Valerie Etter was an intern at the SFA Design Center during the summer/fall of 2012. The SFA Design Center was established in 2009 by Sally Ann Swearingen to provide interior design services for campus projects. As an intern, Valerie helped select furniture and furnishings for university projects, learned about manufacturers and product specifications, and assisted designers with client presentations. She gained experience working on small commercial and residential interior design projects at the university, including renovations at the Moore Historical Residence and Military Science building.

3. SALLY ANN SWEARINGEN – Program Coordinator, was
instrumental in establishing the SFASU Design Center in 2009.
She realized there was a need when campus personnel
asked her to do remodeling projects on campus other than a
few people located in the physical plant whom made
decisions in selecting new furniture and furnishings for
projects.
HISTORY
The Interior Design staff and classes at SFASU have made an
impact on interior design throughout the university (Alumni
Center, Austin Renovation, Development Office, Welcoming
Center Admissions, etc.)
An interior design staff must think health, safety, and welfare. An
intern at SFASU must consider financial investment by saving
the university money, time, simplify the departments life, assist
in defining and enhancing departments own style or image,
save the university legal problems, and streamline the interiors
process.
Today, the campus personnel may view available selections for
new furniture and furnishings for university projects. SFA Interior
Design faculty have expertise as design practitioners,
educators, and researchers.
4. SFA DESIGN CENTER SFA’s actual in-house design center allows interns to learn about
different manufacturers, which ones dominate in the field of
furniture, learn product knowledge about the furniture and
how to specify and price it, shipping and delivery processes of
furniture, select appropriate furniture for designated area,
utilize knowledge of building codes and sustainable practices,
properly present to client/department, and visually see other
designers communicate with clients and manufacturers.
