Christopher Columbus Research Papers
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator. He was born in 1451 in Genoa,
Italy. His first voyage was to the Atlantic Ocean in 1476, where he almost died. He participated
in several other expeditions to Africa. In 1492, he left Spain on the Santa Maria with The Pinta
and The Nina beside him. He was the son of a weaver and went to sea as a teenager. When
sailing the Atlantic Ocean, his ship burned and he had to swim to Portugal, where he eventually
married Felipa Perestrelo. They had one son in 1480 and his name was Diego. His wife died soon
after Diego was born and Columbus moved to Spain. He had a second son, Fernando, who was born
out of wedlock in 1488 with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana. Muslim domination of the trade routes
through the Middle East makes travel to India and China more difficult. Columbus estimated the
Erath to be a sphere. While experts disagreed with Columbus on matters of distance, they thought
that a voyage westward from England would turn into a water route.
FIRST VOYAGE TO THE NEW WORLD:
He went to the Spanish monarchy of Isabelle of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1486. He was
rejected from them just like he was from the Portuguese King. They must have intrigued the
monarchs because they kept Columbus as a retainer. Their main focus was on ... Show more content

He was also born in Genoa, Italy and was an Italian navigator and explorer just like Christopher
Columbus. He was born in 1450 and died in 1499. He was the son of a spice merchant. He moved
to Venice at the age of 11. He learned to sail and navigate from Italian seamen and merchants in
Venice. John married a woman named Mattea. They had three sons together. They were named
Ludovico, Sancto, and Sebastian. His voyages in 1497 and 1498 helped lay the groundwork for
Canada. Cabot moved to Venice in 1461 (possibly earlier). He became a citizen of Venice in 1476.

Medical Ethical Controversy On Abortion
Medical Ethical Controversy
A recent medical ethical controversy that resurfaces every few years is the debate of abortion. The
Roe v. Wade US Supreme Court decision in 1973 made a significant change to abortion laws, giving
women the choice to terminate pregnancy without requiring eminent health risks to the mother.
(n.d., 2015) The ethical debate of abortion continues even with the practice being legal.
The 2016 GOP elections are placing the debate of abortion back in the limelight. (Milligan, 2015)
Some groups of individuals have strong beliefs about abortion being ethically wrong and should
not be allowed as an option. As with any ethical dilemma there are strong believers on each side of
the situation. Pro life versus Pro choice is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The new regulations are aimed at the donation of the tissues from aborted fetuses. The release of
Planned Parenthood videos discussing this practice has brought much exposure to this practice. The
sale of tissue from an aborted fetus is illegal, unless the patient consents to donating the tissue. (Ura
/Walters, 2015)
Medical professionals that choose to work within the abortion industry are met with much
controversy and at times danger to their well being. The 1991 murder of Dr. David Gunn started
several years of murders, assaults and bombings against abortion clinics and employees. The irony
of these individuals committing murder to protest a woman s right to obtain an abortion, is
blatantly obvious. The fact that medical professionals have to fear for their safety because they are
providing a legal service to patients is ridiculous.
Whether a person would choose to obtain an abortion for themselves, does not provide them for
the right to make a decision about what another individual would choose to do. Personally I am a
Pro choice supporter and support any woman who deems that an abortion is the right decision
based on her individual circumstances. The ethical dilemma of abortion will not be disappearing
anytime soon, because of the strong emotions of

Essay on Shelby Foote s Shiloh
Shelby Foote s Shiloh
In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching
account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By
mirroring the troops movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier s
mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues
behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and
Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the
muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author s vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a
pivotal battle in American history.
This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the
characters accessable, the author just doesn t have the space to spread out and let the reader
develop a real emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide
any perspective on the battle and what it means even for the individual characters he has presented.
I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with
Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn t really stand on its own. The reader must come
equiped with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps
not bad, but I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment something more like Tom
Wicker s Unto This Hour. That s just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I
can t help it if I just want more.
Fans of Shelby Foote s massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the
work s biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote s earlier novel about the battle of
Shiloh. I couldn t help thinking, however, that Foote s real calling is as historian and commentator,
and his effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark.
Perhaps unfairly, novels of the Civil War tend to get compared to Michael Shaara s brilliant Killer
Angels, a comparison that does not bode

The Indian Act and residential school
The Indian Act of 1876 and many of its amending statutes contained sections that were
discriminatory towards Canadian Native Indians, and that legalized suppression of Indian customs
and traditions. In this paper, I will examine how one section of the Act, the one relating to
residential schools, contributed to the genocide of Indian culture. Ever since the first Europeans
set foot on Canadian soil in the 15th century, they have thought their culture and way of life was
superior to that of the Native North Americans. Initially the Europeans relied upon the Indians to
show them how to travel and survive in the wilds of Canada. They also were dependent on Indians
as trading partners and as military allies. However, as more settlers arrived... Show more content on

At the same time, those teachers tried to instill the white man s ways into them. The whole
concept of teaching in the residential schools was countering the traditional native lifestyle.
Native children had always learned through interacting with, emulating, and observing their
parents and elders. There was no structured educational system as there was in the schools.
Parents thought that you ...don t [want to] explain too much or you ll take away the opportunity
to learn. (Goulet, 1998) Discipline was another philosophy foreign to the Aboriginal peoples of
Canada. Native parents would let their children discover how to go about doing things by
making mistakes on their own. If a child tried something and it did not work out, the child
would suffer the natural consequences of their error and try to find a better way next time. The
entire concept of striking a child was completely unheard of and was thought to be extremely
inappropriate and unnecessary. At both Mopass and the Ontario school, these were common
practices, as was starving children and taking away their privileges. King (1967), for example
describes a situation: They starved us up there! We got one egg a year at Easter. The rest of the
time we got dogfood mush [corn meal] and skim milk. Them in the staff dining room, though, they
got bacon and eggs everyday. We never saw fruit from one Christmas to the next, but they sure had
it. Why some of those kids just starved to death. One year there was

Similarities Between The Wars Of European Religion
The Wars of Religion were a series of conflicts in Europe due to the spread of Protestantism.
These conflicts were due in particular, to the intense resentment of Protestantism as a religion and
a fear of providing freedom of religion. These conflicts were very violent and were cause for a lot
of change religiously in Europe. Although the Wars were very different throughout the various
countries in Europe, there were also many similarities and I will explore these in this essay. The
primary similarity between the Wars of Religionin Europe was the presence of a final compromise
to end the conflict. However the main theme was that one group was always excluded from the
compromise. For example, Lynn Hunt stated, ... he[Henry IV] made peace

There is very little difference between a laptop and a notebook computer. Notebooks, tend to be
smallest, lighter and as a result, a bit more expensive so the terms are often used interchangeably.
Either way, portable computers typically are more expensive than desktop PCs with equivalent
features. Hand held or palmtop computers are gaining popularity. Although they become more
sophisticated with each new model, palmtops generally have limited features and capabilities
compared to their full sized counterparts. They are very handy, however for quick tasks when you
are on the road and many include the capability to synchronize and communicate with your primary

Technology That Supports The Hardware Side Of The Adjacent...
The intent of this chapter is to discuss the evolution with regards to technology that supports the
hardware side of the adjacent market. There is a huge positive correlation, which drives revenue
maximization for Microsoft Operating system and ecosystem partners. Before 2007 electronic
devices served customers to interact with the world, was primarily laptops, desktops for emails,
web browsing, chat and e commerce. Starting around early 2008, there was gradual shift towards
tablets and smartphones. Critical question to probe and understand is what elements of the
environment drove this structural shift. From a technology perspective tablets and
smartphones use low powered CPU s and RAM compare to their laptops and desktops brethren.
They use both Wi Fi and Cellular antenna to connect to World Wide Web. Cellular service

Harding was born on November 2, 1865, in Corsica (now Bloomington Grove), Ohio. He was
eldest of eight children. His father, George Tryon Harding, was a farmer and a doctor. His mother,
Phoebe Dickerson Harding, was a gentle, pious woman who devoted herself to her children.
As a boy Warren helped his fater on the farm. In the summer he worked in a sawmill that made
brooms, and he drove a team of horses for the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroaad. His father was

young owner/editor talked the local industries into advertising their goods in it. Around this time
Harding started courting Mrs. Floronce King De Wolfe, a widow, against her fathers wishes. They
later married in 1891.
As the Star became more successful, Harding became more popular. He was a director of the
county bank, a trustie of the local Baptist church, and an active member in many social
orginazations. In 1898, Harding won an election as a Republican to the Ohio State Senate. In
1902 he was elected lieutenant governor of Ohio and served for two years. Harding left politics
temporarily, to concentrate on the Star. In 1910 he returned to polotics to run for governor of Ohio
and lost. In 1914 he was elected into Senate.
He looks like a president! stated Harry Daugherty, an Ohio admirer, a few months before the 1920
Republican convention in Chicago. He made this remark while nominating Harding For the
Republican presidental candidate. Not many took Harding seriously due to his modest back ground.
But because he couldn t be controlled Harding became the choice for presidential nomination.

Harappa And Mexican Civilization Essay
Last night I dreamed that I went back in time, as I walked around I saw people farming wheat
and barley as well as growing dates and melons. In the city there were artist making art using
copper, bronze, ivory and wood. I learned that they were the first to make cotton cloth. Traders
were trading goods with the traders from Egyptand Mesopotamia. I asked a woman in a red dress
if she could tell me a little about her land. She told me that this society was called the Harappa

government was very strong and organized. The cities were well planned right down to the water

sacred. They treated their animals special. I saw some graves that were filled with offerings like
food and weapons. She told me that they thought the dead might need these in an afterlife. I
thanked her and she was on her way.

Recollection Of Meno, Anytus And The Slave Boy
Meno:
My two most memorable scenes from this dialogue are Socrates demonstration of recollection
with the slave boy and the contrast between Meno, Anytus and the Slave boy. Socrates
demonstrates what he refers to as recollection by asking Meno s slave leading questions until he
is able to demonstrate to the boy that the length of the side of a square whose area has been
doubled in size is not double of the previous length as the boy previously thought. This method,
called the Socratic method, has been employed by different teachers of mine in the past while
instructing me. It was interesting for me to find out about its origin. While reading the dialogue, it
became clear that Meno did not have a teachable spirit (or he was unwilling to learn). The contrast
if his, Anytus and the slave boy s attitudes showed a clear difference between someone who is
willing to be instructed and someone who is not. Anytus seemed to be the most unwilling of the
two because he refused to investigate before jumping to conclusions (as he did during the
discussion about the Sophists).
Phaedrus:
My two most memorable scenes from this dialogue are Socrates idea of the soul and his story of
Theuth and Thamus. Socrates described the soul as the innate power of a winged team of horses
and a charioteer . In a man s soul, one of the horses is of good stock and the other is not. The

Growth Mindset Research Paper

Fixed mindset, growth mindset, praise effort and praise for intelligence with impact and my
experience about them with specific examples
Mindsets are beliefs which people hold on their most basic abilities and qualities. In the growth
mindset, individuals believe that they can develop their talents, brain, and skills. This creates an
environment for learning, resilience and a drive for growth. On the other hand, people believe in a
fixed mindset that primary qualities like abilities and intelligence are fixed and cannot be
developed. It also believes that talents create success alone, and it does not take effort as the
strategy needed to maximize one s potential rather than a sign of weakness. For example,
transforming motivation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teaching individuals to develop growth mindset will encourage the process and not on talent or
intelligence. Teachers and parents can make children develop growth mindset by praising their
strategies and persistence, by giving them stories that emphasize on effort and the Importance of
learning, and teaching the students that a brain is a learning tool or machine (Gupta, et al., 2012).
The society is currently worshipping talent and individuals assume that having the ability or
superior intelligence with confidence is one way of succeeding. Overemphasis on talent or
intelligence leaves students prone to failure, afraid of challenges and they are not ready to accept
their shortcomings (Taylor, et al., 2014). Praising innate abilities of children, reinforce fixed
mindset, which can prevent people in workforces or young athletics and even the married people
to live up to their potential. By teaching students to have the growth mindset encourages them to
use their personal effort and come up with effective strategies and not talent or intelligence which
will help them to achieve highly in life and even in school. As theories suggest, students who have
growth mindset believes that learning is the crucial goal than performing well in school with good
grades. Hard work is highly regarded, believing that if you labor on something, it will lead to
perfection. Even the geniuses have to put

bullying can leave drastic impacts on a vulnerable child, which would not know how to handle the

Argentina is a stunning country and it is one that should sit high on anyone s bucket list. There s a

where to start or end up. It s difficult to narrow the tourist attractions down to just 5 because there

Please note: they re all so awesome we haven t put them in any particular order.
1. Perito Moreno Glacier
Another UNESCO site, and this one you will find in El Calafte, a small town which is home to
Los Glaciares National Park. What s of interest here? The Perito Moreno Glacier, not only is it the
third largest fresh water reserve on the planet, it is also home to an 18 mile long ice formation.
The visitor center is just two hours from the town and from the center there s only a short walk
to reach to glacier via a walking circuit. For the more adventurous spirits out there... you can
climb Perito Moreno! Yes, there are tours available from a quick hour walk on the surface of the
ice to a five hour trek. That s not all you will find at the park, though. There s also a 2 mile high
mountain, Monte Fitz Roy, which is just as treacherous as Everest.
2. Ushuaia
Patagonia is well known for incredible landscapes, bragging massive stretches of plateaus and
plains, made all the more dramatic by the backdrop of the Andes. This southern hot spot also
happens to feature Ushuaia which just happens to be the most southern city in the world. It got
its start in the 20th century as a penal colony, but now it s become the place to launch adventures.
It s the starting point for trips around Cape Horn and kicking off an Antartic adventure. It s
fondly known as the end of the world and has a truly unique landscape that features woods,
mountains, glaciers, and sea. It sits at the very edge of Tierra del Fuego National Park. In fact, you

Linguistics and Child
.Introduction
Language is a human tendency to communicate with others and this could underlie the emergence
of language. Montessori said, To talk is in the nature of man. Humans needed language in order to
communicate, and soon, the powers that come with language were revealed. The evolution of the
human language began when communication was done through pictograms or pictures and

Montessori Prepared Environment | | | |
|
The prepared environment is Maria Montessori s concept that the environment can be designed
to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child. In the prepared
environment, there is a variety of activity as well as a great deal of movement. In a preschool
classroom, for example, a three year old may be washing clothes by hand while a four year old
nearby is composing words and phrases with letters known as the movable alphabet, and a five
year old is performing multiplication using a specially designed set of beads. In an elementary
classroom, a small group of six to nine year old children may be using a timeline to learn about
extinct animals while another child chooses to work alone, analyzing a poem using special
grammar symbols. Sometimes an entire class may be involved in a group activity, such as
storytelling, singing, or movement. In the calm, ordered space of the Montessori prepared
environment, children work on activities of their own choice at their own pace. They experience a
blend of freedom and self discipline in a place especially designed to meet their developmental
needs

My First Semester At Mesa College
This is my first semester at Mesa College. I am currently a Political Science major. The term that
would best describe my current situation would be non traditional student. I graduated from high
school in 2006. Since then I have gotten married, travelled the world, and had two children. While
in high schoolI excelled and took part in many academic extra curricular activities. In the past ten
years I have accumulated work and life experience. Most recently I was able to work as a legal
assistant for an immigration firm. Being bilingual was beneficial, as was my interest in law in
general. I plan on attending law school in the future which made the job appealing. Although I

Despite its location the University of California San Diego has an undeniable reputation, attrition
rate, and success rate of graduates; as well as a more appealing curriculum.
As stated above the University of California San Diego is not in the most desirable location,
however I believe it is the right choice after Mesa. UCSD is located in La Jolla at 9500 Gillman
Drive (Make Waves,2016). The nearest four year university for me would be San Diego State
University. I currently live in Chula Vista making UCSD a 28 minute drive time, not factoring in
traffic (Travelmath,2016). In comparison SDSU would be a 17 minute drive. Brenda Antonio, a
manager in the accounting department at UCSD, lives in my neighborhood and has stated that her
average drive time on a weekday morning is an hour (Antonio,2016). An hour commute may sound
like an inconvenience but there some positive aspects to a long commute. In a study done by the
Australian National University it was found that many people enjoy their commute and, said this
was the only time they got to themselves during the week, and so used it to dream, relax and
meditate (Bissel, 2015). In addition, I personally enjoy driving and don t mind the commute.
Although an hour long commute is not ideal there are certain options in order to reduce the
negative aspects. Scheduling classes during low traffic times and maximizing the time spent
commuting, like listening to books on tape, would

Summary Of The Skinny On Salt By Jeremy Likeness
Christopher. Hello, Perhaps the reason why salt is not discussed earlier in the chapter is that
humans require the nutrient of salt intake. Per author Jeremy Likeness in the article, the The skinny
on salt at bodybuiliding.com informs that body needs the nutrient of sodium and chloride that
cannot produce in the body. Furthermore, Likeness believes that it is not the sodiumamount that is
important rather the sodium in the diet is the ratio of sodium to potassium(Likeness). As sodium
potassium effects, fluid balance in the body. As a result, if there is too little sodium it will cause
the body to retain water. Unbeknownst to me, I did not realize how important it is to get the right
amount of sodium into my diet. Perhaps Bushman wanted all readers to gain a basic understanding

Unemployment benefits are a protection for people that is down on their luck and need some extra

unemployment benefits is that it will make being unemployed either more appealing or less ugly,
and along these lines lead to higher unemployment. Unemployment benefits are an incredible

a) Acromegaly (1mark)
Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder that is caused by the manifestation of growth hormone (GH) by
the pituitary gland occurring in adulthood usually from a benign tumour inside the gland. It is
characterised by the gradual enlargement of the hands, feet, tongue and prominent features of the
face with an enlarged lower jaw, bulging forehead and thickened ears and nose. It is a chronic
disfiguring illness that often decreases life expectancy as it may lead to disease in the respiratory
and cerebrovascular system (Koutoukidis, Stainton Hughson 2013, p. 809).
b) Glucagonoma (1mark)
Glucagonoma is a rare malignant tumour of the alpha cells of the pancreatic islets. It leads to an
excess production of the glucagon hormone in the blood. It is characterised by a distinctive rash,
diabetes, weight loss, stomatitis and hypoaminoacidemia (Goldman Schafer 2015, p. 101).
c) Gluconeogenesis (1mark)
Gluconeogenesis is the process in which the liver predominantly forms glucose from non
carbohydrate sources such as lactate, pyruvate, glycerol and amino acids, but can also occur to a
smaller extent in the kidneys. It occurs when the carbohydrate source is not sufficient enough to
meet the body s energy requirements. This process is significant in maintaining blood glucose

Trickery In The Odyssey
Odysseus, the King of Ithaca is trying to come home, after helping the Greeks win the Trojan
War, by making the plan of the Trojan horse. Odysseus and his men struggle through their 10 year
journey home and only with Odysseus trickery, bravery, and god honoring ways, he is able to

but has many heroic moments. Odysseus overcomes these human flaws, making him become an
Epic Hero. Odysseus embodies the Greek value of trickery, when in the battle of Troy and on his
journey back home. Odysseus is in the Trojan War, comes up with the idea to penetrate the wall of
Troy, Odysseus does this by building the hollow Trojan Horse, (with Geeks inside) as a
surrender gift to the Trojan (Homer, Iliad). This plan Odysseus organized was trickery because
the Trojans brought the Greek s Trojan horse into Troy, with Greeks hiding inside the horse, the
Greeks were able to get out of the horse at night and opened the gates, in to Troy. With Odysseus
trickery the Greeks are able to defeat the Trojans and win the Trojan War and bring back Hellen.

Bisphenol A (or BPA) is an organic compound used in the industrial production of plastics. It was
first synthesised around 100 years ago, and has been used to produce polycarbonate plastics and
epoxy resins since the 1960s (US FDA, 2012). Polycarbonate plastics are lightweight and rigid,
therefore used in products such as CDs, DVDs, sports and medical equipment, food and drink
containers and some water supply pipes. Epoxy resins are used as protective coatings in food
cans, paints and adhesives (Aschberger, 2010). According to the US Environmental Protection

The Observation Of A Four Year Old Malen.b
From birth to the toddler stage a child changes significantly from facial features, to walking and
sleeping much less during the day. At the age of four his vocabulary increases significantly, the
child can even put together sentences. They are like little people twith some sense of
independence. This paper will focus on the observation of a four year old male N.B conducted on
March 6, 2015 from 5:00 pm 5:30 pm and March 7, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 4:30. The paper will
provide examples of Piaget s theory, Vygotsky s theory as well as apply these examples to the
cognitive and development of the child.
Piaget s pre operational stage focuses on the use of symbols, language use, memory and
imagination to evaluate the child. During this stage it is noted that thinking is done in a
nonlogcial and nonreversible manner. For instance, N.B. used Lego s and hot wheel tracks to
build a make believe wall. He even placed some pillows on the carpet to mimic spiderman falling.
The child then took the spider man and began to run around the living room make noises and
using his hand as if he was throwing a web on the wall and swing from one side to the other.
When asked what he was doing, N.B. stated he was spider man and had to save the town. He
then pointed to where he had built a wall surrounding various objects. N.B then ran and jumped
over the wall and had a make believe fight with one of the action figures and stated he was saving
the day. This demonstrates make believe play which is a

Themes In Fahrenheit 451
Books are irreplaceable parts of society that help to form the opinions and beliefs of the people
that are within it. Without books we would lack the knowledge of those in the past, and the
ability to see the world from a different perspective. Each book contains information different
from the last, but each book is written with a purpose. Each book is written for a reason, and
what we are able to obtain from the books that we have been given reflect the person that we are.
Without books we would be lost as people, as members within the community, and as a society as
a whole we would be searching for something that we can not find. We would be hopeless and
censored from the knowledge that is given to us through books. It is hard to imagine what we
would know without books, if anything at all. The past would become the present and the future
would have no meaning. Fahrenheit 451displays a deep and thought provoking message to those
that read it by showing us what it would be like to live in a society where we are forced to
believe one thing, and are never able to form our own opinions. Proving that happiness doesn t
come from peace among the people, but rather the ability to to be able to live our life the way that
makes you happy. Fahrenheit 451 contains many valuable themes and lessons that apply to our
lives today and also remind us of some of the realities we are faced with.

Yale Case Solution
1. How is Yale s investment philosophy reflected in its strategic asset allocation? Yale s
investment philosophy is one of the critical factors that played into the success of the fund s
performance in the past years. The philosophy is based on 5 principles: focus on equity,
diversification, opportunities in inefficient markets, outside managers and alignment of manager s
incentives with Yale s interests. In the paragraphs below I will discuss how each of these
principles is reflected in the endowment s asset allocation, as shown from Exhibit 1. Yale s belief
in equities is reflected through the endowment s heavy allocation in equity from 1985 2010. The
weight allocation, however, is heavier in the earlier years (1985 1999) than in later... Show more

As asset allocation has reached the efficient frontier, the role of having superior fund manager is
becoming more critical. Manager s selection is a factor that differentiates Yale from other
endowments. 3. What are the factors underlying Yale s investment philosophy and process which
account for its successful investment performance? [In other words, in business jargon, what are
the value drivers of the so called Yale model ?] The combination of five factors in Yale s
investment philosophy plays an important role to Yale s successful investment performance.
However, among the five factors, the most critical and non replicable factors are Yale s ability to
identify and invest in inefficient markets and to hire superior managers with aligned incentives; all
of which came from expertise and years of experience in the industry. David Swansen s expertise,
in particular, plays a big role. The success of the model is attributed to Yale s ability to combine
both quantitative analysis (mean variance analysis) with market judgments to structure its portfolio.
In addition, Yale also uses statistical analysis to actively test their models with factors affecting the
market, therefore

A study conducted by Bohdanowicz shows that and average hotel produces more than one
kilogram of waste per guest per day and that approximately thirty percent of this waste can be
reused or recycled.
The first step to minimising waste management within the context of house keeping is by
implementing an extensive waste management system to sort recyclables from general waste,
Bohdanowicz (2005) claims that such an implementation can minimise unsorted waste from three
kilograms per guest per night to half a kilogram. Another prominent example of how the Luxor
Melbourne can minimise their waste output is by offering their unwanted furniture, linen and
towels to charities or those who are less fortunate who would put the materials to better use and
minimise operational costs.
The final aspect of the Luxor Melbourne will be focusing on to create a sustainable hotel
environment is its energy consumption. According to Gossling (2005 pp.426) the average energy
consumption per bed per night in hotels is in the order of 130 mega joules to facilitate energy
intense facilities such as restaurants and pools. Gossling s (2005) studies have determined that
major hotels can emit on average 20.6kg of carbon dioxide per night, which is a staggering number
in which the Luxor Melbourne hopes to diminish.

Theories Of Criminality And Delinquency
Crime has been around since the creation of man, and specifically, since the fall of humanity in
biblical times. Since then, people have been trying to explain what causes an individual to commit
a crime. Although the Bible explicitly confirms the origin of crime is the sinful nature of man,
many have argued as to the cause of criminality. During the eighteenth century, the argument for
criminality and delinquency was the fall of man, as the Book of Genesis explains, after Eve ate
from the forbidden tree, in Chapter 3. The first criminal act follows the fall of man, in Genesis 4:8
(NIV) where Now Cain said to his brother Abel, Let s go out to the field. While they were in the
field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Since then, human beings have committed
atrocities against other human beings, and continue to commit acts of violence against others to...

Moore starts with the definition of criminology and then proceeds to discuss five categories of
psychological theories related to understanding criminality and delinquency (Moore, 2011). The
methods used by Moore include a database search using keywords, and consultation with an expert
in the field. The problem with the method Moore used is the limited categories of psychological
theories in her article. Since there are so many different theories attempting to explain criminality
and delinquency, Moore excluded those theories addressing crime and delinquency from a
sociological perspective, and focused on the psychological theories because the psychological
theories tend to address crime and delinquency at the individual level, primarily identifying
individual differences that lead to criminal behavior (Moore, 2011, p. 228). The psychological
theories Moore discusses are Learning Theories, Intelligence Theories, Personality Trait Theories,
Theories of Psychopathy, and Cognitive and Social Development

The Importance Of Colors In The Chinese Culture
The author attempts to understand the connotations of colours in the Chinese culture and how it
shapes its day to day socio political and economic transactions. The author elucidates and develops
the theory of Keane about the transfer of messages in context to the established relationships among
the people belonging to specific cultures. The author employs ethnographic research tactics in order
to experience and understand the basic connections of the colours with that of the Chinese culture.
The main argument of the paper establishes that there could be more complex relationships between
the perceptions of colour among diverse cultures across the world. The study precisely focuses on
the meanings of the materials to convey the nature of the relationships.
Toulson attempts to explore the meanings of materials especially the colours that carry more than
just a message or compliment. It enables my own understanding regarding the functioning of
meaning making and its relevance to the basic cultural etiquettes of a culture. The author makes the
study very interesting by inferring the importance of red colour of envelopes (hГіngbДЃo) that

colours do are important to certain cultures. The paper attempts to draw a relationship between

This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die, (Hawthorne 49). With these harsh
words, Hester begins a new chapter of her life in New England as a condemned adulterer. The
gossips speak of marks and brands upon her bodice and forehead, and one is bold enough to suggest
that she ought to die, demonstrating exactly how hated Hester is at the beginning of the novel.
Hawthorne s statement that the gossip who suggests the worst punishment, death, is the ugliest of
them all infers that all the gossips are very ugly, while Hester remains beautiful, subtly providing a
certain insight that perhaps Hester is not the devil the town thinks she is. This demonstrates how
Hester stands apart from others in society, to such an extreme degree that she even looks different
from the other Puritans. Through the ostracization of Hester, Hawthorne shows how her lack of
motivational individuality has brought this fate upon her. He wants to prove to his reader that lack
of this element creates an unbalanced and isolated life, one of which nobody wants to live in.

There were three different types of competitors that challenged Mondavi from different angles. The
first type was those firms that focused on making high quality premium wines. The next type was
the large volume producers that were aggressively moving into the wine industry. Finally, the third
type was the global alcohol companies that were acquiring wineries to further diversify their

study is I am Sam. (2002) The protagonist of the film is Sam Dawson, who is played by the actor
Sean Penn. Sam Dawson is a developmentally or intellectually challenged adult male, who has a
young daughter, primary school aged, named Lucy. Sam and Lucy live together without her
mother, who is a homeless person. There is not extensive information provided in the film
regarding Sam s upbringing, but based on his present situation, he is a well adjusted person in a
middle class atmosphere. It seems he has enough assets to provide for himself and his daughter
in a fairly independent basis. His daughter, Lucy, is happy and taken care of, but the tension
begins when Lucy exceeds Sam s mental capacity. Her peers ridicule her and her father because
of his intellectual deficiencies, calling him a retard. The character s family consists of Lucy
primarily, and some of Sam s other disabled friends who all help each other. One of Sam s
greatest and most prominent likes is that he is a huge fan of the band The Beatles. One of his
strengths is his love for his daughter. Another strength, although it is perceived as a weakness by
others who might prey on him, is that he goes through life with a sense of awe and naivete. Of

The Effects Of Food Safety On The Food Industry
Researching Business
RESEARCH DISCUSSION PAPER
INTRODUCTION
As Jamaica s food supply becomes more dynamic and diverse, government policies aimed at
preventing contamination and illness have become more important to consumers. Compliance with
food safety regulations are becoming very important as consumers become more aware of the
dangers associated with consuming contaminated food. Improperly trained employees, substandard
products, or poor service as well as non compliance to food safety laws and regulations can cost

regulatory compliance by focusing on the management of risk in the fast food business in Kingston,

Disabilities Education Act
Up until age 21, children with disabilities are covered by the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA), which was first enacted in 1975 and most recently revised in 2004. IDEA
mandates that every state provides children with disabilities a free public education that meets their
individual and unique needs (Autism speaks toolkit, 2015). Many families with children with ASD
have spent years navigating the school system in order to maximize their child s potential under
this Act. Children with ASD can receive various services included special education, speech
language therapy, occupational therapy, or mental health counseling. When the school years are

This requires the students with ASD to learn independence in order for them to succeed. While
sparse, there are colleges and universities that are skilled at providing accommodations for students
with ASD. Unfortunately, students with ASD have decreased graduation and employment rates,
and they are more likely to develop mental health disorders during their college years when
compared with other students with disabilities (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). Challenges the
students with ASD will face in college include organizational and time management difficulties,
lacking self advocacy skills, sensory overload, and problems meeting academic demands (Hees,
Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). It is important for a primary care provider to provide anticipatory
guidance to the adolescent and their family of what to expect of postsecondary school if that is
what they choose for the next step.
A recent study investigated the challenges and support needs of students with ASD in
postsecondary education (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). The first challenge the researchers found
were that the students with ASD struggled with the new situations and unexpected changes in
college. These students found it very difficult to oversee the large amount of new information and
choices they had to make. They are leaving behind what is familiar and transitioning into something
completely new, which is not

Personally the biggest characteristic that separated western civilization from others is Christianity.
They were influenced into this by the Hebrews and took it beyond being monotheistic which
already was out of the norm. It affected their law, art, music, and most importantly their society,
Judeo Christian , which is simply the belief of two different religions together in this case it would
be Judi and Christian. The source document for Judeo Christian better known as the bible impacted
their thinking drastically. Western people truly thought they had a bond with God. This affected
their everyday attitude, they avided by the saying cope instead of hope and they all truly believed
in it. Overall, the Hebrews impacted the western people in a major way. Another contribution the
Hebrews brought that gave them a unique characteristic was the importance of individualism,
meaning that they would live as a democracy and have big beliefs in freedom and individuality

The Pros And Cons Of The American Civil War
Railroads are not nearly as popular in the United States as they are in European countries. Prior
to the American Civil War, railroads were a fairly new, and untried, invention. Compared to
carriages and the other modes of transportation at the time, the railroad was far superior. Due to
this superiority, they were used to transport soldiers, food, and supplies. A systemic railroad
began to spread all across the nation, and both sides of the war used them to their advantage.
The railroad construction started as soon as possible. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was
founded in 1828 and its first section of rails was open in 1830. At its peak, The B O Railroad
spread from the east coast all the way to the Illinois, and was over 5,550 miles long! In 1831, the
state of Maryland granted the B O Railroad and charter to begin construction of a line connecting
Maryland to Washington D.C. The south, which was mostly a society built on agriculture, was at a
huge disadvantage when it came to railroads. Two thirds of all the railroads in the nation at the
time were in the north. The southern states couldn t transport anything as easy as the north, and
their income mostly relied on the exportation of their crops. Without this source of income, the
Confederacy s economy was crippled. Arguably, railroads were the reason for the South s eventual
defeat. By 1861, 22,000 miles of track had been laid in the Northern states and 9,500 miles in the
South. In the south, there were cities that

Film Analysis Of Metropolis
The film Metropolis premiered on January 10, 1927 and is lauded as one of the Weimar era s
great films. The film was attractive immediately due to the scale of the sets and the cinematic
innovations that were achieved by director Fritz Lang. Metropolis was created during a time
when Expressionism and the Neue Sachlichkeit pervaded the film culture. The Neue
Sachlichkeit was a response to Expressionism to appeal to a broader audience. Willy Haas
discusses the sets in his review of Metropolis and describes their visual appeal. The sets for
Metropolis draws on both styles and in this they become more than a technical wonder, it lends
itself to the storytelling rather than impeding it. The set achieves this because it is a coalescing of
the two forms. Therefore, I contend that Metropolis s set lends itself to the plot by combining
Expressionist social issues and design with the Neue Sachlichkeit s want to return to realistic values.
Willy Haas, a film critic and screenwriter, published a review in the Film Kurier for Metropolis
one day after the premiere. Haas has a deep understanding of the film s set and how each part
works together to create the overall aesthetic. He begins by commending Fritz Lang s ability to
meticulously bring out the finer details while creating a set of gigantic proportions. Then, Haas
summarizes everything used to create the film from the cast to the amount of film used. Haas
presents the film as a mixture of different philosophies all woven together. Haas s main critique
of the film is that it lacks a central theme, or as Haas writes, the profound lack of inner form.
This is due to the films massive size, which seems to mask the film s scarcity of meaning. Haas
concludes this article by stating that even with it being a technical marvel, the feature that allows
for a viewer to relate to the film is lost. One response to the lack of deeper meaning is by
addressing how the set aids the story.
Haas s review focuses on the statistical size of the set but neglects the sophistication of the visual
aspect. It is here where the set makes use of combining the two styles. The film is set in a futuristic
city filled with several skyscrapers, cars, and planes. At the center, is a tower that

Essay Iconography and Iconology of an Advertisement
Iconography and Iconology of an Advertisement
Looking at the art of the past, we see many images depicting nude women. From Botticelli s The
Birth of Venus to Ingres s Grande Odelisque, many artists like the idea of painting a woman in the
nude in an interesting pose. Even modern images in contemporary magazines depict nude images.
Yves Saint Laurent s advertisementof their fragrance Opium depicts a nude woman covering her
breast. Her pose is a symbol of the iconography, while beauty serves as the iconology. The
understanding of the iconography and iconology of this image by contemporary society comes from
the fact that the nude image was depicted in the great art of the past; however, the fact that society
has become contemporary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, The Birth of Venus has arranged her hands and hair in such a way to hide her
sexuality. The pose of the woman in the advertisement also shows the same thing. She is posed
seductively to show off her body, yet she is covering one breast with her hand. When we think of
nude figures, we think of art pieces in the past that depicted nude women in a certain pose.
Therefore, the pose of the woman in the advertisement owes much to the pose of nude women in art
pieces of the past. Because nudity was depicted in great art of the past, we are not surprised when
we see a nude image in a magazine. Instead, we view nudity as a symbol of beauty.
The real purpose of a nude image is to show the woman s beauty, not her sexuality; this is the
iconology of the image. This image of the woman in a seductive pose in the advertisement is
meant to draw the reader s attention to the product. The advertisers want to show how beautiful
this new fragrance is by having a beautiful nude woman pose for their ad. The art of the past that
depicted nude women were meant to show their beauty also. For example, the statue of Aphrodite
by Praxiteles depicted the goddess in a seductive pose, but the statue was interpreted as a symbol of
enchanting beauty. Beauty is shown through sexuality and seductiveness, as evidenced by the nude
women in the art pieces. This is also shown in the advertisement for the fragrance.
Although the image in the

Teacher Reflection
essons from the Classroom Page 1
Introduction
The most rewarding aspect of teaching is the impact the teachers have on their students.
Whether it be because the classroom atmosphere was so much fun or the teacher really got the
student interested in a specific subject, the impact a teacher has on someone can last a lifetime.
While
I am far from being someone s favorite teacher, I hope I can make an impact on the lives of as many
students as possible through inspiring confidence and creating a respectful and fun classroom
environment. In just three weeks at International Teacher Training Organization (ITTO) in
Guadalajara,
Mexico I have been able to improve many of my teaching skills through classroom experience and
instructor input sessions which has resulted in me becoming a better teacher for all students.
What is a Good Teacher?
While teaching naturally entails relaying information to students, a good teacher encompasses so
much more. It is important for teachers to be able to think on their feet, readjust their lesson if
unforeseen obstacles arise, and also inspire the students to learn. Every lesson will bring a new
unanticipated issue into the classroom that is simply a fact of teaching. A good teacher can
acknowledge the issue and adjust accordingly. If the technology stops working or only half the
class shows up, then the teacher should be able to take it all in stride and alter the lesson so it
works for the circumstances. In addition teachers are the cheerleaders of their subjects, they are
there to inspire students to learn from their lessons. While not every students will have a burning
desire to know more about the topic of the class, the teacher needs to be able to keep the classroom
atmosphere positive and engaging for all students. It is also extremely important that the teacher
fosters a sense of community among the students so they feel at ease in the classroom and
connected to their teacher and their peers. Creating a welcoming atmosphere is key in a student s
learning.
According to the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship at Georgetown
University, good teachers, are prepared, set clear and fair expectations, have a positive attitude, are
patient with students, and assess

Homeschooling And Traditional Classroom Education
Compare and Contrast Homeschooling and Traditional Classroom Education
People can choose to get homeschooling or not in the 1970s, some famous writer started write
relative innovation at the same time ( Homeschooling 101 , 2012). There are now more than two
million children being homeschooled in the U.S., with the percentage rapidly increasing by 7
percent to 15 percent each year, according to the National Home Education Research Institute (
Homeschooling 101, 2012). Maybe we can find that homeschooling is becoming more popular than
traditional school, but the truth is, most children still choose to study in traditional school. We
could not ignore that it is hard and laborious for parents to teach their own child at home, although
the child could learn a great deal under the homeschooling. If they send their child to traditional
school, more time could be saved and the parent could improve themselves and be an example for
their child. For instance, participating in the activities with other kids and learning from them for
comparison. Furthermore, attending traditional school could save a ton of money for kids to use it
on other skill learning. Whatever the parent decides to do either the homeschooling or send their
children to the traditional school, there is no denying that children can learn things. From textbook
knowledge, on average, home schoolers score at or above the national average on standardized
measurement. (Distefano,

for a few clinics so that I could have a first hand experience with it and also she gave me the
opportunity to add my own different drills or tweak her drills a little. One drill that I was wanting
to really try was a small game because I think that a small game would give the children the most
amount of fun but also they would learn the most because they would have to put all the skills
they learnt earlier into play. I learnt that running a lacrosse clinic was harder to run than expected

  • 2. Christopher Columbus Research Papers Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator. He was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. His first voyage was to the Atlantic Ocean in 1476, where he almost died. He participated in several other expeditions to Africa. In 1492, he left Spain on the Santa Maria with The Pinta and The Nina beside him. He was the son of a weaver and went to sea as a teenager. When sailing the Atlantic Ocean, his ship burned and he had to swim to Portugal, where he eventually married Felipa Perestrelo. They had one son in 1480 and his name was Diego. His wife died soon after Diego was born and Columbus moved to Spain. He had a second son, Fernando, who was born out of wedlock in 1488 with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana. Muslim domination of the trade routes through the Middle East makes travel to India and China more difficult. Columbus estimated the Erath to be a sphere. While experts disagreed with Columbus on matters of distance, they thought that a voyage westward from England would turn into a water route. FIRST VOYAGE TO THE NEW WORLD: He went to the Spanish monarchy of Isabelle of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1486. He was rejected from them just like he was from the Portuguese King. They must have intrigued the monarchs because they kept Columbus as a retainer. Their main focus was on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were named Ludovico, Sancto, and Sebastian. His voyages in 1497 and 1498 helped lay the groundwork for Canada. Cabot moved to Venice in 1461 (possibly earlier). • 3. Medical Ethical Controversy On Abortion Medical Ethical Controversy A recent medical ethical controversy that resurfaces every few years is the debate of abortion. The Roe v. Wade US Supreme Court decision in 1973 made a significant change to abortion laws, giving women the choice to terminate pregnancy without requiring eminent health risks to the mother. (n.d., 2015) The ethical debate of abortion continues even with the practice being legal. The 2016 GOP elections are placing the debate of abortion back in the limelight. (Milligan, 2015) Some groups of individuals have strong beliefs about abortion being ethically wrong and should not be allowed as an option. As with any ethical dilemma there are strong believers on each side of the situation. Pro life versus Pro choice is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The new regulations are aimed at the donation of the tissues from aborted fetuses. The release of Planned Parenthood videos discussing this practice has brought much exposure to this practice. The sale of tissue from an aborted fetus is illegal, unless the patient consents to donating the tissue. (Ura /Walters, 2015) Medical professionals that choose to work within the abortion industry are met with much controversy and at times danger to their well being. The 1991 murder of Dr. David Gunn started several years of murders, assaults and bombings against abortion clinics and employees. The irony of these individuals committing murder to protest a woman s right to obtain an abortion, is blatantly obvious. The fact that medical professionals have to fear for their safety because they are providing a legal service to patients is ridiculous. Whether a person would choose to obtain an abortion for themselves, does not provide them for the right to make a decision about what another individual would choose to do. Personally I am a Pro choice supporter and support any woman who deems that an abortion is the right decision based on her individual circumstances. The ethical dilemma of abortion will not be disappearing anytime soon, because of the strong emotions of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on Shelby Foote s Shiloh Shelby Foote s Shiloh In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the troops movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier s mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author s vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the characters accessable, the author just doesn t have the space to spread out and let the reader develop a real emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective on the battle and what it means even for the individual characters he has presented. I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn t really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment something more like Tom Wicker s Unto This Hour. That s just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can t help it if I just want more. Fans of Shelby Foote s massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the work s biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote s earlier novel about the battle of Shiloh. I couldn t help thinking, however, that Foote s real calling is as historian and commentator, and his effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark. Perhaps unfairly, novels of the Civil War tend to get compared to Michael Shaara s brilliant Killer Angels, a comparison that does not bode ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jack The Ripper Theory for the official documents, including the testimony at the inquest, to be forwarded in the original, or in copies to London, on the grounds that the crime of Schulse closely resembles the East End horrors . th SEAMEN In the 2005 book Jack the Ripper The 21st Century Investigation, former murder squad Detective and author Trevor Marriott, suggests to us the possibility that Jack the Ripper may have been a merchant seaman. This theory however is not a new one. Edward Larkins, in November 1888, also made the suggestion that the Ripper could have possibly been a merchant seaman. Marriott unfortunately, unlike Larkins, does not offer us a suspect name or even the name of the ship on which the Ripper sailed. only that several ships, which were in London on the... • 6. The Indian Act and residential school The Indian Act of 1876 and many of its amending statutes contained sections that were discriminatory towards Canadian Native Indians, and that legalized suppression of Indian customs and traditions. In this paper, I will examine how one section of the Act, the one relating to residential schools, contributed to the genocide of Indian culture. Ever since the first Europeans set foot on Canadian soil in the 15th century, they have thought their culture and way of life was superior to that of the Native North Americans. Initially the Europeans relied upon the Indians to show them how to travel and survive in the wilds of Canada. They also were dependent on Indians as trading partners and as military allies. However, as more settlers arrived... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the same time, those teachers tried to instill the white man s ways into them. The whole concept of teaching in the residential schools was countering the traditional native lifestyle. Native children had always learned through interacting with, emulating, and observing their parents and elders. There was no structured educational system as there was in the schools. Parents thought that you ...don t [want to] explain too much or you ll take away the opportunity to learn. (Goulet, 1998) Discipline was another philosophy foreign to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. Native parents would let their children discover how to go about doing things by making mistakes on their own. If a child tried something and it did not work out, the child would suffer the natural consequences of their error and try to find a better way next time. The entire concept of striking a child was completely unheard of and was thought to be extremely inappropriate and unnecessary. At both Mopass and the Ontario school, these were common practices, as was starving children and taking away their privileges. King (1967), for example describes a situation: They starved us up there! We got one egg a year at Easter. The rest of the time we got dogfood mush [corn meal] and skim milk. • 7. Similarities Between The Wars Of European Religion The Wars of Religion were a series of conflicts in Europe due to the spread of Protestantism. These conflicts were due in particular, to the intense resentment of Protestantism as a religion and a fear of providing freedom of religion. These conflicts were very violent and were cause for a lot of change religiously in Europe. Although the Wars were very different throughout the various countries in Europe, there were also many similarities and I will explore these in this essay. The primary similarity between the Wars of Religionin Europe was the presence of a final compromise to end the conflict. • 14. Recollection Of Meno, Anytus And The Slave Boy Meno: My two most memorable scenes from this dialogue are Socrates demonstration of recollection with the slave boy and the contrast between Meno, Anytus and the Slave boy. Socrates demonstrates what he refers to as recollection by asking Meno s slave leading questions until he is able to demonstrate to the boy that the length of the side of a square whose area has been doubled in size is not double of the previous length as the boy previously thought. This method, called the Socratic method, has been employed by different teachers of mine in the past while instructing me. It was interesting for me to find out about its origin. While reading the dialogue, it became clear that Meno did not have a teachable spirit (or he was unwilling to learn). The contrast if his, Anytus and the slave boy s attitudes showed a clear difference between someone who is willing to be instructed and someone who is not. Anytus seemed to be the most unwilling of the two because he refused to investigate before jumping to conclusions (as he did during the discussion about the Sophists). Phaedrus: My two most memorable scenes from this dialogue are Socrates idea of the soul and his story of Theuth and Thamus. Socrates described the soul as the innate power of a winged team of horses and a charioteer . In a man s soul, one of the horses is of good stock and the other is not. Teachers and parents can make children develop growth mindset by praising their strategies and persistence, by giving them stories that emphasize on effort and the Importance of learning, and teaching the students that a brain is a learning tool or machine (Gupta, et al., 2012). The society is currently worshipping talent and individuals assume that having the ability or superior intelligence with confidence is one way of succeeding. Overemphasis on talent or intelligence leaves students prone to failure, afraid of challenges and they are not ready to accept their shortcomings (Taylor, et al., 2014). Each book is written for a reason, and what we are able to obtain from the books that we have been given reflect the person that we are. In addition, by saying that, the warm East Wind thaws and the snow, melting, swells the rivers to overflow, Homer provides us with more kinesthetic imagery, as you can feel as well as see Penelope s sorrow. One can see her eyes filling to the brim with tears, as slowly, drip by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Importance Of Colors In The Chinese Culture The author attempts to understand the connotations of colours in the Chinese culture and how it shapes its day to day socio political and economic transactions. The author elucidates and develops the theory of Keane about the transfer of messages in context to the established relationships among the people belonging to specific cultures. The author employs ethnographic research tactics in order to experience and understand the basic connections of the colours with that of the Chinese culture. The main argument of the paper establishes that there could be more complex relationships between the perceptions of colour among diverse cultures across the world. The study precisely focuses on the meanings of the materials to convey the nature of the relationships. Toulson attempts to explore the meanings of materials especially the colours that carry more than just a message or compliment. It enables my own understanding regarding the functioning of meaning making and its relevance to the basic cultural etiquettes of a culture. The author makes the study very interesting by inferring the importance of red colour of envelopes (hГіngbДЃo) that appear at Singaporean Chinese funerals. It is very thought provoking because of the fact that colours do are important to certain cultures. The paper attempts to draw a relationship between death and the colour (red) that represents it. The red colour has an intimate relationship with the sociocultural notions of China including the Christians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Individualism In Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter And The... The American Romantic era, lasting from early to mid 19th century, is characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism. Within this movement, in Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter and Herman Melville s Bartleby, The Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street, the characters set at the center of their respective narratives both challenge societal prejudices through actions different from the social norm. Hawthorne s protagonist, Hester Prynne, is met with disgust and disdain from the Puritan community after committing only one sin; contrarily, Melville s Bartleby is first met with awe and love from his boss on Wall Street, working as a copyist. Hawthorne s statement that the gossip who suggests the worst punishment, death, is the ugliest of them all infers that all the gossips are very ugly, while Hester remains beautiful, subtly providing a certain insight that perhaps Hester is not the devil the town thinks she is. This demonstrates how Hester stands apart from others in society, to such an extreme degree that she even looks different from the other Puritans. Through the ostracization of Hester, Hawthorne shows how her lack of motivational individuality has brought this fate upon her. • 46. The Pros And Cons Of The American Civil War Railroads are not nearly as popular in the United States as they are in European countries. Prior to the American Civil War, railroads were a fairly new, and untried, invention. Compared to carriages and the other modes of transportation at the time, the railroad was far superior. Due to this superiority, they were used to transport soldiers, food, and supplies. A systemic railroad began to spread all across the nation, and both sides of the war used them to their advantage. The railroad construction started as soon as possible. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was founded in 1828 and its first section of rails was open in 1830. At its peak, The B O Railroad spread from the east coast all the way to the Illinois, and was over 5,550 miles long! In 1831, the state of Maryland granted the B O Railroad and charter to begin construction of a line connecting Maryland to Washington D.C. The south, which was mostly a society built on agriculture, was at a huge disadvantage when it came to railroads. Two thirds of all the railroads in the nation at the time were in the north. The southern states couldn t transport anything as easy as the north, and their income mostly relied on the exportation of their crops. Without this source of income, the Confederacy s economy was crippled. Arguably, railroads were the reason for the South s eventual defeat. By 1861, 22,000 miles of track had been laid in the Northern states and 9,500 miles in the South. In the south, there were cities that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Film Analysis Of Metropolis The film Metropolis premiered on January 10, 1927 and is lauded as one of the Weimar era s great films. The film was attractive immediately due to the scale of the sets and the cinematic innovations that were achieved by director Fritz Lang. Metropolis was created during a time when Expressionism and the Neue Sachlichkeit pervaded the film culture. The Neue Sachlichkeit was a response to Expressionism to appeal to a broader audience. Willy Haas discusses the sets in his review of Metropolis and describes their visual appeal. The sets for Metropolis draws on both styles and in this they become more than a technical wonder, it lends itself to the storytelling rather than impeding it. The set achieves this because it is a coalescing of the two forms. Therefore, I contend that Metropolis s set lends itself to the plot by combining Expressionist social issues and design with the Neue Sachlichkeit s want to return to realistic values. Willy Haas, a film critic and screenwriter, published a review in the Film Kurier for Metropolis one day after the premiere. Haas has a deep understanding of the film s set and how each part works together to create the overall aesthetic. He begins by commending Fritz Lang s ability to meticulously bring out the finer details while creating a set of gigantic proportions. Then, Haas summarizes everything used to create the film from the cast to the amount of film used. Haas presents the film as a mixture of different philosophies all woven together. Haas s main critique of the film is that it lacks a central theme, or as Haas writes, the profound lack of inner form. This is due to the films massive size, which seems to mask the film s scarcity of meaning. Haas concludes this article by stating that even with it being a technical marvel, the feature that allows for a viewer to relate to the film is lost. One response to the lack of deeper meaning is by addressing how the set aids the story. Haas s review focuses on the statistical size of the set but neglects the sophistication of the visual aspect. It is here where the set makes use of combining the two styles. The film is set in a futuristic city filled with several skyscrapers, cars, and planes. At the center, is a tower that ... • 51. Teacher Reflection essons from the Classroom Page 1 Introduction The most rewarding aspect of teaching is the impact the teachers have on their students. Whether it be because the classroom atmosphere was so much fun or the teacher really got the student interested in a specific subject, the impact a teacher has on someone can last a lifetime. While I am far from being someone s favorite teacher, I hope I can make an impact on the lives of as many students as possible through inspiring confidence and creating a respectful and fun classroom environment. In just three weeks at International Teacher Training Organization (ITTO) in Guadalajara, Mexico I have been able to improve many of my teaching skills through classroom experience and instructor input sessions which has resulted in me becoming a better teacher for all students. What is a Good Teacher? While teaching naturally entails relaying information to students, a good teacher encompasses so much more. It is important for teachers to be able to think on their feet, readjust their lesson if unforeseen obstacles arise, and also inspire the students to learn. Every lesson will bring a new unanticipated issue into the classroom that is simply a fact of teaching. A good teacher can acknowledge the issue and adjust accordingly. If the technology stops working or only half the class shows up, then the teacher should be able to take it all in stride and alter the lesson so it works for the circumstances. In addition teachers are the cheerleaders of their subjects, they are there to inspire students to learn from their lessons. While not every students will have a burning desire to know more about the topic of the class, the teacher needs to be able to keep the classroom atmosphere positive and engaging for all students. It is also extremely important that the teacher fosters a sense of community among the students so they feel at ease in the classroom and connected to their teacher and their peers. Creating a welcoming atmosphere is key in a student s learning. According to the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship at Georgetown University, good teachers, are prepared, set clear and fair expectations, have a positive attitude, are patient with students, and assess ... There are now more than two million children being homeschooled in the U.S., with the percentage rapidly increasing by 7 percent to 15 percent each year, according to the National Home Education Research Institute ( Homeschooling 101, 2012). Maybe we can find that homeschooling is becoming more popular than traditional school, but the truth is, most children still choose to study in traditional school. We could not ignore that it is hard and laborious for parents to teach their own child at home, although the child could learn a great deal under the homeschooling. If they send their child to traditional school, more time could be saved and the parent could improve themselves and be an example for their child. For instance, participating in the activities with other kids and learning from them for comparison. Furthermore, attending traditional school could save a ton of money for kids to use it on other skill learning. Whatever the parent decides to do either the homeschooling or send their children to the traditional school, there is no denying that children can learn things.
