Digital Transformation with Docker, Cloud, and DevOps: How JCPenney Handles B...Docker, Inc.
At JCPenney, Black Friday is one of our most critical shopping periods, both in stores and increasingly online. Hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line for us in a narrow shopping window so scaling to handle the traffic and being able to deploy promotions and fix issues without disruption to the website and our business are critical. Our prior way of delivering applications was built on a waterfall model, locked in to a set of ISV vendor dependencies, with rigid silos. It was too slow and expensive to deploy changes and keep pace with our business. We needed an application delivery platform that can handle the scale of Black Friday, and allow us to adapt our systems as our business continues to evolve. In our DockerCon session, we will tell you how we are transforming JCPenney’s omnichannel business with Docker and open solutions like Jenkins, Spring cloud, Netflix OSS and Ansible. We went live in our first iteration in just two months, and then on-boarded over 30 services in the first 6 months. We learned quite a bit along the way and you'll hear why we made an important decision to switch from Docker Community Edition to Docker Enterprise Edition. Our new cloud-native, Dockerized systems handle over 100,000 deployments per year and can scale to handle events like Black Friday with zero issues.
DockerCon 18 Cool Hacks: Cloud Native ML with Docker Enterprise EditionDocker, Inc.
In their talk, David and Michelle showed building an app using Kubeflow first with Docker Desktop and then on Docker Enterprise in the cloud. And they even took advantage of Google Cloud Tensorflow Processing Units native to the platform.
Sharon Frazier and Don Bauer of Franklin American Mortgage Company summarized their company's approach to innovation through a DevOps transformation. They tackled problems by creating a new tool called "Delivery" to manage services using Docker EE. Delivery helped standardize pipelines and images while enabling visibility through monitoring and compliance checks. The team focused on pillars of visibility, simplification, standardization, and experimentation. Currently, Delivery manages over 1,000 containers across many environments and sees continuous improvement.
This document discusses the challenges of transitioning between monolithic, microservices, and serverless architectures. It presents several potential solutions to this problem, ultimately advocating for a hybrid approach that allows applications to utilize elements of each architecture. The key benefits of this hybrid app vision are fast delivery of new features, a gradual transition with minimal disruption, and a unified toolset. The document demonstrates this approach using Gloo, an open source project that acts as a layer to connect applications built with different architectures.
Today I presented a session on "Top 5 Exciting Dockercon 2018 Announcements"in Docker Bangalore Meetup which happened in Nutanix India Office, Bellandur Road. It was yet another great opportunity to meet and network with Docker Enthusiasts.
Continuous Integration (CI) involves automating the compilation and testing of code changes multiple times a day. Agile teams typically configure CI to include automated compilation, unit testing, and integration with source control systems. CI helps teams integrate code regularly to prevent integration issues, get early feedback on designs, and ensure code quality. Common tools for CI include CruiseControl, Jenkins, TeamCity, Travis CI, GitLab CI, and others. These tools automate building, testing, and reporting on code changes to help developers integrate code smoothly and quickly.
Continuous integration (CI) requires developers to integrate code into a shared repository multiple times per day, with each check-in verified by an automated build to detect problems early. Continuous deployment aims to minimize lead time between writing new code and deploying it to production users, by extending CI. Docker and Jenkins can be used together for CI/CD, with Docker containerizing applications and Jenkins automating the build, test and deploy process.

Autoscaling in Kubernetes allows applications to automatically scale resources up or down based on metrics like CPU usage. It addresses challenges with traditional autoscaling approaches by being platform independent and scaling pods quickly using the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler. The document outlines an architecture that sets autoscaling to increase application pods when CPU usage crosses 50%, with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 pods. It then demonstrates this through scenarios of idle and heavy loads, ramping up users over 10 seconds to test the autoscaling capabilities.
Why and how to use Kubernetes for scaling of your multi-tier (n-tier) appli...Ashnikbiz
Kubernetes can be used to scale multi-tier applications by providing tools for container orchestration, including service discovery, load balancing, storage orchestration, and self-healing capabilities. It addresses challenges with traditional monolithic architectures by allowing microservices that are isolated, declarative, and can autoscale horizontally and vertically through features like horizontal pod autoscaling, vertical pod autoscaling, and cluster autoscaling. This allows applications to dynamically add or remove pods and nodes as needed to meet changing workload demands.
Zero trust in a multi tenant environment Ashnikbiz
Vault provides secure multi-tenancy by allowing the creation of namespaces that isolate "Vaults within a Vault". Each namespace can have independent authentication methods, secret engines, policies, identities and access management. Vault also enables API-driven encryption through secret engines like Transit and unified identities across multiple environments through its identity system. These capabilities allow Vault to securely store, restrict access to, and manage encryption of secrets and keys for multi-tenant infrastructure.
