UN Women continued to work towards a world in which women and men, and girls and boys, are equal. From advancing norms and standards, to expanding women’s leadership and participation, bolstering women’s economic empowerment, and ending violence against women and girls, we are registering solid gains together with our partners. We are joining forces to ignite a global movement for gender equality, women’s empowerment and the human rights of women and girls.
Right now, we have a unique opportunity to make greater progress as the international community works to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), define a post-2015 development framework and review progress since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing.The agreement reached at the 2014 UN Commission on the Status of Women lays a strong foundation for a transformative global development agenda that tackles structural gender inequality.
Since I assumed leadership of UN Women in August 2013, I have placed an emphasis on strengthening partnerships for action and ensuring that the UN system delivers as one for women and girls.We are reaching out to men and boys, and forging closer collaboration with women’s groups, civil society, and the private sector as we support governments in national development. Every time more women are elected to parliament, and more girls complete school and graduate from university, we are making progress.
Every time perpetrators of violence against women are prosecuted and brought to justice, and more laws are adopted and implemented to protect women’s rights, we move ahead. Every time women’s voices are heard in peace talks and nation building, and increased resources are dedicated to women’s full and equal participation, we take steps forward. This annual report showcases the progress and potential of UN Women.

The struggle for peace and equality, especially from the oppressors, is a hard task and may not be as easy as it may sound. The reason that makes it hard to attain is that the oppressors will also be struggling to continue oppressing the vulnerable and remaining at the top while subjecting the vulnerable to hard conditions. Various undertakings have to be involved and from various sections of individuals, especially the youths in the fight to attain this peace and equality for all the individuals and those that are oppressed by the oppressors. Numerous processes also have to be undertaken in the missions of struggling for peace and equality for all. As a result, it becomes important to look at various aspects that are related to the struggle for peace and equality.
Youths and fight for peace and equality: The role they play in peace-building and struggle for equality.
The youths have an essential role to play in the fight for equality and peace, and they are deemed to be at the forefront of this struggle. Specifically, according to Felice, (2016), the youths play the role of supporting advocacy for both peace-building missions and creating meaningful lives. The other essential role that the youth play in the search for peace and equality for all is that they develop essential approaches that are meant for advancing the political input of all the persons and developing essential efforts destined for making the above political participation be sustainable and even prevail for long. The youths are also integrated into the civil structures aimed at ensuring peace as well as equality for everyone prevails as the failure to integrate them may lead to the entire failure of such peace-finding missions and corporations, (Kemper, 2005). However, despite the essential roles played by the youths, other sections of the community may fail to appreciate them and their efforts, especially when dealing with issues related to peace-missions.

Discussing Gender and Internatonal Cultural Relations
Gender equality calls for women and men to have equal rights and entitlements to human, social, economic and cultural development, and an equal voice in civil and political life. This does not mean that women and men will become the same, but that women’s and men’s rights, responsibilities and opportunities do not depend on whether they are born male or female. The pursuit of gender equality has a long history. Especially in the West, it can be seen as an extension of the ongoing claims for liberty and equality unleashed by the French Revolution, when equality before the law became newly established as the basis of the social order.
Well into the 20th century, the extended struggle for the franchise has stood as the symbol of a much wider struggle by women playing a central role in extending, defending or giving substance to social citizenship rights. The call for equal rights for women resurfaced in the 1960s and 1970s alongside movements for civil and human rights, peace, the environment, and gay liberation. One of the major triumphs of this stage was the UN adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1979, the first international human-rights instrument to explicitly define all forms of discrimination against women as fundamental human-rights violations. CEDAW emphasised women's individual rights in opposition to those traditionalists who defend major inequalities in the status quo as the ‘complementary’ roles for men and women that nature intended. It called for the equality of men and women in public and political life, before the law and with respect to nationality rights, in education, employment, the provision of healthcare (including access to family planning services), and in marriage and family matters.
Another high point was the constitution of the new South Africa (1996 – built on the Women’s Charter for Effective Equality and the ANC’s 1993 Bill of Rights), which emphasises the equal citizenship of women and men and people of all races, by making provision for equal protection under the law, equal rights in the family, and in all areas of public life. In the last three to four decades, this pursuit of gender equality has brought successive challenges to many major areas of social, economic and political life, beginning with a quest for equal representation in the corridors of power, but developing into a broader critique of masculine bias and ‘power politics’, and the search for forms of mutual empowerment.

Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. INTRODUCTION The conference entitled, “Why 1999 matters in 2020:A conversation on the Hague Appeal for Peace conference and the UN at 75”, took place on 29th Nov at the Economic and Social Council of the United States. It was delivered by Cora Weiss, President of the Hague Appeal for Peace and the United Nations Representative of the International Peace Bureau and Honorary Patron of the Committee on Teaching About the United Nations. Along with Ms. Weiss there were 3 more speakers at the conference: Alison Smale Nyuon Susan Sebit Susan Adams All the prestigious speakers spoke about the global peace and different ways we can achieve it. They gave references from the past that started this peace movement. They also talked about how women should be given the opportunity to come in politics and make decisions for themselves and the world.
- 3. 1. Alison Smale She is a British journalist who has been serving as the Under- Secretary-General for GlobalCommunications,United NationsDepartment of Public Information. At the conference she talked about world Peace and security. She said that these 2 values were the pillarsthrough which fundamental objectives like social progress, better livingstandards and human rights couldbe achieved. She also said that she believes in the future generation and support their refusal to accept the world as they inheritedand their courage to make it a better, brighter and bold one. She said that the UNAI works in their communities to advance key areas such as access to education, climate action, gender equality etc. The UNAI website is: www.academicimpact.un.org
- 4. 2. Cora Weiss She is a supporter of the United Nations, an early member of Women Strike for Peace (WSP). She is in being in the fore- front for the fight for civil and human rights, peace and nucleardisarmament, women’s empowerment, peace educationand the abolishmentof war for more than 4 decades. Her main focus was on world peace and justice for women. She talked about giving women a voice in peace making, peace building and peace keeping. She also talked about removing the gender gap in the society. She said that women should be allowed to join politics and make decisions. She also said that if we look at the world there are a many as women as there are men and that men should not take decisionsfor the 100%. She believed that the World peace can never be achieved if women are not included in the decision making and peace negotiations.
- 5. 3. Nyuon Susan Sebit She was this year’s recipient of the global network of the women’s peace builders Cora Weiss fellowship for young women peace builders. She isa Human rights lawyer from South Sudan. She shared her experiences of the work that she’s been doing back in her country with the fellowship for Peace Building. She told usabout the condition of women in Sudan that they suffer from violence andare subjected to human right abuses. She said that wars haveaffected women inmany wayslike sexually, physically and psychologically. She asked for the support of the UN for improving the condition of south Sudan’s women asshe said that most of them are illiterate which leadsto the non- participation inthe politics and peace process. She also agreed to Cora Weiss by saying that only “A peace process where the women are apart of it, is sustainable.” She brought to UN’s notice that South Sudan would be very soon having a
- 6. generational gap because many young people havedied in the war of 2013. She then also said that it isstill not so late to help the youth in mobilising their talent as thistime many young people havetaken the initiative to helpin the peace building process. She at last thanked the Nationalalliance for women lawyers for giving her the opportunity and for helping the South Sudan Community. 4. Susan Adams She devoted her life for her goal that is to provide young people education and to instil in them the sense of their shared humanity. She believed that higher education in particular was the way to achieve world peace. She shared with us how she and her husbandMichael againbecame part of the UN and how the UN helped them to offer global education to students worldwide. She was grateful for all the work and support that the other speakers have shown in the areas of peace building,security, civil rights and human rights.
