2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

of the media industry.
9. Routes into these positions:
Identify 3 university courses that are relevant for your chosen media sector
BA (Hons) Film and Television Studies
BA (Hons) Entertainment Journalism
BA (Hons) Film Production
Explain how you might get an apprenticeship in your chosen media sector?
There are many ways to get an apprenticeship in your chosen media sector. For example, on gov.uk’s website there is a
apprenticeship section which shows a range of apprenticeships available in your chosen media sector. As well as that, big
companies like ITV have apprenticeship schemes available on their website, The BBC also often post apprenticeships on their
website.
Explain what types of work you could hope to do without further education
You can do work experience at big TV companies like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, etc. without any further education.
In fact, many apprenticeship programmes by those companies are targeted to students post-college/sixth form and without a
degree. Both ITV and Channel 4 run a work experience programme for those without further education aged 14 to 17 years
old. BBC also runs a work experience programme but for those aged 16 to 17 years old.

After I finish at Bexhill College, I would like to work behind the scenes of live TV shows specifically in camera operating.
There are various media sectors which include video games, TV, Film, Animation, Radio, Online and Advertising and marketing.
There are various departments within each sector. An example of a department within the video games sector is the programming department.
Production management is an example of a department in both Film and TV. A department within animation sector is the development
department. An example of a department in the Radio sector would include the distribution department. An example of the online sector
would include the development department. Lastly, distribution and sales would be a key department in the advertising and marketing sector.
Examples of roles in the programming department of the video games sector include the gameplay programmer and the physics programme.
Both of which ensure the game is true to reality. Floor runner and assistant director would be examples of roles within the production
management department of both the Film and TV sector. Examples of roles within the development department of the animation sector
include the concept artist and the writer. Marketing and sales executive would be examples of key roles in the distribution and sales
department of the Radio sector and the Advertising and Marketing sector. Development researcher and development producer are roles in
the development department of the online sector.
People can be employed under different types of contract. They are full-time, part-time, freelance, fixed term, shift work and zero-hour
contracts. Full-time contract is the most common employment contract which is offered for permanent positions and sets the salary and hourly
wage. A part-time contract has less hours a week than full-time. They work in shifts often being rotational. Part-time workers work often
around less than 30 hours a week. A fixed-term contract is a type of contract that lasts for a specific period (i.e. 6 months, for example), this
type of contract is used in project style jobs. Freelancing is for people who are self-employed and not stuck to an employer long term. Freelance
workers can be represented by a company or a temporary agency. A shift work contract is work that takes place on a schedule outside the
traditional 9 ‘til 5. It can involve evening or night shifts, early morning shifts, and rotating shifts. Zero-hours contracts, or casual contracts, allow

11. There are different routes into these media positions which include university and getting a degree, getting an apprenticeship and
being paid whilst gaining valuable experience for your CV or doing unpaid work experience which also gives you valuable experiences
in the media industry, beneficial for your CV.
1. You could go to university after college for further education and gain a degree to become an expert in your desired media sector. I am
interested in going into the TV sector, therefore, I might be interested in taking a BA (Hons) Film and Television Studies course to gain
valuable knowledge into a broader spectrum of the media industry or a BA (Hons) Entertainment Journalism to become more skilled for
the specific department and role I am interested in.
2. You could also get an apprenticeship at big companies such as ITV, BBC, and Channel 4. These can earn sometimes earn you a degree or
Level 3 qualification but in a more practical and beneficial way.
3. You can also do work experience at big TV companies like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, etc. without any further education. In fact,
many apprenticeship programmes by those companies are targeted to student’s post-college/sixth form and without a degree. Both ITV
and Channel 4 run a work experience programme for those without further education aged 14 to 17 years old. BBC also runs a work
experience programme but for those aged 16 to 17 years old.
I am hoping to develop a career in the TV sector. Examples of jobs in this sector include camera assistant/operator, sound assistant, or
autocue operator.
• Camera Operators are senior positions which require a lot of experience and expertise. Camera operators must be skilled in photography
and have a good eye for composition, colouring, framing, focusing, and lighting. They must know the technicalities of modern camera
equipment. They must have great communication as that key when being told what to do by a producer or director and work well in the
team of production crew. Lastly, they must be able to well work under-pressure and have good concentration.

12. • Sound assistants assist sound recordists to ensure the sound recording process runs safely and efficiently. They must be skilled in
understanding how sound equipment works and what is needed to maintain it. They need to be attentive to details when packing,
unpacking, maintaining the equipment and being able to handle and store the material. They need to be skilful and aware when
identifying crew needs even before being asked and be able to fix technical problems. They also must be eager to learn, listen and
observe what is happening and be vocal about questions they have about any issues. Importantly, they must be health and safety
aware when managing cables, operating, when recording in public and in studios. Lastly, they must have great communication as that
key when being told what to do by a producer or director and work well in the team of production crew.
• What the presenters and newsreaders read and how they perform is down to the autocue operator. Autocue operators must be
skilled in correcting, reading, speaking, and writing in English. It is vital they have a full understanding of the prompting hardware and
software They must be able to work well and calmly under-pressure and type quickly and clearly when mishaps occur and operate
the autocue for the presenter’s own needs. They need to be aware and conscious of what is happing during a production, respond
and make the changes quickly.
The route I intend to follow to get the position I want is to finish college with a Level 3 qualification in Creative Digital Media
Production. Then I intend on taking a gap year to gain valuable experience and lessons in the media industry through applying
for apprenticeships or through work experience programmes. I intend on then applying and going to university with a good
CV and lots of experience to take a BA (Hons) in Film & TV or Entertainment Journalism. Towards the end/after graduating
from university I intend on applying for jobs within the unscripted/live TV sector at an entry/trainee level.
