WWII improved life in Detroit as the auto industry boomed to support the war effort, reducing unemployment. When African Americans started moving to white neighborhoods after the war, it increased racial tensions and white flight to the suburbs. The postwar economic boom expanded Detroit's population and economy but the city made errors in not addressing racial inequality and losing control of its expanding borders which later led to its decline.
