Pervasive Developmental Disorder
It describes a group of neurological
disorders.
1.Pervasive: Affecting multiple areas
2.Developmental: Affecting development
of the brain
It is now termed as Autism Spectrum
Disorder (ASD).
Five types of pervasive developmental disorders
Autism
Asperger’s syndrome
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
Pervasive developmental disorder-Not Otherwise Specified
Rett’s Disorder
Pervasive developmental disorders are now termed Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD).
ASD includes all the types except Rett’s Disorder.
Symptoms are diagnosed by the age of 2 years.
Impaired social skills
Deficits in non-verbal communications
Repetitive gestures
Hypersensitive to sounds, smells, light, etc.
Autism
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
Development progresses normally but
regresses after 2 years.
Impaired movement
Loss of bladder and bowel control
Impaired social and language skills.
Rett’s Disorder
Development progresses normally but regresses after 6-18 months.
Loss of motor skills like walking
Loss of speech and reasoning abilities
Repetitive hand gestures
Poorly coordinated gait
Impaired language development
Pervasive developmental disorder-Not Otherwise Specified
Severe deficits in social and communication skills.
Repetitive behaviors
Refers to developmental conditions that cannot fit into other categories.
Pervasive developmental disorders affect the patients at an early
age.
The quality of life declines for the entire lifespan of the patients.
The advancements in research are defining better criteria for
diagnosis.
Although treatment options are not effective, stem cell therapy is
emerging as a hope for effectively treating autism.
