Universal Immunization Programme
• The immunization Programme is one of the key interventions for the
protection of children from preventable life-threatening conditions.
• It is one of the largest immunization programs in the world and a
major public health intervention in the country.
• The immunization Programme in India was introduced in 1978 as
the Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI).
• The Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) was implemented in
a phased manner to cover all districts in the country by 1989-90.
• UIP become a part of the Child Survival and Safe Motherhood
Programme in 1992 and RCH in 1997
Universal Immunization Programme
• Under the Universal Immunization Programme, the Government of India
is providing vaccination to prevent eleven vaccine-preventable diseases
1. Severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis
2. Diphtheria
3. Pertussis
4. Tetanus
5. Polio
6. Measles
7. Rubella
8. Hepatitis B
9. Haemophilus Influenza type B (Hib)
10.Pneumococcal
11. Diarrhoeas due to Rota virus.
