I started the planning my robot by getting some inspiration from actual robots that are used in both video games and other media. I decided that I really liked
the mister handy design and took the most inspiration from it overall when coming up with my design idea.
I also came up with an ideas generation map that would help me further to think of the design by giving it some actual context in-game I.e what would be its
purpose, is it a military robot, does it do work for you etc... by deciding on these factors I can focus on making a robot that based around something specific.

I started work on the actual design pack for my robot. Using the template provided, I drew a sketch of my robot from 3 different perspectives showing off each
most sides of the robot, giving me a good starting place to work from when actually modeling it in 3D.
I started work on the model soon after, starting by taking a primitive circle and slicing it in half to act as the main body.
I then cut an indent out of the front to act as an eye-hole and then placed a ball primitive inside to act as an early eyeball.
Next, I added a cylindrical base that would be the body of the robot and would also connect the head, to the legs.
Then, I added some legs using the multishift tool to stretch out cubes and shape them into a more leg style shaped set of rectangles.
I wanted to give him a secondary means of transportation, therefore I felt a jet pack was appropriate. I started by multi shifting out a few polygons to make a
simple backpack looking cube on the back side of the head. Then, I added to cylinders and bevelled them inwards to make the actual thruster parts of the jet
pack.
Doing a similar thing as the jet pack, I then took a few polygons on the side of the head and multi shifted them out a few times to make a basic arm shape. Since
It would be a military style robot I wanted it to have some lethal weaponry but I wanted something quite surreal. Therefore I decided that on the end of the arm,
there should be a drill.
Since a drill would be inadequate weaponry for a military robot, I wanted to give it some rockets. Therefore I began by making some struts on the left side of the
head by stretching out some polygons again. Then I created a long, rectangular box that would house the rockets by stretching out a cube primitive and placed it
onto the struts.
Finally all that was left was to add the actual rockets and all that had to be made was the nose cone of the rockets as they would be all that is visible. All it took
was making multiple cone primitives and spacing them out evenly into the side of the box.
All that was left to do now was to add a few extra details and give the robot basic textures ready to be properly textured in Layout. Due to its purpose, I dedcided
a camoflage theme would be appropriate for the textures.
On the jet pack I added a few fuel packs that are just long cylinder primitives textured red as traditional explosive things usually are. Also there are metal slats
that act as the vent of the jet pack to avoid it over heating.
On the wrist of the drill, I put a small circle so that it wouldn’t be just arm and then drill, I felt it need a primer with something that the drill could actually be
attached to.
For the eye area, I added some metal plates that would in theory close around the eye when not in use or in extreme cases in order to defend and protect the
eyeball.
I felt although it had some weaponry and for what it was made for, it would do the job; I thought it also was very limited in what it could potentially do, therfore I
added some tentacle like arms sticking out from the back which could grab weapons or pickup valuable items etc... giving it much more flexibility in what the
robot could do. It also looked a LOT cooler.

Now everything had a base texture and the robot was fully created, now I needed to head into Layout and give it some much nicer textures. I started by giving
the greens of the camouflage a much more metallic sheen as well as darkening the colour. Also gave the eyeball a much more robotic set of colours with some
silver elements and a glowing red ring towards the centre of the eye.
The red smiley face on the rocket pack I felt needed a scratched paint look to give it some contrast to the sleek metallic paint coat. It only shows up in rendering
however.
I thought the gold for the metallic parts of the jet pack really added to the small colour palette that the robot originally had and makes the back look a lot nicer
anyway.
Mostly, the rest of the colours stayed the same.

Now my robot was completed and all that was left was to present it. Going into the layout viewer, I took screen shots from various angles of my robot fully
rendered and textured ready to be presented.

Unit66 production log

  • 1. Salford City College Eccles Sixth Form Centre BTec Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production Games Design Unit 66 – 3D Modelling HA5 – Sidekick Task 6 – Production Name Elliot Black Date:10/3/14 I started the planning my robot by getting some inspiration from actual robots that are used in both video games and other media. I decided that I really liked the mister handy design and took the most inspiration from it overall when coming up with my design idea.
  • 2. I also came up with an ideas generation map that would help me further to think of the design by giving it some actual context in-game I.e what would be its purpose, is it a military robot, does it do work for you etc... by deciding on these factors I can focus on making a robot that based around something specific.
  • 3. Date:17/3/14 I started work on the actual design pack for my robot. Using the template provided, I drew a sketch of my robot from 3 different perspectives showing off each most sides of the robot, giving me a good starting place to work from when actually modeling it in 3D.
  • 4. I started work on the model soon after, starting by taking a primitive circle and slicing it in half to act as the main body.
  • 5. I then cut an indent out of the front to act as an eye-hole and then placed a ball primitive inside to act as an early eyeball.
  • 6. Next, I added a cylindrical base that would be the body of the robot and would also connect the head, to the legs.
  • 7. Then, I added some legs using the multishift tool to stretch out cubes and shape them into a more leg style shaped set of rectangles.
  • 8. I wanted to give him a secondary means of transportation, therefore I felt a jet pack was appropriate. I started by multi shifting out a few polygons to make a simple backpack looking cube on the back side of the head. Then, I added to cylinders and bevelled them inwards to make the actual thruster parts of the jet pack.
  • 9. Doing a similar thing as the jet pack, I then took a few polygons on the side of the head and multi shifted them out a few times to make a basic arm shape. Since It would be a military style robot I wanted it to have some lethal weaponry but I wanted something quite surreal. Therefore I decided that on the end of the arm, there should be a drill.
  • 10. Since a drill would be inadequate weaponry for a military robot, I wanted to give it some rockets. Therefore I began by making some struts on the left side of the head by stretching out some polygons again. Then I created a long, rectangular box that would house the rockets by stretching out a cube primitive and placed it onto the struts. Finally all that was left was to add the actual rockets and all that had to be made was the nose cone of the rockets as they would be all that is visible. All it took was making multiple cone primitives and spacing them out evenly into the side of the box.
  • 11. All that was left to do now was to add a few extra details and give the robot basic textures ready to be properly textured in Layout. Due to its purpose, I dedcided a camoflage theme would be appropriate for the textures. On the jet pack I added a few fuel packs that are just long cylinder primitives textured red as traditional explosive things usually are. Also there are metal slats that act as the vent of the jet pack to avoid it over heating.
  • 12. On the wrist of the drill, I put a small circle so that it wouldn’t be just arm and then drill, I felt it need a primer with something that the drill could actually be attached to.
  • 13. For the eye area, I added some metal plates that would in theory close around the eye when not in use or in extreme cases in order to defend and protect the eyeball.
  • 14. I felt although it had some weaponry and for what it was made for, it would do the job; I thought it also was very limited in what it could potentially do, therfore I added some tentacle like arms sticking out from the back which could grab weapons or pickup valuable items etc... giving it much more flexibility in what the robot could do. It also looked a LOT cooler.
  • 15. Date:24/3/14 Now everything had a base texture and the robot was fully created, now I needed to head into Layout and give it some much nicer textures. I started by giving the greens of the camouflage a much more metallic sheen as well as darkening the colour. Also gave the eyeball a much more robotic set of colours with some silver elements and a glowing red ring towards the centre of the eye.
  • 16. The red smiley face on the rocket pack I felt needed a scratched paint look to give it some contrast to the sleek metallic paint coat. It only shows up in rendering however.
  • 17. I thought the gold for the metallic parts of the jet pack really added to the small colour palette that the robot originally had and makes the back look a lot nicer anyway.
  • 18. Mostly, the rest of the colours stayed the same.
  • 19. Date:31/3/14 Now my robot was completed and all that was left was to present it. Going into the layout viewer, I took screen shots from various angles of my robot fully rendered and textured ready to be presented.
