Although uncomfortable and sometimes
painful, scoliosis is a fairly easy condition to
treat in cases of early detection. Many
schools and pediatricians check young
children for scoliosis, but parents should also
learn how to perform a scoliosis test.
 The forward bend test is one of the easiest
ways for a teacher, parent, or physician to
check a child for scoliosis.
For the forward bend test, a child leans forward
at the waist, with his or her arms hanging
comfortably with the palms touching. As the
child maintains this position, the examiner looks
for any abnormalities or uneven areas along
the back and ribs. A doctor may use a
scoliometer during a forward bend test. If
scoliosis seems possible or the examiner is
unsure, an x-ray easily clarifies the results.
