1830 - 18601834 – The “Mill Girls” of Lowell, Massachusetts go on strike to protest wage cuts.1835 – Philadelphians strike for a hour work day.1847 - New Hampshire enacts first state 10-hour-day law1860 – Shoemaker’s strike in New England.
1860 - 18901866 – National Labor Union is founded.1877 – Great uprising of railroad workers begins in Martinsburg, Virginia.“Molly Maguires”, or Irish coal workers, hanged in Pennsylvania.1882 – First Labor Day celebrations take place.1885 – Knights of Labor founded in Chicago.1886 – American Federation of Labor (AFL) founded. The first president was Samuel Gompers.
1890 - 19001890 – Carpenters’ Union strikes and wins the 8 hour day.1894 – The Pullman Strike; railroad workers boycott Pullman sleeping cars.1898 – Erdman Act prohibits discrimination against railroad workers for being in a union.
1900 - 19101900 – U.S Industrial Commission declares trade unions good for democracy.1903 – Women’s Trade Union League (WTUL) founded.1905 – Industrial Workers of the World founded.1909 – Uprising of the 20,000 takes place to protest conditions within the garment industry.
1910 - 19201911 – Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire kills almost 150 workers.1912 – “Bread and Roses” textile strike takes place in Lawrence, Mass.1913 – Ludlow Massacre kills 20 during a coal miners’ strike1919 – Great strike wave across America.
1920 - 19401924 – Samuel Gompers dies, and Willam Green becomes new AFL president.1926 – Railway Labor Act is set up.1929 – Stock market crashes and Great Depression begins.1931 – President Franklin Roosevelt presents the New Deal to Congress.1935 – National Relations Act and Social Security Act passed.Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO) formed.1937 - Auto Workers win sit-down strike against General Motors in Flint, Michigan.1938 - Fair Labor Standards Act establishes first minimum wage and 40-hour week.
