Presented at the 2010 Electronic Resources & Libraries Conference. -- Benjamin Heet, University of Notre Dame -- Abstract: Usage statistics with cost per use have become an important factor in evaluating an electronic resource. This session will consider the ways to gather usage statistics and also look at the other points of considerations in e-resource evaluation. Discussion will also cover the value of usage statistics and whether we are just being overwhelmed by numbers.

Humans receive significantly more information from vision than other four senses. 50% of the human brain is dedicated to visual functions, and images (pictures all at once) are processed faster than text (in a linear fashion). 65% of the population are visual learners. So Info graphics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. Present complex information quickly and clearly. Example: Washington Metro Utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. The two main parts of all info graphics are The Content is king Let data lead Gather facts, derive Statistics and serve as the content Organize the info The visual Consists of colors and graphics It is about telling a story Capture the state of trend Keep it simple Position, Orientation, size, shape, and color are important There are software tools to create Info Graphics Adobe Flash Adobe Illustrator HTML 5 & CSS3 Inkscape Tableau Public On-line Info graphics creators such as Infogr.am Piktochart Easel.ly Info graphics are often shared between users of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter

In 2007, Amherst College launched a new web site using the open source content management system, Drupal. Since then, the Library has worked with IT's Web Services Group to build several web-based tools including a database locator, course guide builder, and dynamically generated new book lists. During the Summer of 2009 we embarked on another collaboration project to improve electronic reserve management and access from course web pages.

In this blended presentation, we will cover two different but related topics: The reorganization or Technical Services at the University of Northern Colorado and the launch of a homegrown MS Access application to proactively check our e-journal holdings. In 2008, the University of Northern Colorado created a task force to re-configure Technical Services into a new model. The genesis of this decision was the awareness that electronic resources in all their variety were here to stay and knowledge about how to acquire, license, mount, maintain, afford, and renew these resources should not reside with a single E-resource librarian but should be shared across the department.

This 20 minutes talk describes an automated data processing system, ComputableFacts, whose goal is to recover information from unstructured data in a variety of formats (such as Microsoft Office or Adobe PDF documents, emails, web pages, etc.) and convert it into a more usable form. Its key features are : Security: • Enforce authorizations across multiple access models to the database: batch, interactive and real-time. Data Engineering: • Extract data and metadata from a variety of sources and file formats • Provides a uniform representation of all data, regardless of its initial structure or format. Knowledge Engineering: • Build facts databases manually and/or automatically • Automatically derive new facts using rules • Execute complex queries Knowledge Dissemination: • Allow users to create alerts • Allow users to share and comment on documents • Allow users to create and export query-focused datasets • Allow users to rate documents. Later, recommend them documents of interest.

Traditional information retrieval approaches deal with retrieving full-text document as a response to a user's query. However, applications that go beyond the "ten blue links" and make use of additional information to display and interact with search results are becoming increasingly popular and adopted by all major search engines. In addition, recent advances in text extraction allow for inferring semantic information over particular items present in textual documents. This talks presents how enhancing a document with structures derived from shallow parsing is able to convey a different user experience in search and browsing scenarios, and what challenges we face as a consequence.

Lately, there's a trend on mining web content semantics and dynamics in order to enhance search capabilities by either providing direct answers to users or allowing for advanced interfaces or capabilities. In this tutorial we will look into different ways of mining textual information from Web archives, with a particular focus on how to extract and disambiguate entities, and how to put them in use in various search scenarios. Further, we will discuss how web dynamics affects information access and how to exploit them in a search context.

For many years, libraries have been dreaming about a simple, easy, fast search solution that unifies all of the resources into a single repository. In the current model, the user is faced with the problem of dealing with multiple information silos and no-compelling starting place in implementing their search. Recently, the introduction of a “Web-scale discovery” layer, or Next-Generation Catalog, can provide this starting point for library patrons. This talk will discuss how these Next-Generation library discovery applications can go beyond the local library holdings and beyond federated search to offer a single Google like search service across all local and subscription resources.

http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024 Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup. The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
