10. Carbon Dioxide from Combustion
C + O2 = CO2
12g + 32g = 44g
1g + 2.67g = 3.67g
11. Carbon Dioxide from Combustion
C + O2 = CO2
12g + 32g = 44g
1g + 2.67g = 3.67g
1L petrol contains 640g carbon and thus produces 2.35 kg CO2

1L diesel contains 724g carbon and thus produces 2.65 kg CO2
13. Carbon Footprint
• It is the total amount of greenhouse
gases (including carbon dioxide
and methane) that are generated
by our actions.
• Carbon footprint in 2022 - 36.8 Gt
• Global average - 4 tons
• Target 2050 – 2 tons

39. Electrical Energy
(i) Can be generated centrally in bulk.
(ii) Can be easily and economically transported from one place to another over
long distances.
(iii) Losses in transport are minimum.
(iv) Can be easily sub-divided.
(v) Can be adapted easily and efficiently to domestic and mechanical work.
Highest efficiencies for modern large size thermo-cycle plants range up to 40%,

• What was KWh consumption in your house for the previous month as per the
electricity bill? List the equipment used along with their wattage and usage
duration. Check if it matches the bill.
• If the cost per electricity unit is Rs. 5, find the savings when the idle running of
70 lights and 80 fans for 2 hours a day in a college is stopped. Assume suitable
wattage of fans and lights.
• Calculate your carbon footprint using any online calculator. Share a plan to
reduce the same.
• Running of A/c at 1C higher temperature reduces the cost ??

59. • Limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by around 37 gigatonnes
(Gt) from 2022 levels and achieving net-zero emissions in the energy sector by 2050.
• Current pledges and plans fall well short of IRENA’s 1.5°C pathway and will result in an emissions gap of 16
Gt in 2050.
• Annual deployment of some 1 000 GW of renewable power is needed to stay on a 1.5°C pathway.
• Every year, the gap between what is achieved and what is required continues to grow.
Lignite contains 25%–35% carbon and has the lowest energy content of all coal ranks. Lignite coal deposits tend to be relatively young and were not subjected to extreme heat or pressure. Lignite is crumbly and has high moisture content, which contributes to its low heating value.
