Germany invades Poland on September 1, 1939 after Hitler signs a non-aggression pact with Stalin to split Poland between them, leading England and France to declare war on Germany and marking the beginning of World War II. Germany uses its new blitzkrieg tactic of fast, overwhelming attacks with tanks and planes to dissolve Poland within a month. After a two month "Phony War" period with little fighting, Hitler invades Denmark and Norway to build bases for an eventual invasion of the UK, and surprises French and British troops, causing them to flee to England, before engaging the Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain, where the Luftwaffe suffers its first defeat.
