though you may or may not understand or know exactly what to say. Honesty is important for all individuals if we are all wanting to feel heard and understood.
  3. Social constructionism is a philosophy that explains how we describe and account for our lives and the lives of others (Gergen, 1985). Through our social interactions, our lives are constructed to change and improve (Moules, 2000). Individuals are shaped by their surroundings. This is very much a Marriage and Family Therapy idea since MFTs look at the context in which individuals and families are in and exposed to. This can change someone for the better or for worse – but two people could go through the same event and get two completely different outlooks on it.
  4. Since social constructionism is how the surroundings and environment effects individuals, there are also values and beliefs that tie into this as well. Success can be dependent on how someone grows up, the opportunities that they are offered, and how they internalize their surroundings. Accountability is also something that can be learned in a culture growing up and can change as they get into adulthood. Acceptance is a large part of culture and the environment in which someone is exposed to. These can shape a person and can have long term affects.
  5. Everyone has values that they learn and/or adopt through their lifetime. These values could come from the family that they grew up in, friends that they had, and/or experiences that helped to shape who they are today. Values are what help define a person and what matters to them.
  6. The beliefs that we were taught and grew up to put our faith in come largely from our family of origin. The situations and experiences that we go through as individuals shape who we become. Beliefs could be linked to some values and vice versa. Religion and faith is something that comes along with these two main concepts, although they do not have to be linked to these.
  7. Social construct attends to political actions and social responsibilities (Modules, 2000). We create the concept of self by activities and processes between people (Modules, 2000), and with that comes success in the influence of cultures and languages.
  8. In a postmodern perspective, accountability is used in our ethical decisions (Moules, 2000). "These values call us to evaluate our relationships and to be accountable, responsible, and committed to them" (Moules, 2000, p. 237). Through our power, we have a responsibility and obligation to regard the world and its differences (Moules, 2000).
  9. Forgiveness is something that is very difficult to do, yet very powerful and freeing when done properly. Forgiveness can be explained as an act that is done when someone has done something wrong, yet it also is for the forgiver – maybe even more so. If someone is unable to forgive, they will harbor this burden forever. Once they are able to forgive, it may not make it easier for a while, but they are able to lift that weight and let it go.
  10. Compassion offers us wisdom in recognizing suffering, along with the obligation to do something about it (Moules, 2000). In a postmodern aspect, this value teaches us acceptance and tolerance for difference (Moules, 2000). We have power and with that power comes compassion, wisdom, and responsibility (Moules, 2000).
  11. The desire for honesty comes from the environment someone grew up in and/or the beliefs that were instilled in them. With society, there have been mixed views on honesty. One of which being, “What they don’t know won’t hurt ‘em”. This could be detrimental to a family if someone is not being honest about something that has happened. If you would want someone to be honest with you, then you should be honest with them. Depending upon the culture and/or situation, this can be done in a loving way or said so that the other person could be receptive of it.
  12. Not all individuals have the gift of empathy. This value is one of the most important values because it brings together all of the ideas, beliefs, values, and models. Empathy is a very powerful attribute to have. Someone can show empathy to another and they may have never been put in that situation before, but they can sit and be present and feel those feelings with another.
  13. Postmodernism teaches us acceptance and tolerance for differences (Moules, 2000). No one individual's ideas are one size fits all. We have the freedom to believe in what we want, as long as we understand and accept that our beliefs are our prerogative and not an exact truth for the world (Moules, 2000)
