Universal Design (UD) aims to make the design of products and environments usable by people of all abilities to the greatest extent possible without adaptation. UD applied to education seeks to provide multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement to students with diverse needs and abilities from the outset. The goals of UD in education are to eliminate barriers created by educational environments and curricula themselves and increase student engagement, motivation, and independence.

What is Universal Design?
› UD is when the design of a product or environment benefits
as many different types of people as possible. The design
that is mean to benefit people may also end up benefiting
others, even if it wasn’t originally created for their use.
› Example: The use of an elevator in a building for people that
are unable to climb stairs. This also benefits people who may
not enjoy using the stairs, or have a heavy load to carry.
