Using Social Media for Job Search
One of the wonderful things about the internet is that it can help you find
almost anything; gifts, books, games, DVDs, and yes – even a job! In fact, if
you know how to use social media in your job search then you have a
significant advantage over others who do not.
Let’s talk a little about how to effectively use social media when looking for
employment.
Which Social Media Sites Should I Use?
This is the first question you should ask yourself. It might be the case that you
are already a member of specific sites but hadn’t thought of using them in
this capacity, or it could be that you’ve never even heard of them and don’t
know where to begin!
In either case, here is a run down of some of the more effective social media
sites you should be using in your job search:
LinkedIn: This should be your first port of call when looking for a job.
Like Facebook, LinkedIn allows its users to create a profile page about
themselves and to add others who they know to their list of contacts.
What’s the difference then? LinkedIn is specifically designed for
working professionals. This means that networking is always about your
career and job prospects, allowing people who have worked with you to
endorse your specific skill-sets, letting employers see what you’re
capable of through those endorsements. Make as many connections as
you can with people you have dealings with and watch those
endorsements fly in.
Facebook: You might be thinking that Facebook is only there to let you
keep in touch with old buddies or waste some time with an online game,
but Facebook is an extremely powerful networking tool which can help
you get a new job. Businesses and recruitment agencies all
haveFacebook pages which you can like from your profile and engage
with. Often these pages post links to jobs, training opportunities, or to
websites which list job openings, making this a really efficient hub for
finding out about employment opportunities quickly. Don’t forget that
personal contacts and friends might be able to help you find work too!
Twitter: Twitter is a great way to network within your industry of
choice. Once you’ve set up an account, your first step should be to
identify and start following the twitter accounts of companies within
your field of interest and recruitment agencies. Each time these
accounts send out a tweet, you’ll be notified immediately via email or
your phone. This way you can find out quickly about job opportunities
even before they have been advertised in a magazine or newspaper.
Alternatively, you could do a keyword search at TwitJobSearch where
you can browse for twitter accounts relating directly to job postings of
your choice.
Blogs: Another great source for finding job leads is through industry
related blog pages. These can be found via a web search, with the most
successful sites being run by industry insiders who will post links to job
openings, as well as helpful hints and tips on how to develop your C.V.
and improve your interview technique. Another approach to blog sites
is to set up your own where you can write some posts about your
industry, and use the account user-name to comment on more successful
blogs. This might just encourage well recognised bloggers to promote
your blog, making it – and you – known to employers within that
industry looking for talented, knowledgeable individuals to add to their
team.
Just a Few More Tips About Social Media and Job Hunting
Before you race off onto the social media scene to find that perfect career
move, please do keep the following in mind:
1. If you have any previous accounts, scroll through your history and
delete anything undesirable. This means anything offensive or
inappropriate. Potential employers increasingly check interviewees’
social media pages for anything which could make their company look
bad in the future by association. Don’t give them a reason not to hire
you, get rid of any content that might cause offence, even if it was just
said in jest. This includes deleting friends’ comments or posts which
appear on your page too!
2. Keep your posts positive! Cultivate a sense of positivity about your
situation and employers will be impressed by this outlook. Avoid
disparaging or argumentative comments towards others, especially
former work colleagues which could be looked upon as combative.
3. Change your privacy settings so that if a company does wish to look at
your social networking accounts (your local laws will determine
whether they can make this request of you or not) that only you can give
them access. This means no one from the general public can view your
posts without your express permission.
4. Engage, engage, engage! Do everything you can to engage with those
within your industry. It’s called social networking for a reason! Post to
industry colleagues’ pages, interact with company accounts in a positive
way and you just might land a job opportunity out of it.
Social networking is a fantastic way to find your dream job and, if used
correctly, can make the search so much more productive.
Happy hunting!
