The city is reaching out to Edmontonians to help out with the city’s annual Garlic
Mustard pull in the Mill creek area. The Garlic mustard weed is detrimental to that
ecosystem and needs to be removed so that it does not ruin the biodiversity of the Mill
creek area. There are two planned event pulls, which involve residents coming out for a
couple of hours, and pulling out the weeds. Supplies such as garbage bags will be
provided along with snacks for volunteers, but the pull should not require too much
equipment as the weeds do not have and defense mechanisms such as thorns or skin
irritants.

There is a great importance to removing the weed from our environment as it has
various negative affects over the long term such as harming orchids and plants that are
native to that area of Edmonton. These plants although detrimental are fairly easy to get
rid of within the first few years of their lives, so it is important to combat them and
remove them from the ecosystem before there seeds are ingrained into the soil as they
can last for up to 5 years.
