US Department of Energy Announces Funds for Wind Projects

The US Department of Energy announced it will distribute $1.35 million in funding to wind energy projects led by four US companies: Pika Energy, Northern Power Systems, Endurance Wind Power, and Urban Green Energy. The funding is part of the DOE's Competitiveness Improvement Project and will help reduce costs of small and midsize wind systems by assisting manufacturers to improve techniques and designs to minimize costs and maximize efficiency. Certification from independent organizations will follow successful cost reduction and efficiency efforts.

It is widely recognised that additional large–scale early mover projects are needed to advance CCS/CCUS. These projects will reduce CCS cost through ‘learning by doing’ and by serving as platforms to demonstrate emerging lower-cost technologies. They will also increase public confidence in the safety and efficacy of CCS. However, high capture costs and lack of incentives are discouraging new large–scale projects from entering the planning pipeline and making it difficult for existing projects to reach a financial investment decision.
The National Enhanced Oil Recovery Initiative (NEORI) and the Coal Utilization Research Council (CURC) have each developed concepts for incentivising large–scale projects through a tax credit tied to the use of captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery. Both organisations estimate that the government would recover its credit investment within 10 years from tax and royalty revenue received on additional oil production, and that the investment would become revenue positive for the government thereafter.

Pika Energy, Northern Power Systems, Endurance Wind Power, and Urban Green Energy will receive funds as part of the second phase of the Competitiveness Improvement Project.

US Department of Energy Announces Funds for Wind Projects To further the DOE's Clean Energy Manufacturing Initiative, the funding will help reduce the cost of small and midsize wind energy systems and assist US manufacturers as they improve their manufacturing techniques and turbine designs in an effort to minimize component costs and increase efficiency. If these efforts are successful, the manufacturers will eventually earn certification from accredited independent organizations.
