What is Universal Design?
› UD is when the design of a product or environment benefits

as many different types of people as possible. The design
that is mean to benefit people may also end up benefiting
others, even if it wasn’t originally created for their use.

› Example: The use of an elevator in a building for people that

are unable to climb stairs. This also benefits people who may
not enjoy using the stairs, or have a heavy load to carry.



Universal Design in Education,
according to eric.ed.gov, “deals
with the idea that education, in
general, should be designed up
front for access by all students,
whether the curriculum, the
instructional strategies, or the
assessment.” (http://eric.ed.gov)



Universal Design where education
is concerned focuses on the
students who are marginalized;
this includes students with special
needs, ESL students, and students
with other disabilities.

Provide multiple ways of
representation
Provide multiple means of
action and expression

 Three guidelines:

 Provide options for physical
movement
 Provide options for expression and
fluency
 Provide options for executive
functions (goals, organizations, etc.)

3.

Multiple means of
engagement – how to help
students regulate their own
behavior

 Provide options for recruiting interest
 Provide options for sustaining effort
and persistence
 Provide options for self-regulation

All in all, the end results of UD in education is:

› To rid learning environments, schools, and curricula of their

own disabilities
› Less labeling of the student as disabled
› More student engagement and motivation
› Student as an independent learner
› All of the students are on the same page
