Overview from the Workshop
In 2014 the number of displaced people worldwide exceeded 50 million for the first time since WWII (a number that includes 19.5 million refugees). The world’s system for protecting refugees is broken. The world is still treating refugees as somebody else’s problem. Hiding behind closed borders and fears of being “flooded”, some countries ignore appeals for humanitarian aid.
The time to change is now. World leaders – in particular the richest countries – can start tackling this massive humanitarian crisis together with human rights organizations and activists. To do so, they must begin strengthening refugee systems: allowing people to apply for asylum, treating their refugee claims fairly, resettling the most vulnerable of all, and providing basics like education and healthcare.
In this workshop, attendees partnered with a team from Amnesty International and UX for Good to take on an audacious challenge: design a system for engaging activists to more quickly react to the refugee crisis and remain actively engaged on its progress.
Haiti: Trafficking in Persons 2016 Report by the State Department

Resolute activists hailing from influential Muslim families who have embraced Western ideals are causing disruption in Islamic spaces, both domestically and internationally. This situation mirrors the challenges one might face when dealing with a Muslim individual who identifies as LGBTQ+ and resides in close proximity to a devout Muslim family. While some may advocate for the exclusion or punishment of such individuals within our own countries, in other nations, private support and recognition may be extended to them. We must not turn a blind eye to these dynamics any longer. It is high time that we recognize the boundaries of our influence in these matters and understand how a Muslim should respond.

Now that our industry has (sort of) mastered responsive design, our next challenge as designers and developers is creating smarter products that utilise device sensors, data, and previous behaviour to create a more seamless, efficient and successful user experience. At Mirabeau we have been playing around with things like data, device sensors and (previous) customer behaviour that together help us anticipate a user’s intent. Paired with web development best practices like progressive enhancement, this allows us to create more efficient and enjoyable digital experiences. This talk will:

Resolute activists hailing from influential Muslim families who have embraced Western ideals are causing disruption in Islamic spaces, both domestically and internationally. This situation mirrors the challenges one might face when dealing with a Muslim individual who identifies as LGBTQ+ and resides in close proximity to a devout Muslim family. While some may advocate for the exclusion or punishment of such individuals within our own countries, in other nations, private support and recognition may be extended to them. We must not turn a blind eye to these dynamics any longer. It is high time that we recognize the boundaries of our influence in these matters and understand how a Muslim should respond.

I work at OpenTable, the worlds largest provider of online restaurant reservations. You may have used our app to book a table at a fancy restaurant, or maybe you've worked at one of those restaurants and used our software.
Since joining the design team, I have become one of the least fun people to dine out with. Just ask my wife. I used to be fully engrossed in our conversations, but now when we go out for a meal, I keep one eye on her, and one eye on the host, server, and kitchen staff to see how they deliver their unique style of service.
I will share with you some of the many hidden interactions that go on behind the scenes in a restaurant. Through these stories you will learn how many restaurants gather information about their diners in order to promote their own agenda, while others choose to use that information in order to create rich, immersive experiences.
Finally, I will share principles that will help you know when the use of personal information is proper, and when it is questionable.

The most effective way to achieve this is in collaborative, cross-functional teams that base their decisions on evidence from the market gained through experimentation and hypothesis. These teams bring product design, user experience, engineering, product management and organizational leadership together in a customer-centric effort to build the right product and to build the product right.
Jeff Gothelf is an expert in teaching teams how to work in this collaborative fashion and has captured these ideas in his book, Lean UX: Applying lean methods to improve user experience.

While we admirably practice our craft on these design challenges, improve a customer experience or help position businesses for greater success, we must also recognize the rest of the undesigned world before us. Why are we allowing so many social systems' experiences to exist ineffectively or even when excruciatingly painful? As designers, we owe ourselves the opportunity to fall in love with these problems and mold a response into something better for ourselves, family and friends, neighbors and community. We must be more human-centered, not simply follow a human-centered methodology. It's time we leverage more of our skill for an even higher purpose: solving the world's most pressing social challenges. This talk examines the unique value and power of designers and design thinkers to impact social change. It will provide case studies, current examples and inspiration for designers aspiring to leave a bigger imprint on society.

Everything we make has an intent, an output, and ultimately has consequences on how others live. At different scales, therefore, the products and services we design affect individuals, communities and societies. In the past decade, we as designers have started becoming aware of this perspective, and we have tackled projects with the desire to tackle some of the wicked problems we see around, and to have a positive impact. Both commercial companies and non-profit organisations have realised how powerful this combination of design approaches and impact-driven projects can be.
However, we are still building our toolkit, still failing often (sometimes in a painfully slow fashion, without realising it). We are still trying to understand how to be catalysts for social change when the scope for our work is confined by performance indicators that stop at 'profit growth for the quarter'.
Starting from a series of case studies, the talk wants to collect some of the successful (and less so) stories of the past few years, and inspire a perspective to start talking about meaningful design and about the impact that innovative projects have - over time.

Demand for UX Research services is growing as more companies are becoming aware of the benefits associated with UX Research. Google, Facebook, Airbnb and Drobpox as well as lesser known companies like DocuSign are rapidly expanding their UX Research departments to keep up with the increasing demand for user feedback. Ironically, while enthusiasm for UX Research is high, organizations often ignore research results as they move quickly through the product development cycle. My challenges with convincing organizations to act on research data led me to experiment with different tools and methods to make UX research more actionable in fast-pace environments. In my talk, I will share case studies from recent projects with companies in Silicon Valley to illustrate how to conduct and communicate research in a way that empowers teams and leads to specific actions within organizations.

This talk explores the responsibility of a designer and demonstrates why sometimes "over-designed" is good. User interface is often seen as a crystal goblet, a transparent container which should emphasise but never obstruct the content. A lot has been said and written about the "disappearing computer' or natural user interfaces and "the best UI is no UI" mantra is so ubiquitous today.
In my talk I hope to shed a new light on these concepts demonstrating how the "no UI" approach may sometimes be considered harmful, and results in products which confuse, scare, or deceive people.

- 8. What does Amnesty do? We investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen. We lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law. By telling the powerful stories of the people we work with, we mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. We support people to claim their rights through education and training.
