stress, anger and sadness of depression, too: my cousin, Mitch, committed suicide by hanging
himself. Although it has been two years, the pain has still not completely gone away.
Violet Markey has lost her older sister (and best friend) in a fatal car crash on an icy bridge. She
is overwhelmed by guilt, as she was the one who begged her sister to take her home, and told her
to take the shortcut, ultimately leading to Eleanor s death. When this happens, she loses friends
and is afraid to make any, afraid she will lose them too. After losing Mitch, I also lost my Nana
and Papa (grandmother and grandfather). My cousin, Dimity had bowel cancer and although
she is alive and well now, it is still scary to think how close we were to losing her. This made me
realize, unlike other people my age, how close death is in our everyday lives, and, unlike
cartoon character, we cannot peel ourselves from the rubble and complete our quest or journey.
Losing some of the major people in my life has, just like Violet, made me scared to let go of
people and even more scared of letting them into my heart. However, just like with Violet, her

Crow laws kept white and African American people separate in public, the Ku Klux, Klan forced

happening to change these injustices. African Americans participated in thousands of nonviolent
boycotts, freedom marches, and protests and nothing was ever changed until the morning of
September 15, 1963. On that morning, a bomb, made of dynamite, forever changed the lives of the
citizens attending the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Four young black girls
died in the bombing, inspiring poet Dudley Randall to write his powerful poem, Ballad of
Birmingham. Through his poetry, Randall influenced change in the Civil Rights movement, and by
owning the largest printing press of the 1960s, played a huge role in the Black Arts Movement.

Can one person truly immortalize himself? This is a question most people are often plagued with.
Although one s body is mortal, Ozymandias, written by Shelley, conveys the truth of immortality.
The poem is about a traveler telling a story about an Egyptian pharaoh,
Ozymandias, and his statue. In the poem, a statue of Ozymandias is described by the author as
crumbled and scarcely left. Even though he was successful in his time period, his legacy could not
last. Therefore, no matter how much power one holds, his work will eventually be forgotten to all
and left in the past. Nothing truly can remain throughout all of time: everything one built will
eventually be destroyed by time. The idea that power is transient is portrayed through
Shelley s use of irony, symbolism, and figurative language.
Irony is extremely prevalent in this poem, contrasting power and mortality. Throughout this piece,
the author describes Ozymandias as a ruthless and powerful Egyptian ruler, but continually relates

been extensively studied. Communication, if poorly managed, can lead to negative consequences

Hunt, Paulsen (2004)), psychological strain, low job satisfaction, and increase in turnover intention

Europe where he was beaten, robbed, and abandoned. In 1886 Joseph had made his way back to
London unable to speak. The police searched Merrick and found Fredrick Treves business card.
Treves brought Merrick to the London Hospital. Fredrick Treves decided to admit Merrick for
his physical condition. Francis Carr Gomm, supported Treves idea. Merrick s condition had
worsened over the past two years. The London Hospital was not equipped to take care of an
incurable patient so Carr Gomm talked to other hospitals and institutions no one would take
Merrick. Carr Gomm put a letter in the New York Times giving an outline of Joseph Carey
Merrick s life. In result of this letter the public gave much support. This support earned enough
money to get Merrick a place to spend the rest of his life in the hospital under watch by the
nurses and staff. Merrick s case attracted many people. Many people visited Merrick in the
hospital and continued to give funds. One important person out of the many that visited Merrick
was the Princess of Wales Alexandra. Since Merrick had so many supporters he was able to
fulfill all of his desires before he died. A few thing she got to do with the money from his

spent a lot of his time writing poetry and building a church out of playing cards. Merrick stayed
in the hospital most of the time. Over time Merrick s condition slowly worsened over the four
years that he was in the London Hospital. He got a lot of care from the staff and nurses. He spent
much of his time in the living quarters or in bed because of his decreased energy. His head
